Chapter 1188: Chapter 65: A Leisurely Assault

Tang Zheng’s words were high-sounding, but in reality, he was just shirking responsibility. He simply didn’t have the energy to take care of so many people, and it didn’t make sense to do so. People like Su Su would die sooner or later, and their presence was purely a waste of time. Besides, there weren’t many zombies, not even enough for Tao Ran and the other two to kill. These newbies acting alone definitely wouldn’t yield significant results.

"Move out!" Tang Zheng waved his hand, no longer concerned with the others, and walked towards the small town with Tao Ran and the other two.

The cool night breeze blew across the grass, bringing with it a fresh scent that uplifted one’s spirits when inhaled.

After walking fifty meters, with the help of the bright moonlight, they could already see the dozen or so pursuing zombie soldiers scattered about, dragging out in a long line. The first three, hearing footsteps, began to move towards Tang Zheng.

Song Xin became tense all at once, while Tao Ran and Zhao Dongtao, having killed a zombie in the hotel, were relatively calm.

"Don’t panic, these guys don’t run as fast as humans. You can wait until they’re within thirty meters to shoot," Tang Zheng said, noticing Zhao Dongtao holding a shotgun. He handed over his M4A1, "Use this, the shotgun’s range is too short."

"Okay," Zhao Dongtao caught it, and after walking a few more steps, he kneeled on one knee as Tang Zheng had instructed, the butt of the rifle against his shoulder, and began to aim for the zombies’ heads.

Pop, pop, the crisp gunshots sounded, instantly drawing the attention of the zombies, which began to move in their direction.

"No good, I can’t hit accurately." After firing five bullets, Zhao Dongtao hit two into the chests of the zombies, but he failed to get a headshot, so the zombies continued to move.

The newbies who were following Tang Zheng saw that Zhao Dongtao hadn’t managed to kill the zombies on the first try and had attracted them, changing their expressions. Tong Dahong muttered a few complaints in a low voice; if Zhao Dongtao had not been a good friend of Tang Zheng, he would have been scolded mercilessly.

"Three points and one line, the ACOG sight is so useful. Look at the reticle and keep your trigger finger steady. Don’t apply any lateral force," Tang Zheng crouched near Zhao Dongtao, patiently instructing him, while Tao Ran listened intently, and Song Xin gripped the shotgun tightly, ready to fire at the zombies at any moment.

Zhao Dongtao continued to fire, and because the distance was only a little over twenty meters, the number of hits increased but still, there were no headshots.

The newbies watching from behind were anxious for Zhao Dongtao.

"No talent," muttered Kong Licheng as he raised his gun and used three shots to blast the zombies’ heads apart. They fell like rotten wood, collapsing straight down.

"You don’t mind, do you? I need weapons." Kong Licheng began to attack as he too was looking to recruit a few worthwhile allies.

"After killing this wave, go in different directions. With gunshots scattered, the zombies will disperse too. Otherwise, when they gather, it’ll be tough to deal with," Tang Zheng advised them, pulling out his handgun and shooting at the remaining zombies. Without waiting for Tong Dahong to shoot, he landed headshots with every bullet, flipping them all over.

The newbies had just prepared to shoot when they saw Tang Zheng wipe them all out in the blink of an eye. They were impressed once again but also felt a little dissatisfied, thinking that he was somewhat selfish, only looking out for his own people.

"Go pick up the equipment, but before you take the weapons, give the corpses’ heads an extra shot," Tang Zheng said. He was confident in his marksmanship, and this advice was simply to cultivate a good sense of detail in the newbies because sometimes a small mistake could lead to death.

"How considerate of you," Dong Zixuan gave Tang Zheng a blank look and left with her rifle ready.

"Policewoman, come with me," Tang Zheng stopped Dong Zixuan. If there was anyone he could trust among this group, aside from Song Xin and the other two, it was the policewoman. At least she was more upright, a thoughtful idealist.

"No need," Dong Zixuan was a proud woman and didn’t need charity, "I can survive on my own."

"That’s not what I mean. There’s something I want to discuss with you," Tang Zheng thought of the Golden Seed he had previously obtained. Trojan had mentioned a limitation on using abilities, but that wasn’t very precise. Was the restriction directed at the group leader, or did it include the newbies as well? Since abilities were restricted, why were Seeds still being dropped? If it was purely for currency for the next round, the group leaders didn’t need such trivial things. Could it be that it implies that newbies can use them to activate abilities?

Tang Zheng felt it was necessary to try it, but he couldn’t bear to use Song Xin and the other two, fearing problems might arise. However, giving it to others—like Su Su—would be a waste if it successfully activated an ability. Besides loyalty, she definitely wouldn’t be able to fully utilize the Seed Ability. As for Kong Licheng, Tang Zheng didn’t trust him. After much consideration, Dong Zixuan seemed like the best choice.

The policewoman had a good character, and even if she gained an ability, she would only be grateful to Tang Zheng and wouldn’t pose a threat to his status as the group leader. Moreover, she was competent, so activating an ability could maximize its potential. Song Xin and Tao Ran were not suitable.

"What if it causes death?" As he looked at Dong Zixuan’s pure face, Tang Zheng hesitated; he couldn’t bring himself to be so ruthless.

"What is it?" Dong Zixuan was curious; she was sure it wasn’t a confession, as Tang Zheng wasn’t such a superficial man.

"I’ll tell you later; let’s kill zombies first." Indeed, the newbies had scattered, and gunshots began to ring out chaotically. The soldier zombies moved around, becoming dispersed.

"Here, take this," Zhao Dongtao picked up a desert-colored SCAR Assault Rifle and handed it to Tang Zheng.

Tang Zheng pulled back the bolt and, looking through the ACOG sight, shot at a zombie. The recoil was small, and the spread when firing in quick succession was decent. The zombie’s head was turned into a sieve.

"The gun is good, but you’ve got to give me a few Ammo Clips," said Zhao Dongtao, already moving to strip off his tactical vest.

"It’s a joke, go kill some zombies," Tang Zheng said with a laugh, stopping his friend. He went to instruct Song Xin and Tao Ran. The two girls had promising abilities and learned quickly. Within fifty meters, they could hit the slowly moving zombies.

Originally, the soldiers had gathered together, but now the gunshots attracted their attention, starting to scatter. However, because Tang Zheng had been the first to fire, most of them moved in his direction.

"There are a lot coming," Song Xin said, frightened, her hands beginning to tremble, missing her targets. Tao Ran pursed her lips and continued to shoot.

"Don’t worry, keep calm," Tang Zheng said, crouching over a soldier’s corpse. He took off the corpse’s tactical vest; the eight Ammo Clip pouches were stuffed full. There was a sharp military knife in the dagger sheath on the left side of the chest, and a M92F with two Ammo Clips in the leg gun holster—just right to replenish what was used.

"No need for the bulletproof vest." Tang Zheng changed into a new tactical vest and opened the soldier’s backpack, which was filled with various tools laid out haphazardly.

Tang Zheng picked up three hand grenades and found a photo album. Looking at the happy family of three, he sighed and placed the album next to the corpse’s head.

The night wind blew through without laughter, only the thick scent of blood.

With the Zombie horde stirred and converging, the pressure on the survivors increased. They couldn’t achieve headshots with every shot, plus the soldiers were all wearing bulletproof vests, some even with helmets, giving them even stronger defense.

"The zombies aren’t as fast as you. You can use the Human Train Tactics, but remember, always leave depth for retreat," Tang Zheng reminded them as he joined the attack.

The muzzle moved slightly, the index finger pulled the trigger, and amid the rhythmic gunshots, he felled one zombie after another seventy meters away, leaving the closer ones to the four of them.

"Shooting these moving targets is quite satisfying." Dong Zixuan seemed to have a talent for shooting and stayed relatively calm. Gradually, she got the hang of it and took out most of the zombies.

Tang Zheng only shot the more dangerous ones occasionally, spending the rest of the time rummaging through backpacks, collecting hand grenades and Ammo Clips. He switched his assault rifle for one that was better maintained.

After thirty minutes of fighting, although they were weary, Song Xin was very happy. Among the five of them, they had taken down a hundred zombies.

"See those five tanks? They look so mighty. If I knew how to drive them, I could just roll over these zombies," said Zhao Dongtao as he approached the small town. At a glance, he fell in love with these land monsters.

The thick and sturdy 120mm smoothbore cannon was like a knight’s lance, capable of piercing through any shield. The steel tracks seemed designed to roll over every corner of the world. Bullets pinged off them, leaving behind only a few sparks, like the flickering fireflies by the river on a summer night.

"You want to drive? I can teach you. It’s simple," Tang Zheng was familiar with it. Driving a tank was not difficult as long as you didn’t do any high-difficulty maneuvers such as drifting.

"Really? You can drive? I didn’t know that," Zhao Dongtao looked at Tang Zheng with excitement, and even Song Xin was interested. Tao Ran seemed not to have heard and continued to shoot at zombies, taking advantage of the time.

"I learned before. Driving a tank means you don’t have to worry about crashing," Tang Zheng said. He needed a few tank operators. Since the helicopter was out of fuel, he would rely on these machines later on; they were absolute weapons for killing zombies—except, of course, for rare ones like Tyrants.

"I want to drive a tank over cars!" Zhao Dongtao couldn’t wait and began firing at the zombies, hoping to finish them off quickly.

Tang Zheng picked up an M240 General Purpose Machine Gun and carried two Ammunition Boxes, following languidly behind Tao Ran.

As time went on, gunshots rang out in the small town, signaling Kong Licheng and Tong Dahong’s team had lost patience with killing zombies and had entered the town early in search of food.

"Let’s not wait either." Looking at the crowd of zombies, Tang Zheng lay on the ground, setting up the machine gun, fed the bullet chain into the body of the gun, pulled the bolt, and started firing.

The urgent gunshots rang out, and the muzzle erupted in a rhombus-shaped Muzzle flame, bullets forming a Barrage storm sweeping across.

Tang Zheng’s marksmanship was exquisite, bullets practically dancing around the soldiers’ heads, even with helmets they didn’t stop them. The headless bodies fell backward.

"I’ll join in," Zhao Dongtao picked up a machine gun and imitated Tang Zheng, shooting down a swath of zombies like cutting down wheat. But before he could enjoy the moment, they started to rise again.

"You better stick with a gun; this isn’t easy to control," Tang Zheng advised. Being a machine gunner wasn’t so easy, "If you want to learn later, I’ll teach you. For now, focus on mastering the assault rifle." (To be continued. If you like this work, please come to qidian.com to vote for recommendation tickets and monthly tickets.
