Chapter 1153: Chapter 36: Hunting the Indian Group
The power system of the underground laboratory had been repaired by the Biochemical Recycling Squad belonging to Anlanke, who had entered earlier. Hence, the lighting in the breeding area was functioning normally. However, due to its non-critical nature and resource conservation, the lighting was very dim, making the environment appear rather gloomy.
The left eye that Tang Zheng had exposed to the flash grenade had fully recovered, allowing him to see the walls smeared in black and white paint. The floor was littered with feces, with the doors of the breeding rooms distributed along both sides of the passageway having been forcibly smashed open, like a set of broken teeth. This straight passageway resembled the blind gut of a monster, reeking foully.
The Indian man moved slowly like a frightened bird.
"Hmm, just killing him would be a waste, we should capture him alive and interrogate him for information." Tang Zheng’s patience was considerable, and the slowness of the other side allowed him time to think, so he changed tactics and moved sideways, retreating into a breeding room.
Tang Zheng inspected the breeding room to make sure it was safe, while also pricking up his ears to listen to the noises outside.
The footsteps of the Indian man stopped, and he hid by the doorway, sticking his head out to peek, showing one eye, looking left and right. Seeing no danger in the corridor, he breathed a sigh of relief, proud of his response.
If Tang Zheng were lying in ambush, this would have been a moment to blow his head off. The safest method would be to stretch out something reflective first before looking to check the passageway. At the very least, he should have peeked and quickly pulled back, then peeked again from another position.
Taking a deep breath to calm his nerves, the Indian man stepped out of the breeding room, holding an AK47 cautiously as he moved forward in the passageway to catch up with his companions while hesitating, as a large group of Zombie Dogs had been chasing them earlier. It was likely dangerous to proceed alone, but he didn’t know what else to do apart from sticking with the team.
"So annoying." Fear caused the Indian man’s already poor judgment to plummet.
Though Tang Zheng didn’t have a mirror to observe the outside, the other man was so inexperienced that his footsteps gave everything away. After counting to three, Tang Zheng took a stance, suddenly stepping to the right, revealing most of his body in the passageway.
In the scope, the Indian man’s back appeared. Tang Zheng, still at leisure, lowered the muzzle and aimed at his right shoulder, pulling the trigger.
The Indian man, like a fool, had not noticed Tang Zheng and had effectively become a target. Even as the gun fired and he was hit, he didn’t respond until he screamed instinctively, ducked his head, and bent over, trying to dodge the bullet. Only then did he think of running into a nearby breeding room. However, Tang Zheng didn’t give him a chance and shot him in the knee, causing him to howl and fall.
"Help, help!" The Indian man howled as he desperately crawled into the breeding room.
Tang Zheng was concerned that the man might fire back after being hit, given the powerful assault rifle. However, clearly, a newbie wouldn’t think of that, and the injury to his shoulder prevented any such action.
"Poor newbie." Tang Zheng quickly chased after him, shouting in English, "Stop shouting, don’t move, or I’ll blow your head off."
The Indian man’s AK47 became useless as firewood, forgotten. Hearing this, he cried out, even instinctively raising his arms in surrender.
"How many of you are there? Answer me, and I’ll help stop the bleeding!" Tang Zheng crouched down, grabbed the strap of the AK47, and yanked it off with brute force. He checked the bolt but then disappointedly realized it was a civilian semi-automatic version.
"There were fifteen of us, six are dead; I didn’t do anything, I’m a good person!" The Indian man shrieked, clarifying his identity, and as he turned his head and saw Tang Zheng, he mistook him for a staff member because of the white lab coat Tang Zheng had put on earlier.
"What makes you think I should believe you? You’re not one of the employees here. What did you come here for?" Tang Zheng made his voice stern, applying pressure to the Indian man and masquerading his identity to lower his guard, "I’m going to turn you over to the guards, explain it to them."
"I was forced! They came to steal some kind of virus strain; it has nothing to do with me." The Indian man’s resolve was already weak, and with the muzzle of the gun against his head, he spilled everything.
"That’s our secret. How did you know about it?" Tang Zheng pretended to be shocked as he asked the question he wanted to know the most, "Who’s in charge? Did he come? What’s he wearing?"
"A man in his thirties, said to be a doctor, very strong. Anyone who disobeyed him got their legs broken and were thrown to the Zombies. He’s wearing a lab coat he found here, really, I’m not lying; I’ve hated him from the start, please let me go?" The Indian man pleaded with teary eyes, incessantly begging Tang Zheng.
"How many of the remaining nine are women?" Tang Zheng didn’t ask about the men since men are generally more sensitive about the number of women.
"Two, quite beautiful." The Indian man grimaced with pain. Tang Zheng pulled out a folding knife, cut open his trouser leg, tore it into strips, and tied them around the wound to stop the bleeding.
"Of those men, how many can fight? Are there policemen, soldiers, or the like?"
"There are two soldiers, but the strongest is a seventeen-year-old boy trained in Thai boxing." Seeing Tang Zheng helping him staunch the blood, the Indian man felt much more relaxed, thinking his cooperative attitude was working, so he narrated even more eagerly.
