Chapter 71: Suitor

Rise indeed had forgotten about Mitchell, or more like he did not even think of it as important. He had been thinking about his future plans and also being Kamille; how had he even had the time to think of someone else?

Of course, all his attention and thoughts were preoccupied with his Guild Leader.

"Not exactly, I’m not here to visit you." Rise immediately slammed Mitchell, not respecting his thoughts in the slightest. "We’re just here to pass by." He clung again to Kamille, as if to remind Mitchell of who he was with.

Mitchell has a few screws loose; that much was evident from how he almost killed them but was wearing a wide grin when he greeted them with such familiarity.

Naturally, Mitchell’s gaze shifted to Kamille, who still had a cold expression before returning to Rise. His grin faded, and he pursed his lips, as if really hurt.

"My dear... you really... really hurt me this time." Mitchell sighed, as if in pain.

If Rise did not know him, he would be a victim with such a pained expression. Mitchell could really be an actor if the gates did not appear.

"You joined the guild without any warning." Mitchell narrowed his eyes, "What did he offer you? I’ll double it, even triple it." He appeared so determined, maybe not even just tripling the offer.

The darkness shrouding Kamille suddenly grew intense as well, he stared at Mitchell. The atmosphere entered a peculiar tense state. Rise also sensed this, touching his aching head.

Mitchell was truly always troublesome. He was someone who always pursued Rise relentlessly, truly so annoying. He was pursuing him not romantically though, but he wanted to recruit Rise to the Blue Guild.

Rise was a troublemaker, but his prowess was something everyone agreed on; there was no shortage of guilds wanting to recruit him, Mitchell was one of them, and the most persistent one.

"You can’t match Guild Leader’s offer," Rise clung more tightly to Kamille’s arm; if it was not obvious, he made it clear. "Guild Leader did not recruit me, I voluntarily joined the guild."

Surprised flashed across Mitchell’s face, his eyes widened slightly, and he stared at Rise as though wanting to know if he was serious. His jaw clearly tightened, appearing reluctant to accept this.

Rise guessed because he felt defeated, his ego being trampled on. Mitchell being the Guild Leader of the most arrogant guild, of course, he should be the most superior one.

"I’m serious." Rise clarified, wanting to make it even more clear as to stop Mitchell from dreaming of recruiting him ever again.

In the past, perhaps he did not make it clear, and so Mitchell’s hostility against Kamille was known to the whole federation, always provoking him whenever they met.

He must have felt that Kamille defeated him or something.

Mitchell blankly stared at him, then at his arm clinging tightly to Kamille.

"And I won’t let him go." At this moment, Kamille finally spoke; he also stepped forward slightly, shielding Rise securely in his arms. He stared directly into Mitchell’s eyes. "He’s very important to me."

Kamille’s words were sincere, as they always had been. After all, he was his personal guide. And so, while he knew this was the case and the reason Kamille said those words, it did not stop the wide and delighted smile from appearing on Rise’s lips.

Mitchell blinked, his gaze stared at Kamille’s actions and the arm that was almost embracing Rise. A few seconds later, his expression turned unsightly, and the dangerous air grew intense.

"You don’t deserve him." Mitchell nearly growled, and Rise was even surprised.

Sure, Mitchell was insane, almost at the same level as him. Still, this was far too intense, right? Was it that serious that Kamille managed to recruit him and he didn’t?

Rise was often conceited, but not to the point when he thought of himself as the must-have Esper in the Guild to warrant Mitchell’s pursuit.

"And you do?" The corners of Kamille’s lips twisted in a smile, as though taunting the other.

Mitchell paused; he glared at Kamille, aware of the provocation.

"No one will," Mitchell answered, giving question marks to Rise, who was listening. What he was on about now? With a firm gaze, he continued, "That’s why... That’s why, I’m trying to."

His gaze grew fiercer, and the walls and the ground shook.

"Kamille Han! I challenged you..." Mitchell exhaled. "If I win, let go of him."

Dumbfounded, Rise could not stay silent anymore. This Mitchell really wants a beating. Being a Guild Leader for a few years must be getting in his head.

Before he could interrupt, Kamille responded.

"I refuse." He shook his head.

Both looked at him in surprise.

Even the almost hysterical Akira and Riri, who were not part of the discussion, could not help but watch this rare spectacle.

"I won’t decide for him." Kamille’s steady voice sounded again. He turned to Rise and asked, "Should I accept his challenge?" Different when he was talking with Mitchell; his tone was much softer or returning to his usual tone.

Rise blinked, not processing it for a moment. During this conversation, he felt something was really off. He could not keep up with these changes. And all this was because...

His blaming gaze landed on Mitchell, who flinched the moment their gazes met.

"Rise..." He called, sounding pitiful or what, but it did not affect Rise.

"You fucking... Are you so jobless?" Rise did not show the same facade when talking with Mitchell in public, respecting him as the Guild Leader of a great Guild. "What challenge! Even if you win, which is impossible, I will not leave the Guild Leader!"

Pain flashed through Mitchell’s eyes again, barely noticeable, only Kamille did. Kamille’s gaze darkened.

Rise exhaled heavily, stressed by how they came to this point. Seriously, he could not catch a break for a moment.

"Mitchell..." For the first time, he called the other’s name, making Mitchell stiffen. "I will not join your guild."

Mitchell’s lips quivered; he breathed. "I thought you wouldn’t join any guild."

That was really the case—one of the reasons or excuses he gave Mitchell whenever the other wanted to recruit him.

’I will never join any guild! I want to be free! Being a Union member is already the most I can tolerate.’

After all, being a Union member, he was not as restricted as when joining a guild.

’I won’t give you a restrictive contract; just join the guild with me.’ Mitchell had once insisted or even pleaded when he succeeded the Guild Leader position, determined to recruit Rise.

At that time, he laughed, amused that Mitchell seemed to be able to abuse his power for him.

He still rejected. Looking at the wide field, Rise smiled and said something that made Mitchell stop recruiting him for a while.

Back to this present, Rise repeated what he said back then.

"I like the way it is now."

Same words, different meanings and situations. Even the sincerity appeared more different but more intense.

Mitchell could not say anything for a few seconds after that.
