Chapter 46: Choose

Rise had spent another half an hour in the base before he left and returned to the headquarters. However, he took longer to return because there weren’t any proper means of transportation on the wasteland.

He could use Dino’s, the leader’s, car, which had already become his subordinate, albeit by force, but he did not want to be seen around them. His involvement with them was best left in the shadows.

With it, he could prevent dealing with another boring trouble.

Having his quick dinner, he returned to his room. Rise only played with his phone, reading some threads on forums, and soon he fell asleep.

With the way he acted, Rise did not appear to be someone in an urgent situation. Rise’s way of living despite the future continued as it always had, and it was unlikely to change.

The next day, after his brunch, Rise arrived at Kamille’s office.

Unlike before, he did not invite himself but Kamille specifically called for him.

With the same setup, Rise sat across Kamille, smiling affectionately. He always looked more relaxed and almost silly in the other’s presence.

"Why did you call for me, Guild Leader?"

Although Rise had a strong hunch, he still asked.

Rise flipped a folder, then put it on the table.

"As part of our deal. I’ll also let you choose the gates," Kamille gestured.

Since Rise wanted them to do gate raids alone for a few weeks leading to the Annual Guild Convention, Kamille also decided to give the decision to him.

Unsurprised, Rise took the folder and began reading them. This time, unlike with the contract, he was more meticulous in reading and choosing the right gate.

Gates also have their own rank, but most importantly, not anyone could register to raid them, especially if it was in the scope of a Guild jurisdiction.

As for the Union, they had extensive choices for gates and missions—one more reason Rise chose to join the Union.

Flipping with the available guilds, Rise already ignored the lower-rank gates, they were useless, and he would not tarnish his Guild Leader’s reputation by raiding them with him.

He naturally looked for the B or A rank gates. Most of these on the list seemed like wild gates, which were not under anyone’s jurisdiction, although the government administered them.

While he was choosing and thinking of locations that could help him strengthen his relationship with Kamille, Kamille suddenly spoke.

"You’re getting familiar with the city." He sounded calm, nothing sort of suspicious accusations in his words—more like just bringing it up to have a conversation with Rise.

Rise paused and lifted his gaze and met Kamille’s.

He nodded and gave a smile. "I am, and it’s good, more interesting than the capital."

From the majority’s perspective, it was a lie. Who would dare compare the yellow zones on the capital? Yet, if it came from Rise, it sounded like he was telling the truth.

Kamille also thought it sounded ridiculous, the corner of his lips lifted, amused. "How interesting?"

"It’s not peaceful."

At this, Kamille also could not help but chuckle again. This was an answer that one would suspect from Rise.

Rise once more got entranced by Kamille’s sudden laugh.

"I’m saying the truth, though?" He spoke as though clarifying and defending himself, but there was a clear smile on his lips.

Kamille did not respond, his smile only widened. Somehow it looked relaxed, not his usual composed expression. Kamille himself did not know why he was like this with Rise.

Or perhaps because of their compatibility that he was like this. There was something with Rise that naturally calmed him down, just like when the other was guiding him.

It was intriguing but refreshing.

Rise flipped once more at the papers, then boldly asked without looking at Kamille.

"Do you want to know where I went?"

There was a pause, and Rise could not see Kamille’s expression, but he seemed to sense it as the other’s smile did not falter.

"Will you say it?"

Finally, Rise laughed, leaning at the armrest. He looked up and made eye contact with Kamille once more. He winked and mouthed, somehow provocatively.

"Do you want me to?"

Amused, Kamille shook his head, seemingly helpless.

"It’s fine. It’s your business." He was merely curious.

Rise, once more, laughed.

For Kamille, he did not mind, actually. And, it was not entirely his business.

Still, since Kamille did not insist, Rise could just brush it off for now.

A comfortable silence ensued once more for a few minutes.

"Here." Rise put the folder on the table. Giving a sheepish smile, "It’s fine to occupy all the dates, right?"

Kamille gave him a deep glance. "You don’t want to take a vacation?"

Rise laughed as if he found it funny.

"Nope. This is also a vacation."

For Rise, gate raids were also a kind of vacation, where else could he go to different places? He was not a romantic person who liked beaches and similar tourist spots.

Kamille stared at him deeper. Rise was really a fighting maniac.

"Then, go ahead. I’m fine with everything."

Rise almost jumped out of his seat. Kamille was such an indulging Guild Leader! Feeling excited, he began introducing his choices.

While he wanted more gates to fill all the days of the few weeks before the gathering, after pondering it, he only chose four gates in total.

Kamille listened and looked at the chosen gates.

Three of which were A-rank gates and one B-rank. At some point, Rise even thought of also choosing an S-rank gate and visiting a black zone, but it might be too much.

Perhaps, next time.

"Why not choose all A-rank gates?" Kamille inquired, just curious.

Rise gave a knowing smile, the type that simply taunted Kamille to bit those lips once more. He always had this charm of annoying someone with that smile, which gained the "punchable smile" title.

For Kamille, it was different; it evoked desire.

Being stared at like prey, Rise shrugged with heated cheeks.

"I find it interesting."

An unconvincing answer, but Kamille, like usual, did not expose him. His gaze only became darker.

Rise almost thought that him being mysterious aroused Kamille, or something. In fact, it was the truth! Kamille found Rise so attractive for some reason when he obviously lied without a change in his expression, even smiling beautifully.

"Interesting, huh?" Kamille averted his gaze from Rise and looked at the details.

How interesting was it?

The B-rank gate was also a wild gate, just like the A-rank gate Rise chose. Most of them were far away and did not have any yellow zones around. The location of it...

Unsurprisingly, its location captured Kamille’s attention.

A B-rank was one of the common ranks of a gate; there was not much of a surprise there, but if it emerged to a zone where the space was too chaotic and the haven of A-rank gates, that was very unusual.

Kamille himself did not check the gates from the documents when he made Rise choose; there were a lot of gates, and not all of them would evoke his interest.

Much less a B-rank gate.

A Chaotic Zone. The title was not the same as the color zones, which were used to identify the severity of the location in humanity.

Green Zones were naturally the safest cities with more advanced barriers and were the firm foothold of the federation. Yellow Zones, which were the guild headquarters, were located, and human influence and gate invasion coincided. As for Red Zones and Black Zones, they carried a similar nature of being a no-man zone.

Only that Black Zones were in the extreme spectrum, being completely in the hands of monsters, and an S-rank gate was located there. A real forbidden zone.

A Chaotic Zone, however, was a location with space instability, and gates were most likely to emerge. Yet it did not necessarily have to be a higher rank, and it also did not have to be a huge area as well.

In where Rise chose, the chaotic zone had recorded A-rank gates emerging before, and as per the government’s knowledge, it would only create A-rank gates like how chaotic zones’s behavior would.

Rise found it interesting not only because of its location; he knew more. A special artifact was inside that gate. He had to get it!

"Interesting, isn’t it?" Rise teased.

Kamille nodded, not saying more.

The Gate was interesting, but would it be more intriguing than Rise? Kamille did not think so.

After sorting out the chosen gates, the next step was to register for them. They were wild gates and were open to be purchased by the public, one A-rank was even a public gate.

Rise watched Kamille talk to someone on the phone, most likely a union employee. Most Guild Leaders only leave this kind of task to their secretaries, but Kamille had to do it himself.

Of course, that was only because he did not have a secretary, and Hayes was only taking that position sometimes.

Suddenly, Rise abruptly offered, speaking what he had in mind.

"I can be your secretary." In fact, rather than saying it to Kamille, Rise really only voiced out his sudden thoughts accidentally.

Kamille, who was speaking on the phone, obviously heard Rise. He froze slightly and asked, "What?"

He stared at Rise incredulously. The other people in the line thought Kamille was still talking with him and asked, but his attention was not on them anymore.

Rise also realized what he had said. He was not as ashamed because of accidentally blurting his thoughts. As a matter of fact, he had this sudden realization.

Wait, that was not a bad idea.
