Chapter 33: Perfect Compatibility, Indeed
Chapter 33: Perfect Compatibility, Indeed
What are the odds of having 100% compatibility between Esper and a Guide? At least, none have been recorded in history; even above 90, it was considered a legend.
In today’s age, having 90% in wavelength compatibility was already called Perfect Compatibility and it was extremely rare. The gates had been here for over a hundred years, and the relationship between Espers and Guides was also known and established around the same time.
That was until Rise and Kamille measured their compatibility. And in Rise’s memory, it was also shockingly high, something that would create an uproar if the word got out, definitely earning several world records.
However, it was definitely not perfect compatibility in its truest sense. It was not 100% at all, but 97%.
The compatibility between them was only 97%, so... How come it was now 100%? What was this change? And how did it change?
For a moment, instead of being happy, Rise’s heart sank, his thoughts immediately thinking of many scenarios. Such as his rebirth carried a significant change, that a lot of things would change from then on... and a lot more.
"This is..." Kamille spoke, which made Rise snap out of his thoughts, regaining his calmness.
Both of them were still surprised.
"Crazy." Rise continued for him. Kamille nodded and agreed.
It was indeed crazy. For a moment, they could only stare at the numbers that continued to flicker on the screen of the device. Both were seemingly in a daze, thoughts running through their heads.
Kamille had expected this... but a hundred percent? This was unheard of. Seconds later, he turned and glanced at Rise. As his habit, whenever he wanted to know something or in times something he found puzzling, he would always turn on his true sight.
However, at this moment, he did not do that. He only stared at Rise’s face. There was only one thing inside his mind:
How could he be so lucky to encounter him? At this point, he did not care anymore what his motives were, Kamille would not let him go. These thoughts, which were unlikely to appear in his mind before, began to sprout one after another.
Rise sensed Kamille’s gaze and also turned to the side, meeting those eyes. It was not gray, but his real hazel pupils.
Oh? He did not turn on his true sight?
A grin automatically appeared on his lips, stretching through his eyes. "Guild Leader, you’re so lucky to have me as your personal guide."
This time, Kamille did not hide his emotions, the corner of his lips slightly lifted.
"Indeed... I am." He agreed.
At this, Rise finally burst out laughing, his body collapsing at Kamille’s body. He forgot his concern or about the future, he was just overjoyed that Kamille admitted it with his words.
So the originally about to be dismissed Rise spent the whole day inside Kamille’s office. He only stayed on the couch as Kamille continued with his work. Being Guild Leader did not end with just the battlefield, there was more to it.
Rise, used to this scene, did not bother him. Occasionally, he would help, just like instincts. He was not knowledgeable about most paperwork or official documents regarding gates or missions, but he could still help with the basics.
Just like that, Rise’s first day as the Dark Crimson Guild member and Kamille’s personal Guide, ended.
The Dark Crimson Guild was located at the north of the federation, in one of the yellow zones. Most of the guilds were actually stationed in yellow zones, and the gates around them were part of their jurisdiction.
Unlike red zones, yellow zones were still a complete city with civilians living on them. The only difference from green zones, obviously, was that occasional monster invasions or gates appearing while one was walking on the street were a common occurrence.
It was unstable, but the people were mostly used to this, and they knew a guild was there to protect them.
Under their jurisdiction, the guilds like Dark Crimson were like the highest authority in their respective zones, just second to the government, and even that was debatable,
The Dark Crimson Guild headquarters was the highest building in the city with over forty floors. In yellow zones, buildings could not be higher than fifty floors, or they would already be an easy target for monsters in the sky. Most buildings were around twenty floors, which was the highest, or just like the guild headquarters, around thirty or forty.
Like others, Rise was given his own room in the building. As his perk of being the Guild Leader’s personal guide, Rise could choose what he wanted to be his room.
Naturally, Rise chose his room in the past. It also happened that it was the room just opposite Kamille’s room. Just like before, Kamille went easy on him and just let him choose it.
After all, for Kamille, it was only a room. It was just that no other guild members dared covet it before.
"Tomorrow, we’ll assemble in the meeting room." Kamille led Rise to his room, stopping before the door. "I’ll introduce you to the party."
That was one thing, but they also had to have a meeting at the next gate they would take.
Holding the door, Rise nodded, indicating he understood. Looking at each other, he invited. "Guild Leader, do you want to enter the room?"
Kamille paused, stared at Rise for a second, but soon shook his head.
"I still have something to do." He did not lie; he had to discuss something with Hayes. And also, Kamille found himself unable to become rational whenever he was alone with Rise; who knew what might happen after he entered that room?
Rise bit his lips, restraining his laugh. He was not disappointed as well. There would be a lot of opportunities in the future; Kamille would not be able to run next time.
Still, he sighed and pursed his lips, seemingly sad but understanding.
"Then... see you tomorrow, Guild Leader."
Kamille opened his mouth, about to say something, but closed it again. He nodded and bid farewell.
"Just rest." After saying that, he turned around and prepared to go down. He sensed Rise’s scorching gaze, seemingly wanting to melt him. He did not turn around though, but when he was already in the elevator, their eyes met again.
The two just stared at each other until the elevator closed, ending their eye contact.
