Chapter 55: June’s path(1)

It didn’t take long before

June’s sharp golden eyes tracked the sky, narrowing as two massive shadows swept overhead.

Wyverns. Big ones. Level 17.

They circled lazily at first, wings slicing the clouds like scythes, their long necks craning down to scan the ruined ground below. Even from a distance, June could see the jagged black claws, the rows of jagged teeth, the faint glow of mana condensing in their throats.

He exhaled slowly.

No hesitation.

"Mana Art: Dragon Heart."

The world ignited inside his chest. Mana slammed through his veins like molten steel, roaring through every nerve ending. His muscles screamed under the force, his vision sharpened to a blade’s edge.

And then June shot forward.

With a sharp burst of speed, he launched himself upward, rocketing off the shattered earth in a mana-fueled leap that left cracks spiderwebbing across the ground.

The first wyvern shrieked, its jaws opening wide as it dove to meet him.

Too slow.

June twisted mid-air, sword raised.

CLANG!

He slammed the flat of the blade against the wyvern’s snout, twisting sharply, driving the beast’s head sideways with sheer impact. Before it could recover, June planted one foot against its jaw and vaulted higher.

The second wyvern swooped in from above, claws outstretched.

"Flashstep."

He vanished.

Reappeared above the beast’s wing, sword already slicing downward. The blade bit deep, severing tendons, spraying hot blood into the air. The wyvern roared, its wing jerking uselessly as it spiraled.

June didn’t wait.

He dove, driving his sword downward, punching it straight into the soft gap between neck and shoulder. He gritted his teeth as he forced it deeper, twisting sharply —

The wyvern’s body convulsed once, twice —

Then it dropped.

Hard.

The second wyvern came screaming back, green-blue energy crackling in its throat.

June hit the ground running.

He blurred across the battlefield, dodging left, right, twisting between blasts of mana that shattered trees and tore craters into the earth. His eyes locked on the wyvern’s underbelly, the softest part, the only real opening.

He shot forward.

Sword raised.

The wyvern lunged — claws slashing down, jaws snapping.

June dove under the claws, rolled, sprang up — and drove his blade deep into the wyvern’s gut.

It shrieked.

Reared back.

June grabbed one of the hanging scales, climbed up, slashing furiously, cutting deep furrows into the beast’s hide as he ascended. The wyvern thrashed, its body convulsing, but June clung on with a wild, feral grin.

Near the shoulder.

Near the heart.

He flipped the blade in his hand, mana spiraling down the edge.

"Sword Magic: Severance Spiral."

He plunged the weapon in deep, twisting, unleashing the full vortex of cutting force right into the wyvern’s chest.

The creature let out a final, shuddering scream — and collapsed.

June dropped to the ground, panting, bloody, his body trembling from the aftershocks of overdrawn mana.

Two massive corpses hit the earth behind him, their wings twitching once, then falling still.

June wiped the blood from his mouth, eyes sharp, grin wide.

"Mid-difficulty..." he muttered. "What a joke."

His chest heaved. His arms shook. But he stood tall.

"Next."

June stood over the two collapsed wyverns, panting, his sword dripping blood. His body was battered — shoulders scorched, arms trembling, his knees threatening to buckle under the lingering weight of Dragon Heart’s strain.

He exhaled slowly, letting his grin stretch wide.

"runt" he murmured again, spitting blood into the dirt. "Could’ve been worse."

But then.

The air twisted.

June’s golden eyes snapped up, narrowing sharply.

The wyvern corpses jerked.

Their massive bodies, split open and scorched, convulsed unnaturally. Black veins pulsed through torn flesh, glowing faintly with corrupted mana. The twisted energy surged, twisting muscle, fusing cracked bones, patching wounds with something unnatural

And then, as June watched with growing fury,

they split.

Two massive wyverns became four.

The copies weren’t exact they were slightly smaller, slightly rougher, their bodies hissing faintly with unstable mana —

but they were alive.

And they were already lunging forward.

June’s pulse spiked hard.

He gritted his teeth, planting his feet wide. huh," he muttered. "Fine."

The first wyvern slammed down, claws tearing through the air. June vanished in a burst of speed —

FLASHSTEP.

He reappeared above the second wyvern, driving his blade downward in a hard, arcing strike. The creature twisted mid-air, intercepting his blow with a burst of wing, the impact blasting him sideways.

June flipped, caught his balance, and hit the ground running — only for two more wyverns to surge at him from opposite flanks.

He ducked under the first’s jaws, twisting sharply to slam his elbow into its throat, driving it back. The second came roaring in with claws bared —

June caught the claws on his sword’s edge, sparks flying, his knees buckling under the sheer force. His arms screamed in protest, his muscles straining, his teeth clenched so tight his jaw ached.

But he held.

With a snarl, he twisted sharply, wrenching the blade free, dragging a deep gash down the wyvern’s arm. He spun, dragging mana up his arms, flooding power into his weakening body.

"Mana Art: Dragon Heart... OVERDRAW."

The mana slammed into him like a storm.

His body buckled. His vision blurred. Blood trickled from his nose, his ears. But his grip tightened, his legs steadied, his speed doubled.

He shot forward, slamming into one wyvern’s side, driving his blade up into its ribs. He dragged it along the body’s length, tearing through flesh, bones, organs. The wyvern shrieked, stumbling —

The second dove for his back.

June spun. His blade sang.

A spiraling wave of cutting force tore through the air —

SWORD MAGIC: SEVERANCE SPIRAL.

The vortex hit two wyverns at once, ripping deep gashes through their bodies, spraying corrupted mana and ichor across the battlefield.

They reeled. But they didn’t fall.

June stumbled, chest heaving, his vision narrowing.

His body was burning, shaking, dangerously close to collapse.

But he didn’t stop.

He grit his teeth, raised his sword again, and lunged.

The third wyvern came shrieking down, fangs bared. June dodged at the last second, pivoting hard, driving his sword directly into the base of its skull. With a furious shout, he dragged the blade sideways, severing the spinal cord.

The creature convulsed, collapsed —

THREE.

The last two swarmed together.

June’s legs wobbled. His arms barely lifted. But his eyes burned.

He let them close.

Waited until the jaws were inches away —

and then, at the last second,

FLASHSTEP.

He reappeared above them both, sword raised.

His whole body shook as he dragged the last of his mana into the blade. His vision swam, his heart screamed, his lungs burned.

But he let it all go.

"SEVERANCE SPIRAL — FINAL DRIVE!"

The vortex exploded outward, carving down through both wyverns, tearing through bone, scale, sinew.

Their shrieks filled the air.

And then,

at last,

they fell.

June landed hard, crumpling to one knee, his sword digging into the dirt to keep himself upright. His breath came in ragged, painful bursts, sweat dripping from his jaw, blood streaking down his arms.

He lifted his head slowly, eyes narrowing, grin wide despite the exhaustion.

..." he rasped, voice raw. "...Still a joke."

And then he collapsed onto his back, staring up at the warped, pulsing sky, laughing breathlessly as his vision became blurly
