Chapter 45: The Reunion
Chapter 45: The Reunion
Standing in the center of his room inside the Beaumont family estate in the royal capital, Dominic took a deep breath.
It had been five days since he requested an audience with His Majesty, he bring with him the documents as evidence and a detailed diagram of the summoning magic circle.
After persistent efforts, he finally managed to convince both the Prime Minister and the Chief Administrator, who had initially shown hesitation.
At last, he gained the King’s approval to send a letter of protest to the neighboring country, Dalmasca.
In addition to that, he succeeded in getting military reinforcements sent from the Supreme Commander of the Military Forces to the Dashtadem Fortress, and also received permission from the Central Magic Association to dispatch fifty high-ranking mages.
The road to get there had been long and full of setbacks. One obstacle after another.
Time was running out, so Dominic didn’t have the luxury of choosing his words carefully.
It hadn’t helped that his father was away on a campaign all the way in Arcadia—two regions over—so he couldn’t ask him for support.
And there were no extra forces to spare from the royal capital, which only made everything more difficult to finalize.
But now, with a clear promise that the troops would leave the capital by tomorrow, Dominic decided to return to the fortress ahead of them.
Truthfully, he couldn’t stand being away from Shiao Yi any longer.
His one and only. His partner.
Even if he couldn’t hold him close, just seeing Shiao Yi’s beloved face would be enough to fill him with happiness.
Dominic brought both hands together in front of his chest and called out to Shiao Yi with all his heart.
He poured every ounce of emotion into his voice, hoping it would reach even the far ends of the world.
"Shiao! Come to me! Please come get me!"
Shiao Yi’s reply came almost immediately.
"Dominic. I’ve been waiting. I’ll tell Louis that your message came through, and then I’ll come get you. Just wait there."
Dominic thought to himself, Forget about that Loius, you can just come now. Right now would be better.
And before long, Shiao Yi appeared.
He slipped out of the sky without a sound. In the blink of an eye, he was there.
It couldn’t be helped that Dominic pulled him close and held him tight against his chest.
Dominic had wanted to see him.
Desperately. To the point it nearly drove him mad.
When their lips met, he poured all of his emotions into the kiss, devouring Shiao Yi with raw longing. For a moment, he even wanted to push him down right there and then.
Shiao Yi tapped Dominic on the back, as if to say, Calm down. Settle yourself.
Only then did Dominic finally release him.
Shiao Yi’s face was flushed red with heat, but his eyes remained calm as he spoke.
"Dominic. The situation’s changed. It looks like the Dalmasca Army might arrive at the old campsite—maybe tomorrow or the day after."
Dominic stared into Shiao Yi’s face, his body tensing all over.
"That’s fast. The reinforcements won’t make it in time."
As Dominic clenched his fists in frustration, Shiao Yi stepped away from him and began to look curiously around the room.
"So... this is your house? Your room?"
"Yeah, it is. Why?"
"Hmm... so this is the kind of room you live in."
Shiao Yi looked around, examining everything with interest.
"There’s nothing strange about it, right? It’s just a normal room. If anything, it’s pretty plain. Doesn’t have much in the way of decorations."
Dominic had never been a fan of unnecessary ornaments.
Everything in the room was chosen for practical use.
His father is a Grand General, he also had no interest in shiny decorations or expensive things.
He preferred simple and sturdy items—things that suited a knight’s life. In that way, Dominic was very much like his father.
His mother had probably been dissatisfied with that.
Even though their family is a viscount, their house itself was plain and unadorned.
The building was simple.
The whole idea was that it only needed to be big enough for the family and their servants to live in, and maybe have a few guest rooms for the occasional visitor.
That had always been something Dominic and his father agreed on.
"Oh, right," Dominic said, suddenly remembering. "I found some clothes for you, Shiao."
Dominic pulled out a few outfits from the wardrobe.
He had almost forgotten to bring them in all the excitement of seeing Shiao Yi again.
The joy had made him careless. It was unlike him to lose his composure like this.
"O-oh? Thanks, Dominic," Shiao Yi said with a smile and immediately began changing into one of the outfits.
Dominic had avoided anything too flashy—nothing with lace or ribbons—because he knew Shiao Yi wouldn’t like that. He picked something with little decoration, something simple and comfortable.
"Ah, it fits perfectly. Yeah, this one’s good," Shiao Yi said with satisfaction.
The shirt’s sleeves and collar seemed to fit him just right.
The outfit he chose was a long-sleeved shirt in a pale sky-blue color, paired with a long, dark blue vest.
It was actually one of Dominic’s favorites, so he felt happy that Shiao Yi had picked it.
But then Shiao Yi caught Dominic watching him with a big smile on his face. His eyes narrowed suspiciously.
"What? Dominic. What are you thinking? You’re not going to tell me I look bad, are you?"
"No, no, not at all. You look good. Yeah, it suits you really well. You look... so cute."
"...That’s not all, is it? Spill it."
"Well... it was hard to find your size. I went around to a few shops, and then I tried a place that sells kids’ clothes... and it fit perfectly."
"..."
Shiao Yi clearly didn’t like hearing that. He frowned deeply in disapproval.
Dominic found his reaction too funny to hold back. He couldn’t help it—he burst into laughter, loud and heartfelt.
