Chapter 863: Chapter 867: To be Your Bride Again in the Next Life
"Classmate, that was really rude. I’m not a fly, oh, and by the way, you should be calling me ’teacher’ as well," Yang Gang said.
"Teacher?" Sun Li’s eyebrows conveyed a hint of disdain, "You?"
"Mr. Yang serves as the acting director of internal medicine at the university’s medical school, with a monthly salary of eight thousand yuan." Yang Gang gestured the number eight with his hands.
"Pfft—eight thousand yuan..." Sun Li curled his lip, "Maybe don’t flaunt that amount in front of a beauty, huh?"
"No no no, even if I made a thousand yuan a month, this beauty wouldn’t despise me," Yang Gang said, and immediately took Zhang Miao’s hand, adding, "Wife, wouldn’t you agree?"
Cough cough!
Sun Li choked, his normally unflappable composure violently shaken.
With a face full of exasperation, he said, "Wife? You really have some nerve. Let go of her hand now!"
"What’s all the fuss about. Which law in the Federal Constitution states you can’t hold your own wife’s hand?" Yang Gang retorted.
At this point, Zhang Miao chuckled and said, "Let me introduce you. This is my husband Yang Gang, and this is Sun Li, a literature enthusiast we’ve just met."
Sun Li’s face was a mask of shock, slightly dazed.
"He, he’s really your husband?" It took Sun Li a while to come to his senses.
He saw that Zhang Miao was pregnant, which suggested she might be married.
But subconsciously, he discounted this fact.
Being pregnant doesn’t necessarily mean marriage, after all—there are plenty of unmarried pregnancies.
So, when Zhang Miao herself said that she was married, Sun Li finally woke up from the fantasy he had spun for himself.
It was quite a blow.
Zhang Miao nodded and said with a smile, "My husband didn’t mean any harm; he was just joking with you. Please don’t take it to heart."
"Heh heh heh." The corners of Sun Li’s mouth twitched, "No, no problem. I have something else to do, I’ll be off first."
Li Qingyang had gone to the restroom and upon returning to his post saw Sun Li scrambling to leave the library.
Curiosity piqued.
It was the first time he’d seen Sun Li so flustered.
"Sun Li, what happened?" Li Qingyang asked, curious.
Sun Li managed a wry smile, "That beauty’s already married, and her husband’s here."
"Huh?" Li Qingyang turned his head for a glance and his face fell.
"Why, why oh why! How come both the father and son of the Yang family have such good luck with romance! Back in the day, Hangcheng’s top beauty, Bai Ninglu, got pursued by the least reliable man, Yang Lin, and now Yang Lin’s son has married such a stunning woman. Here I am, filled with talent, yet still single—this, I cannot accept!"
"Hey, Teacher Li, are you all right?" Sun Li asked.
"I’m fine, I just realized today that all those tales of fair maidens and scholars are lies," Teacher Li let out a long sigh.
Sun Li felt a drop of sweat on his forehead, "Come on, Teacher Li, pull yourself together."
Just then, an elegant voice said, "Excuse me, please."
Based on the pleasing sound, Teacher Li guessed this person must be a beautiful woman.
Indeed.
The girl had delicate features and a stunning figure, and apart from an energy slightly lesser than Zhang Miao’s due to her age, she was on par with Zhang Miao in other aspects.
"Oh, I remember, your name is Gu Xiaorou, isn’t it?" Li Qingyang suddenly recalled something.
"A student from this school?" Sun Li asked.
Li Qingyang nodded, "I remember, she’s supposedly Yang Gang’s girlfriend. Eh? Girlfriend? Wife?"
Li Qingyang glanced at Gu Xiaorou, then looked inside the library at Zhang Miao, his face sinking once more.
"Yang Gang, you scoundrel, where are you getting this kind of luck with women!"
"Hehehe." Gu Xiaorou didn’t understand, why was the old man looking so depressed? What was going on?
She said again, "Excuse me, I need to get through."
Sun Li and Li Qingyang moved aside to let Gu Xiaorou pass.
Sun Li’s gaze flickered, seemingly lost in thought.
Meanwhile, Gu Xiaorou walked straight over to Zhang Miao. She glanced at Yang Gang and was surprised, "Gangzi, what are you doing here?"
"I’m here to protect my two wives, of course," Yang Gang said.
"Two wives..." Gu Xiaorou’s face was streaked with black lines. She looked at Zhang Miao and added, "Sister Miao, are you sure it’s okay to marry this kind of man?"
Zhang Miao spread her hands, "Someone has got to marry Gangzi after all. As Buddha said: ’If I don’t go to Hell, who will?’"
After finishing, Zhang Miao laughed again, "Xiaorou, why don’t you take the role and marry him for me?"
Gu Xiaorou broke into a sweat and shook her head vigorously, "No, no, no. I better not. I know my limits; I just can’t tie down Gangzi’s wayward heart."
She paused and then with a smile, she added, "But honestly, I never expected Sister Miao to marry Gangzi. I always thought it would be Yang Fei."
"Indeed, I never saw it coming myself," Zhang Miao laughed softly.
Young Master Yang didn’t dare to make a sound on the side.
"Oh, right, Little Xi and I are going shopping, I’d better go." Zhang Miao looked at Yang Gang, "Gangzi, keep Xiaorou company. I’m leaving you with a mission: look after Xiaorou properly, don’t let her get taken away by some guy with a dubious background."
Yang Gang immediately saluted, "Sister Miao, rest assured, I swear to complete the mission."
The corner of Gu Xiaorou’s mouth twitched slightly.
Zhang Miao smiled and then left.
Yang Gang immediately sat down next to Gu Xiaorou, full of enthusiasm.
Gu Xiaorou rolled her eyes and moved to the side, "Don’t get touchy-feely! Really, I’m worried for Sister Miao. Is it really okay to marry this kind of guy?"
Yang Gang chuckled, "Shall we take a walk around the school?"
"Alright, since you’re not here to study anyway," Gu Xiaorou nodded.
The two then left the library and wandered the green, winding paths of the university.
They didn’t say much, and Yang Gang pretended to casually grasp Gu Xiaorou’s hand.
Gu Xiaorou struggled a bit, but didn’t pull her hand away from Yang Gang’s; she gave up instead.
"Gangzi, once you’re married, you must remain loyal to your marriage. We can’t do this, it’s a betrayal to your Sister Miao," Gu Xiaorou said.
Suddenly, Yang Gang pulled Gu Xiaorou into his embrace and said lightly, "It took me twenty years to understand my feelings, twenty years to realize how important she is to me, yet I can’t dress her in a wedding gown, can’t hold her in my sleep, can’t put my ear against her belly to listen to our child’s heartbeat.."
Before he could finish, Yang Gang’s mouth was sealed by Gu Xiaorou’s tender lips.
With closed eyes, on tiptoes, her arms wrapped around Yang Gang’s neck, she kissed him.
Moments later, she released her lips, looking up at Yang Gang’s eyes with tears and smiled, "Gangzi, if there is a next life, I’ll be your bride then."
Yang Gang’s chest felt torn apart, tears rolled in his eyes, yet they did not fall.
He hugged Gu Xiaorou tightly.
"You promised, no taking it back."
"Mm."
At the end of the path, with her back to them, Su Xiaoxi covered her mouth, her eyes full of tears.
Zhang Miao’s eyes were also moist.
"Let’s go," Zhang Miao said, pulling Su Xiaoxi away.
They arrived at a deserted sentry post, where Su Xiaoxi sat on a bench, hugging her knees, "Isn’t there any way to avoid the disaster of death?"
Zhang Miao didn’t speak; she leaned against a wooden post, gazing into the sky, lost in thought.
