Chapter 702: Chapter 705: Don’t Be So Sure of Yourself!_1

"Zhang Yu?" Yang Fei, standing next to Yang Gang, also picked up the telescope when she heard the name ’Zhang Yu’: "Ah, it really is him!"

"A friend of yours?" Bai Tong asked curiously.

"Well, about that..."

At that moment, Gu Ge came out of the house: "What’s going on?"

"This..." Yang Fei hesitated for a moment, pointed outside the base, and said, "Zhang Yu is there."

"Zhang Yu?" Gu Ge’s expression didn’t change much. She picked up the telescope and her face twitched slightly.

"Hey, Feifei, no forming cliques. It’s not cool for you to know secrets that we’re not privy to." Bai Tong paused, then grinned: "How about this. We exchange intelligence. You tell me who Zhang Yu is, and I’ll share a little secret about Yang Gang."

"Gu Xiaorou’s ex-boyfriend!" Yang Fei blurted out immediately.

On the other hand, Gu Ge looked quite awkward.

"Hmm?" Bai Tong blinked and smirked: "Interesting. Miss Gu running into her ex in the Land of Fallen certainly hints at unresolved feelings. You sure are lucky in love, Miss Gu. Right here in Illa Town, an ex, a current boyfriend, and a loyal suitor. To be a woman and have all this.."

"Are you done talking?" Gu Ge shot Bai Tong a cold look.

"Er, sorry. I didn’t mean any harm. I was just trying to lighten the mood. My apologies."

"I’m going down for a bit." Yang Gang suddenly said.

Without missing a beat, he summoned an Ice Dragon and rode it straight down.

"I’ll go take a look too." With that, Gu Ge rushed out of the house.

At this moment, Zhang Yu was leading a team of over a hundred men, all armed with light assault rifles, to the border of Illa Town.

The monster group, which was originally confronting a Giant Scorpion, suddenly turned and roared at Zhang Yu and his men before charging straight at them.

Within a split second, the massive group of monsters had demolished the open area of Illa Town with a crushing force.

This small force armed only with light weapons stood no chance against the monster horde.

Zhang Yu and the few surviving soldiers were forced to retreat to the high walls of the military base.

The base walls were fifty meters high, made of alloy and reinforced with steel, sturdy enough to withstand intercontinental ballistic missile attacks.

"Hey, open the door!" someone pleaded as they pounded on the massive gate a few meters away.

No response came and no heavy weapons were deployed to slow the advancing monster horde. The gates were left wide open.

"No point wasting your energy. We’re the abandoned ones." Zhang Yu stated matter-of-factly.

"H-How can that be?" The soldiers went pale and collapsed on the ground.

Despite their relentless advance, the monster horde slowed down as they neared the military base, seemingly cautious of something.

The military base’s command center.

"Colonel, the monsters have slowed down. They seem to be wary of something," a guard reported to Laike.

"Hmm? These beasts are smarter than I thought. Looks like we don’t have enough bait," Laike pondered and then revealed a cruel smile: "I got it. Hang the dried corpse of the Flame Rat from Courtyard 7 on the city wall."

"Um, Colonel, what’s the point of this?" a soldier dared to ask.

Laike shrugged, "No idea. I just want to test my theory."

"What theory?"

Laike looked cold, "Second class soldiers have no right to ask me so many questions, right? Now go and execute the order."

The soldier quickly saluted, his face covered in cold sweat, "Yes, Colonel!"

He quickly left the command center.

Under the walls of the military base, Zhang Yu saw the monsters slow down and breathed a sigh of relief, crouching on the ground.

Looking up at the ferocious monsters, the corners of his mouth curled into a self-mocking smile, "Is it all over?"

"Lieutenant Zhang Yu, are you scared?" a wounded soldier asked.

"Of course I’m scared, and somewhat unwilling to accept it, but there’s also a sense of relief," Zhang Yu back against the wall, replied with a light smile.

"Relief?"

"I’ve made many mistakes in my life, and it cost me everything — family, love...Sometimes I think that maybe death is the escape," he paused before continuing lightly, "Just to be clear, though, I really can’t accept dying in such a pathetic manner in such a place."

"If you can’t accept it, then don’t die!" At that moment, Yang Gang suddenly arrived, riding an Ice Dragon, and landed next to Zhang Yu.

"Yang Gang?" Zhang Yu was clearly surprised.

"There’s no time to explain. Sit on the Ice Dragon, I’ll take you to the base," Yang Gang said.

Zhang Yu gave a faint, bitter smile, "We can’t get in there. There are dozens of cannons waiting for us. Illa Town’s military base has a rule that unauthorized entrants can be shot at directly."

"Damn it! What is the commander of this military base thinking? Why isn’t he letting you in?" Yang Gang was furious.

"Yang Gang, you should just leave. Whether I live or die doesn’t matter. Even if I do die, no one will be saddened by my loss. But you’re different. If you die, Xiaorou would be devastated.."

Smack!

Yang Gang slapped him across the face, "Do you think Miao would not be heartbroken if you died? Do you think Xiaorou would not be upset? Do you think I’d be happy if you died? Zhang Yu, you are not that important, alright! Truth be told, even though we’ve known each other for so long, our relationship is nothing special. But listen here, Zhang Yu. If you die, I will be upset too."

"Gang..." Zhang Yu swept his gaze over an approaching figure. He paused in surprise: "Xiaorou?"

"Er, that woman’s name is Gu Ge, Xiaorou’s twin sister. I’m currently her pretend boyfriend," Yang Gang explained.

"What?"

"There’s no time to explain. Let’s just focus on getting back to the base," Yang Gang scanned the monster horde, continuing, "Fortunately, it seems the monsters are wary of something and have stopped their advance, giving us some time to escape..."

However, at that moment, the previously quiet monster horde flared up once again.

"Hey, up on the wall!"

Yang Gang looked up, and his face paled.

"That corpse, could it be the body of a Flame Rat?!"

Yang Gang and Little Hamster had once buried an immature Flame Rat. However, the Flame Rat corpse hanging on the city wall was significantly larger, with fully developed organs. It was definitely from a mature Flame Rat.

While he was contemplating, the frenzied monster horde began rushing towards the base wall.

"Let’s move!" Yang Gang summoned the Ice Dragon again. The three of them rode it towards the base, and were surprisingly not shot at during their journey.

Just as he felt a slight relief, a tremendous explosion sounded from behind, followed by a series of blasts. The agonizing screams of the monsters mixed in with the sound of the blasts.

The trio turned their heads to witness the scene behind them, speechless.
