Chapter 693: Chapter 696: The Room Charges for these Three Ladies are on My Card_1
The hamster was quick to react. In an instant, it had darted into Yang Gang’s pocket.
Yang Gang was speechless.
"Damn it! I thought this monster rat was invincible, and yet it’s just as afraid of a cat!"
The wild cat was merely a common creature. Seeing that there were people around, it immediately bolted.
Only after ensuring that the wild cat was gone did the hamster reappear from Yang Gang’s pocket. This time, it didn’t approach the Flame Rat, but instead started searching around in the ashes.
In a few minutes, the hamster had dug up seven or eight Beast Crystal Cores from the ash. It kept two for itself, and all the remaining ones were given to Yang Gang.
These belonged to the members of Black Glory who carried them. Their ambush on the Flame Rat had failed, resulting in their deaths and inadvertently benefitting Yang Gang.
Admittedly, the slightly disappointing part was that the quality of these Beast Crystal Cores wasn’t great, based on their color, they were at most fourth grade.
But even then, it was quite a gain.
Normally, to gain eight Beast Crystal Cores, one would need to defeat eight High-Level Beasts.
Given Yang Gang’s current combat power, it’d be somewhat difficult.
Until they departed, the hamster never went for the Monster Crystal Core of the Flame Rat.
Yang Gang, guessing the hamster’s intentions, directly dug a hole and buried the Flame Rat.
After taking care of all that, the group headed back to the ’camp’.
After a brief discussion, they decided to travel overnight.
Despite not having much sleep in these two days, Yang Gang was not tired, thanks to the Beast Crystal Cores replenishing his spiritual power.
Rushing on their way without breaks, by the afternoon, the team reached a location in the desert about 20 to 30 kilometers away from the oasis city of Illa.
Illa was one of the three oasis cities in this vast desert, the other two being Patuo and Gada.
Illa also happened to be the only military base in the western desert of the Land of Fallen. While it was a vital military area not open to outsiders, outside the base was a designated open area for accommodating travelers.
However, this accommodation was not free; military forces charged a hefty fee.
"Brother Yang Gang, are we going to Illa?" While Yang Gang was studying the map in a makeshift tent, Nana suddenly pulled at his sleeve, asking.
Turning to face Nana, seeing her somewhat fearful expression, Yang Gang replied, "Yeah, we’re going to Illa for resupply. We’re running out of food and gas. Besides, it’ll be dark soon. The desert doesn’t offer any geographical protection, so if monsters attacked, we would probably meet a tragic end. Why? What’s up?"
Nana bit her lip, ultimately opting to shake her head saying, "Nothing."
Then she ran out of the tent.
Lucy watched Nana leave, speaking flatly, "To the native inhabitants of the Land of Fallen, Illa is an unforgivable place."
"What’s the story behind that?" Yang Gang asked as he set down the map.
Lucy hesitated slightly, then spoke flatly, "Illa is a large military base. They tolerate the atrocities committed by bandits on the natives and even provide refuge for these criminals. The native residents have launched five attacks on this military fortress, all ending in failure, with many natives killed."
"I think Nana’s mother was killed at Illa," Bai Tong chimed in.
Yang Gang replied, "Then we should..."
But before he could finish, Lucy interrupted him.
"Patuo is still far away, we don’t have enough food and gas to get there. Plus, as you said, sleeping in the desert, without cover, is very dangerous."
"But..."
Lucy glanced at Yang Gang, speaking lightly, "Yang Gang, compassion is a good quality, but it’s not suitable in the Land of Fallen. Here, it’s a survival of the fittest, full of deceit. Being compassionate can cost you your life."
Yang Gang hesitated slightly, before nodding and saying, "Okay, we’ll go to Illa for a resupply."
Then, he suddenly remembered something and added, "Illa probably has strict precautions against Native inhabitants. Will Nana be in danger?"
Lucy shook her head, "The skin of the natives is generally pale due to nuclear radiation pollution, which makes them easy to recognize. However, Nana’s skin has gradually improved and has now returned to normal - they won’t find out."
Bai Tong heaved a sigh, speaking with a note of irony, "It’s really ironic. That place was originally the homeland of the natives, and now they’re using nuclear pollution as an excuse to bar the natives from entering."
No one replied.
After a while.
Yang Gang finally made a decision. "Alright, we’ll take a short rest before we continue towards Illa."
----
Illa Town.
It was the largest oasis city in the western desert of the Land of Fallen. Once a paradise for the natives, it had now turned into an impregnable fortress.
Illa Town was divided into a military zone and an open area.
The military zone was home to an elite unit from the Human Federation, the 35th Armored Division. Comprising of elite soldiers from different countries, they had every kind of weapon except nuclear weapons, even including the incredibly powerful new generation of neutron bullets. These bullets had astonishing destructive power but didn’t produce any nuclear contamination.
The open area, on the other hand, offered services for travelers, with a gas station, hospital, bank, hotel, and even a sightseeing park.
This was one of the few places in the Land of Fallen where you could still spend money.
At the moment, in a hotel in Illa’s open area.
"What? A million US dollars for a night? Are you trying to rob us?" An incredibly stunning Asian beauty glared with her large, starry eyes and protested.
It was Yang Fei.
They had arrived at Illa a few hours earlier than Yang Gang because their journey had been far more smooth.
The hotel receptionist lazily said, "Miss, you’re enjoying the protection of the military. An accommodation in Illa, the safest place in the entire Land of Fallen, surely comes with its cost. If you’re out of money, Beast Crystal Cores can also be used. Second grade Beast Crystal Cores will do."
"Hey, this is a rip off. A second-grade Beast Crystal core is worth millions outside, but here it’s only worth a million US dollars?" rebutted Yang Fei.
"Well, as you said, that’s the price outside, but this is the Land of Fallen - the original source of Beast Crystal Cores. Did you think it’d still be worth that much here?" retorted the receptionist, then snapped impatiently, "If you don’t have the money or Monster Crystal Cores, get out of the way. Can’t you see that there’s a line behind you? Let me see, there’s only one room left. If you don’t want it, make way."
Gong Shuiyan was preparing to bring out one of her first-class Beast Crystal Cores, but Gu Ge stopped her.
She shook her head at Gong Shuiyan, whispering, "Gangzi was right; showing off wealth can easily attract trouble."
"But according to Illa Town’s regulations, if we can’t find a place to stay, we’ll be driven out of town."
Gu Ge sighed, a look of resignation on her face: "Clearly, this is a scheme by the military and the hotel to inflate prices, and we have no choice but to endure it."
At that moment, a voice suddenly spoke up to interrupt, "Um, excuse me, please charge the ladies’ room fees to my card."
