Chapter 156: Chapter 159: Gothic Kingdom_1
Catherine paused, then asked, "Do you know about the Gothic Kingdom?"
"Uh, I learned a little about it in geography class. It’s a small kingdom in Southern Europe, bordering Yiserlie, about the size of half of Hunan Province. It has a population of over ten million, so it’s a small country. Politically, it’s a constitutional monarchy, but the king has more power than the kings of other constitutional monarchies." Yang Fei said.
Catherine smiled, "Good student."
Yang Fei sheepishly returned the smile.
Catherine hesitated slightly, her face growing serious: "Currently, there are two factions within the Gothic Kingdom. One supports the constitutional monarchy, the Royalist Faction; the other is the Republican Faction which supports the republic system and is attempting to abolish the constitutional monarchy. Lately, the struggle between these two factions has intensified, and the Gothic Kingdom is even facing the danger of civil war."
Upon hearing this, Yang Fei couldn’t help but interject: "I believe, regardless of the form of government, if it is beneficial to the people, it should be respected. The stability of the nation is the most important thing. Look at the war-torn Middle East - did they gain the happiness they desired? Whenever a country is in turmoil, the common people always end up suffering."
Catherine smiled, "You’re absolutely correct, but many people fail to understand that."
She paused for a moment, then continued, "Because I often meet with the Republicans, the Royalists consider me a traitor to the royal family and believe I want to overthrow the monarchy along with the Republicans. In truth, I simply want to mediate the dispute between the two parties."
"Princess Catherine, may I share my thoughts?" At this moment, Gu Xiaorou suddenly spoke up.
"Fire away," Catherine nodded.
After a brief pause, Xiaorou said, "There’s no conflict between constitutional monarchy and republicanism. Most constitutional monarchies in the world also adopt republicanism; the king is the head of state but doesn’t hold real power. Control over the administration of the country belongs to the elected government. If the Gothic King, that is, your husband, could give up some of his privileges and grant control over the administration to the elected government, then the Gothic Kingdom would be equivalent to a republic as well. In such a case, those in favor of republicanism would not have any reason to overthrow the monarchy and the Gothic Kingdom could avoid a civil war."
Catherine fell silent. After a while, she sighed, then added, "Ah, it’s not that simple. Support for the republic is just a smokescreen; those people’s true motivation is to dethrone my husband and establish a new king."
Good lord!
A modern version of royal infighting!
"Establish a new king?" Yang Fei was startled: "But from what I know, the current Gothic King doesn’t have any brothers. Who do they want to support?"
Catherine hesitated for a moment before saying, "There is one. My husband’s half-brother from another mother. 20 years ago, a fire broke out in the Gothic royal palace, an Eastern woman died and her young son and their Eastern maid, who was taking care of them, went missing. The woman who died was named Zhang Xin, the old king’s lover, and the missing child was his illegitimate son."
She paused, then continued, "According to the laws of the Gothic royal family, a king can only marry one woman. So, he was unable to give Zhang Xin a title. But the old king loved Zhang Xin the most in his lifetime. After her death, he was constantly depressed and ultimately died of depression five years ago. On his deathbed, he officially bestowed upon Zhang Xin, who had died fifteen years prior, the title of the queen, and declared the missing, whereabouts unknown, presumed living or dead illegitimate child as the prince of the Gothic Kingdom, who has the qualification to inherit the kingdom."
Continuing, Catherine sighed slightly: "On his deathbed, the old king hoped that the potentially alive little prince would return to the Gothic Kingdom so he could pass on the kingdom to him. Unfortunately, until the old king passed away, the missing prince, whose life or death was still unknown, did not appear. As a result, my husband, as the crown prince, ascended the throne successfully."
Yang Fei blinked, muttering to herself, "It feels like watching a drama about palace politics."
Catherine wryly smiled, "Even though it does sound dramatic, it isn’t a play, it’s real life."
She pondered for a moment, then continued, "In recent years, a rumor claiming that ’the royal fire 20 years ago was arson’ has circulated through the kingdom. Some people who are dissatisfied with my husband have rallied together under the façade of supporting the republic to challenge the royal family. They were suppressed by the royal family. Everything was calm for a while. But their actions have increased dramatically recently. If I have guessed correctly, they might’ve found the prince who has been missing for twenty years."
"Wouldn’t the little prince, being of mixed heritage, also have blue eyes?" Yang Fei asked.
Catherine laughed and shook her head: "I’ve heard that the little prince has blond hair like a Westerner, but his facial features and eyes are entirely Eastern. With genes, nothing is certain."
Yang Gang’s mouth twitched: "Yang Fei, are your priorities straight? Understand the situation. The Gothic Kingdom is on the verge of a civil war because of this half-blooded prince. You’re more concerned with whether the little prince has blue eyes, truly flat-chested and brainless..."
Before he could finish, Yang Fei lunged at him, teeth bared, heading straight for Yang Gang’s neck.
Hiss~~
Life is unbearable, my neck is going to be bitten through by these two women, Yang Fei and Gu Xiaorou.
Gu Xiaorou quietly watched the scene, her thoughts unknown.
When Yang Fei released her grip, she huffed, "That’s what you get for saying I have a small chest! What’s so great about a big one? They sag sooner."
Both Catherine and Gu Xiaorou glanced down at their own chests, their faces darkening.
...
After several hours of flight, the helicopter arrived at the Gothic Kingdom.
The Gothic Kingdom is located by the Mediterranean Sea, neighboring the militarily advanced Yiserlie on its right. Yiserlie also happens to be the starting point for Yang Gang’s arms trafficking.
With the Gothic Kingdom being small in size, tourism is its main industry. If a civil war truly broke out and the tourism industry suffered significantly, it would be deadly for the Gothic Kingdom, which relies heavily on this single industry.
As the helicopter flew low over the capital of the Gothic Kingdom, Fes, even though a large-scale civil war hadn’t started yet, Yang Gang could already sense the tension in the city.
Finally, the helicopter landed on the helipad of a castle on a small hill.
As the helicopter door opened, Catherine was the first to step out and a group of maids dressed in servant attire immediately bowed and said, "Welcome back, Princess."
The scene was quite impressive, sending sparkles into Gu Xiaorou’s eyes.
Upon seeing this, Yang Gang laughed, "Don’t be envious, your Zhang Yu isn’t a prince, so you can’t become a princess."
Gu Xiaorou shot Yang Gang a stare, remaining silent.
At this point, a dignified man walked over. Seeing him approach, the crowd immediately parted, making way for him.
"Catherine, are you okay?" The man greeted as he approached.
Catherine scoffed coldly, "Noah, drop the pretense."
Noah was indeed the current king of the Gothic Kingdom.
Catherine then turned towards the helicopter, "Feifei, Xiaorou, Yang Gang, you can come out now."
Yang Gang glanced at the man called Noah, blinking before whispering, "Hey, Xiaorou, don’t you think this Gothic King looks familiar?"
