Chapter 17 Ghost Trial
Chapter 17: Chapter 17 Ghost Trial
Yan Rufeng glanced at the time, it was exactly 10:00 PM.
"It’s time to go!"
Stopping a taxi, Yan Rufeng, who sat in the front passenger seat, handed the driver a cigarette.
The driver accepted the cigarette with a smile and asked, "Where are you heading, young man?"
"Wolong Abyss!"
"What? What are you going there for at this hour?"
"Is there a specific time you have to go to Wolong Abyss?"
"Young man, you must not know, that place is spooky. If you have something to do, go tomorrow."
The driver said so much just to avoid taking Yan Rufeng there.
"One thousand yuan, I’ll pay you now!"
"What, one thousand yuan?"
"Hehe!"
"Young man, I’ll take this job!"
"Brother, didn’t you just say that place is spooky?" Yan Rufeng mocked.
"No matter how spooky, I still need to make money, or else I’ll be eating dirt. Business is tough these days!"
"Alright, I’ll pay you three thousand, wait for me there, I need to come back!"
"Okay, young man, fasten your seatbelt, we’re setting off."
Jade Garden was less than an hour’s drive to Wolong Abyss. On the way, Yan Rufeng used his phone to scan and pay the driver three thousand yuan.
It made the driver very happy.
"Young man, you’re really generous. Call me next time you need a ride."
The driver handed Yan Rufeng a business card.
As they got closer to Wolong Abyss, the driver, who had been playing soft music, switched to DJ music. Yan Rufeng could tell the driver was scared.
"Driver, don’t worry. See that car behind us? Someone will keep you company when we get there!"
The taxi driver glanced through the rearview mirror and indeed saw a business car trailing them.
"Why are they following us?"
Yan Rufeng smiled calmly, "That’s a question you’ll have to ask them later. I’m not sure."
...
Less than a kilometer from Wolong Abyss, the taxi driver refused to drive further and promised to wait there for Yan Rufeng.
Knowing the driver was scared, Yan Rufeng had no choice but to walk.
As soon as his silhouette disappeared, the business car trailing them stopped beside the taxi.
Six people got out of the business car: five men and one woman. They opened the taxi door, and one of them showed his badge.
"Hello, driver, I’m Police Officer Xiao Wu from the Zhongzhou Investigation Team. Please cooperate with our investigation."
After questioning the taxi driver, Officer Xiao Wu saluted the leading female officer, "Captain Wen, there’s only one target heading towards Wolong Abyss. Awaiting your orders for the next step!"
"Driver Xiao Fang, remain on standby. Everyone else, follow me into Wolong Abyss!"
"Yes, ma’am!"
Twenty minutes later, Wen Tong arrived at the scene with four officers.
Using powerful flashlights, they scoured the area but found no sign of Yan Rufeng.
At that moment, a piercing voice shouted, "Who are you people? Coming here late at night, are you tired of living?"
Wen Tong noticed the voice belonged to a fat man.
"Who are you, and what are you doing here at this hour?"
"Who I am doesn’t matter. What’s important is that you all are about to cease being human!"
"Insolent! How dare you speak to our captain this way. Arrest him!"
One officer took out handcuffs and approached the fat man.
"Haha..."
The fat man laughed wickedly, "I hated you cops the most when I was alive. Now, you’ve come straight to me. Brothers, come out, it’s time for action."
As soon as he finished speaking, seven or eight burly tattooed men appeared out of nowhere.
"Brothers, let’s take them down. From now on, Wolong Abyss will belong to us. Go!"
Wen Tong’s group panicked, one timid officer asked fearfully, "Captain Wen, he said he hated us when he was alive. Does that mean he’s not human now?"
"Xiao Ming, stop talking nonsense. Everyone, be alert. Draw your guns!"
Just as the two groups were about to clash, another voice shouted sharply, "Hey, you new fat guys, don’t you know the rules?"
The fat man’s expression changed drastically upon hearing this. He shouted angrily at the newcomer, "Damn it, a mere contractor dares to threaten me? I’ll make you want to die again!"
"You fool, don’t mess with me. Brothers, get them out of Wolong Abyss!"
Upon the contractor’s command, a dozen young men wielding steel pipes rushed over.
"Stop!"
Wen Tong shouted, "Do you have any respect for the law? Threatening violence in front of me? Arrest them all and take them back for questioning!"
"Haha..."
"If you didn’t speak just now, I almost forgot. Police Officer Wen, after we take care of these fat guys, you’re next."
One of the contractors tossed his hard hat to the ground and charged at the fat man.
"Bang bang bang!"
After three gunshots, the contractor stopped in his tracks.
Wen Tong straightened her back and held her head high, "Why did you stop? Want to continue? Anyone who doesn’t want to die, kneel with hands on their heads."
"Hehe!"
The contractor sneered coldly, "Fatty, I won’t trouble you this time. Just watch how I’ll handle these cops!"
Wen Tong and her team were taken aback. They had thought the warning shots would make the criminals surrender, but the criminals threatened to eliminate them instead.
"Everyone, draw your guns. If he takes one step forward, shoot to kill!" Wen Tong was truly enraged; she had never been threatened like this before.
But Wen Tong did not know that neither the fat man nor the contractor and his men were human; they were ghosts.
The contractor moved, and gunshots erupted. To Wen Tong’s surprise, the contractor did not fall as she expected.
"This is insane. Are they really ghosts?"
Of course, in modern society, no ghosts exist. With the End of Dharma, Earth’s spiritual energy is too weak for any ghost to survive.
Wolong Abyss is an exception, though.
The four officers with Wen Tong were utterly petrified.
"Ghosts!"
"Ghosts!"
The contractor saw someone trying to run.
"Haha..."
"How can I let you escape? I need your essence. As long as I’m here, none of you will leave Wolong Abyss!"
"Who do you think you are? A mere ghost dares to make trouble in my domain. Bow before me or face the consequences!"
A streak of golden light flashed through the air, and Yan Rufeng appeared in front of the contractor.
However, the ones most terrified were the fat man and his group; they were no longer human but ghosts.
During the day, they had died under Yan Rufeng’s Qi Sword.
"Spare us, Immortal! We don’t want to die again."
Wen Tong could not believe her eyes. The once-arrogant fat men were now all kneeling before Yan Rufeng, begging for mercy, "Is he a devil?"
"Hehe!"
The contractor laughed wickedly, "Boy, boasting in front of me? After I drain your essence, let’s see how you strut around!"
"You talk too much."
Yan Rufeng threw a Yellow Talisman at the contractor. The talisman grew in the wind, emitting a golden light, enveloping the contractor and his men.
Under the pressure of the Mystic Light Righteous Energy, the ghosts could hardly breathe and wailed in anguish, begging for mercy.
"Spare us, Immortal!"
"Spare us, Immortal!"
"..."
Seeing this, Wen Tong was too stunned to speak.
"Is he a Taoist? Using talismans to fight ghosts with golden light. These scenes only appear in TV shows and novels. How is this happening in real life?"
"Yan Rufeng, who are you?"
"Pretty Police Chief, haven’t you been investigating who I am?"
Wen Tong raised her head to look at Yan Rufeng.
"Yes, I have. Recently, two strange cases in Zhongzhou are connected to you. I can’t help but suspect you."
"Hehe."
"Do you want to know why?"
"Why? Would a suspect tell me?"
"Pretty Police Chief, if you’re not afraid of ghosts, you can ask them!"
Yan Rufeng pointed at the ghosts subdued by the golden light.
Clearly, Wen Tong was less scared of these little ghosts this time. She strutted to the edge of the golden light and started questioning them one by one.
Though they were ghosts, they were not naive. When Wen Tong asked about Brother Leopard’s death, the ghosts took full responsibility, detailing the process. Despite being ghosts, they were well-informed and knew about Brother Leopard’s case.
During questioning, Wen Tong unexpectedly encountered the ghost of Xiaxia’s ex-boyfriend. When asked how he died, he dared not tell the truth and claimed he accidentally fell off a cliff.
Wen Tong was at a loss. The person involved said so; if she pursued Yan Rufeng further, it would be meaningless.
"Pretty Police Chief, can I clear my name now?"
Wen Tong did not answer.
"Yan Rufeng, how do you plan to deal with them? Though they’re ghosts, they should still face punishment for breaking the law."
As Wen Tong said this, the ghosts trembled, afraid that Yan Rufeng would snap his fingers and obliterate them.
"I’m not a cop. Even if I were, I couldn’t govern ghosts. That’s King Yama’s job."
Hearing this, the ghosts sighed in relief, thinking they would survive the night.
"You..."
"What about me? You can’t interfere with what I, Yan Rufeng, do. Keep talking, and I’ll let them loose to wreak havoc on the Human World."
"Quite the Yan Rufeng, a little Taoist dares speak to me this way. Just wait. Squad, retreat!"
Wen Tong left Wolong Abyss with her still-frightened four officers.
