“No,” Li Dazhi spread his hands, “isn’t this just the history of the Desolate Era?”
Hongjun asked again: “Then have you given thought as to why the history of the Desolate Era unfolded as it did?”
Li Dazhi fell into contemplation.
Suddenly, Hongjun said: “Don’t start with the contradiction of conflict and unity to me, I’ve heard you fool too many people with that.”
“But that is the core of it.”
Li Dazhi said with conviction:
“I feel, with the retreat of the dragons and phoenixes, some of the Primordial Beings began to reproduce, which is actually the redistribution of the world’s resources behind the scenes.
“The gradual demise of the Primordial Beings, and the swift rise of the clans they left behind is also part of this process.
“The Hundred Clans were glorious and established the Ancient Heavenly Court, which represented the interests of most of the Hundred Clans, it’s just that later, internal strife arose within the Hundred Clans, and the interests of Emperor Jun and East Emperor Taiyi began to diverge from the rest of the clans.
“Much like emperors and the Senior Official class; initially, when a royal court is established, there are common interests, then the imperial family proliferates and enjoys privileges above the Senior Official class, resulting in diverging interests.
“Even the great war between the Human Race and the Hundred Clans today is a repetition of this process.
“This is the contradiction driven by resources.”
Hongjun smiled and said: “Then why did the dragons and phoenixes wage great wars, and why did the Primordial Beings give birth to the Hundred Clans?”
He waved his sleeves and several scrolls lined up in front of him, each linked to a slightly different Chaos Sea, in total dozens of them.
Then, these scrolls began to spout ‘ink’ as figures similar yet slightly different to Pangu formed, opening up Heaven and Earth, and the developments on the numerous scrolls were quite similar, yet subtly different.
What was similar was this grand trend;
What differed were the individual entities.
Li Dazhi watched, completely bewildered: “What is this, senior?”
Hongjun said: “These represent the Tangible Realms I have observed thus far, which is to say, the Vast Wilderness Heaven and Earth.
In the unseen grand scheme of things, they do not interfere with the Heaven and Earth where we reside.
There are even more realms I cannot observe.”
“Really?”
“Does it feel absurd?”
Hongjun sighed lightly:
“I also find it absurd.
Pangu’s creation was a constant, as well as the act of creating Heaven and Earth.
It all seems predetermined within the Chaos Sea.
“A single strand of the Chaos Sea’s collapse, and compared to other worlds, our world will lack a mountain range.
“Just like our friend Pangu, he could decide the direction of his axe’s swing, but the outcome was always the birth of worlds quite similar but slightly different, and his eventual fall.
“It’s as if he is being driven by The Great Dao, because this scroll you see is a convergence of the three thousand Great Dao.
“But is The Great Dao sentient?
“That’s impossible.
The Great Dao is but a set of rules.
“Yet, reality is before us.
“The Qi Cultivators keep cultivating, striving to master The Great Dao, setting their own path upon becoming immortals, achieving everlasting life as Golden Immortals through their own Dao, and there is nothing unusual about this process.
But Golden Immortals strive to advance to Taiyi, and in order to perfect the Taiyi Realm, they have to gradually give up parts of their own Dao that are uniquely theirs, instead trying to closely align with The Great Dao they began with.
“What is Da Luo?
“Da Luo is the master of a Great Dao.
For example, the Path of Clouds—if your cultivation of the Path of Clouds leads to a Daluo Golden Immortal, then this Daluo Golden Immortal could, in turn, influence the Path of Clouds.
“Isn’t this… The Great Dao endowing itself with sentience?
“A long time ago, a Daoist friend always liked to say that I was the adversary.
I am different from the Hongjuns of other Primordial Worlds.
I have not achieved Hedao; I simply did things that were positively beneficial for this world and then, look at this world.”
Li Dazhi opened his mouth.
His head was buzzing; Hongjun’s words contained too much information.
For the time being, he ignored the parts about Heaven and Earth that he didn’t quite understand.
Hongjun mentioned ‘a Daoist friend’, who called Hongjun an adversary?
Was Hongjun’s choice not to achieve Hedao meant to prove to this ‘Daoist friend’ that the world would still develop in this direction even without his intervention?
What does this mean?
Who is that ‘Daoist friend’?
“That… um…”
Hongjun let out a soft sigh and motioned for Li Dazhi to carefully observe the dozens of scrolls laid out between them.
He continued: “Now look and see what’s the destiny of these Primordial Worlds.”
Li Dazhi focused his gaze; the swarming ‘ink’ had reached the end of the scrolls.
One by one the worlds dimmed, returning to stillness, from which several points of light emerged.
Some of these lights resembled the old Daoist in front of him, Hongjun; others were old sages sitting atop the Tai Chi Diagram; some were three Daoists of varying ages, and some were peculiar and strange beings.
As these points of light faded, the worlds seemed to continue evolving, collapsing into the expansive emptiness, sinking into the Chaos Sea, entering another form of the Chaos Sea.
All the worlds disappeared in this manner.
But two worlds remained; one seemed as if it could exist forever, while another was suddenly enveloped in golden light, transforming into a giant that tore open the sky and earth, vanishing from sight.
“Look,” Hongjun pointed to the disappeared world, “this is the only exception I’ve observed, where the union with The Great Dao led the world to transcendence.
Countless beings perished during this process, but the world and the surviving beings avoided obliteration.”
Li Dazhi: Is this guy whitewashing the Hongjuns of the other Primordial Worlds?
With a satisfied smile, Hongjun watched the seemingly everlasting world which, after several shudders, also quickly faded away.
It was probably much like mortals experiencing birth, aging, illness, and death.
The same was true for Heaven and Earth.
Hongjun looked at Li Dazhi, raising an eyebrow and exhaling softly:
“Indeed, preaching The Dao is truly refreshing for the body and mind.
Have you now understood the principle of transcendence?”
