Chapter 165: Mystery of the Spiky Witch Hat

It was a normal evening. Aside from the fact that Remi was out, dealing with his clients as the witch - it was the new moon, so it was all according to his usual schedule - there was nothing out of the ordinary. Vivi was sitting in the booster seat and playing with the activity tray, while Felix was busying himself around the kitchen, kneading dough, and glancing at the notes pasted on the wall in front of him...

When all of a sudden, a cold gust of wind blew on the back of his neck.

Felix paused for a moment. He wasn’t alarmed, though. The wind carried the scent of the winter air mixed with a hint of jasmine. Although there was something different about this scent, he assumed that Remi must have come back. He left the dough on the counter and stepped out of the kitchen, his hands still covered in flour...

The moment he saw the person standing at the door, he couldn’t help but pause.

It wasn’t Remi. It was his mother, Agnes.

Felix stared at the woman in silence for a moment, confused. The door should have been locked, but she still got in soundlessly...

Well, she was a witch, after all.

But that wasn’t the only odd thing. What confused Felix even more was the scent. For some reason, Agnes had faked Remi’s scent, down to his jasmine pheromones. It wasn’t a perfect imitation - Felix’s sensitive nose still picked up on the subtle differences - but that was enough to fool him for a moment, and make him lower his guard. No other person would have been able to imitate the scent like that, after all.

It made Felix a bit uneasy, but he still put a smile on his face. It was just Remi’s mother, and while she was powerful and dangerous, he didn’t feel any hostility from her.

Not to mention, if she wanted to hurt Felix, she could do it before he could even blink, and no amount of caution would help.

"Auntie, are you looking for Remi?" he asked politely. He called him ’Remi’, since he still didn’t know the fox’s real name... But Agnes had never corrected him, not now, and not in the past.

Could it be that it truly was his name?

Agnes gave him a long look, before shaking her head. "No, I’m here for you."

She seemed oddly serious. So serious that Felix couldn’t help but feel nervous.

"Ah, then... How can I help you?"

Agnes didn’t answer. She just walked over to Felix, stopping right in front of him. Although Felix wasn’t short for an Omega, she was still slightly taller than him. Only an inch or so, maybe two at most, but still. When she was close, to meet Felix’s eyes, she had to slightly lower her gaze. She grabbed Felix’s chin, lifting his head, then turning his face left and right, as if she wanted to examine him from every angle. Her fingers were ice cold from the snowy weather, while her green eyes were intense. The more she looked, the more serious she became, but she still didn’t say anything...

Just as Felix was about to open his mouth to say anything, she suddenly spoke, "So this is why he refused to reveal your face!"

...Huh?

Felix was momentarily stunned. Was she talking about how, throughout her whole visit the last time, Felix had the spiky witch hat stuck on his head? Did she discover something? Actually, Felix was curious about it as well, but he still had no clue at all!

However, curious as he was, he still didn’t ask, choosing to remain silent.

The reason was simple. If he asked, he would reveal to Agnes that he had no idea what was going on. And would Agnes tell him the truth then? Felix highly doubted it! If Agnes realized that Remi was keeping things secret from Felix, then she most likely wouldn’t intervene. She was Remi’s mother, after all. She might have been kind to Felix, but that was because she was supportive of her son...

On the other hand, if Felix pretended that he knew everything and went along with Agnes, then even if she wouldn’t give him clear answers, he might at least get some new clues. Whether it would work, he didn’t know, but it was at least worth a shot!

So, he schooled his expression, and asked as calmly as he could, "Now that you know, what are you going to do?"

Agnes let out a soft chuckle and took a step back, finally letting go of his chin. "There’s no need to feel alarmed. Since Remi likes you, naturally I won’t hurt you..."

Felix’s eyes widened.

So if it wasn’t for Remi, Agnes would have hurt him? But why?

Agnes noticed his change in expression, but she didn’t think much of it. After all, it was understandable for him to be a little startled after what she had said. But she thought it wasn’t that big of a deal. She just waved her hand to release a soothing mist to calm Felix’s nerves, before letting out a sigh. "It is what it is. Like I said, I’m not so cruel as to hurt my son-in-law, even if it’s for my son’s sake."

Now Felix was even more confused. Why would hurting him benefit Remi?

He didn’t ask anything, though, just stared at Agnes vigilantly.

Meanwhile, Agnes grabbed one of the apples from the basket, and made herself comfortable.

By sitting on the kitchen counter.

"I’ve said that I won’t hurt you," she said, biting the apple. "But that only applies to you. Surely, you understand the situation?"

...No, Felix didn’t. But he just lowered his head, staying silent. He felt more and more uneasy. When Agnes had just spoken, he had almost glanced at Vivi instinctively, but had stopped himself at the last moment. He didn’t want to bring any attention to his daughter. Agnes had just said that it was just him that she wouldn’t hurt. Then Vivi...

Luckily, Agnes wasn’t paying any attention to the pup. She just asked casually, "Do you have any siblings?"

"...I don’t."

Agnes clicked her tongue with disappointment. "Aunts, uncles, cousins? Any relative, no matter how distant..."

"Actually, it doesn’t have to be a relative. You might not know everyone you had a common ancestor with..." she added before Felix could even answer. "As long as they have the same golden eyes as you, they will be a match..."
