Chapter 93: Sophia in danger (3)
"Would you die for me too?" Adam asked his voice a low challenge.
The laughter in the room died instantly. The mercenaries stared at him their amusement replaced by a stunned confusion. Johnny’s smile faltered. What was this kid doing? What kind of game was he playing?
But Sophia was not confused. She was not surprised. She smiled a small sad smile. "Of course," she said her voice clear and unwavering.
It was the only answer Adam needed to hear. He summoned a pistol from his inventory. It materialized in his hand its black surface gleaming in the dim light. It had a silencer attached to the barrel.
He aimed the pistol at Sophia.
He smiled at her a look of infinite sadness and unwavering resolve. "I’ll save you," he whispered a promise that only she could understand.
He squeezed the trigger.
The silenced pistol coughed once. A single bullet crossed the space between them. It struck Sophia in the head passing straight through her skull.
Sophia knew what was coming. She understood Adam’s strange words his final confession. But the men in the room were completely blindsided. Their faces shifted from amused surprise to shocked horror as Adam pulled out his pistol and fired.
They had no time to react. They could only watch as Sophia’s body crumpled to the floor lifeless.
The smile on Adam’s face vanished replaced by a look of cold unadulterated fury. "Now we begin," he whispered his voice a low dangerous growl.
He summoned a second pistol from his inventory. He now held a gun in each hand. And then he disappeared.
His stats were all over one hundred. His speed was supernatural. He moved so fast he was nothing more than a blur a flicker of motion at the edge of their vision.
He appeared in front of the man who had held the gun to Sophia’s head. He shoved his pistol into the man’s face before he could even register what was happening. He pulled the trigger. The bullet tore through the man’s skull and he fell backwards his body a lifeless rag doll.
Adam vanished again.
Johnny stared in stunned disbelief. He realized what Adam had done. He had neutralized his only weakness. He had eliminated the hostage. He had taken away their only leverage.
A cold fear gripped him a fear he had not felt in a very long time. He finally understood why the entire underworld was after this boy. He was not just a target.
He was a monster.
One moment he was confessing his love to the girl. The next he was killing her with his own hands. Johnny’s hands started to tremble. He’s insane, he thought his mind reeling.
"Kill this psychopath!" he screamed his voice raw with terror. "Kill him now or he’ll kill us all!"
Adam appeared behind Johnny in a flash. The man who had led him to the factory was still standing there his face a mask of confusion. Adam shot him in the head without a word.
Johnny heard the soft pop of the silenced pistol behind him. He heard the heavy thud of his subordinate’s body hitting the floor.
He spun around his eyes wide with terror. But Adam was already gone a phantom in the chaotic factory.
Adam was a whirlwind of motion. He ran zig-zagging through the maze of machinery. He was a difficult target to hit. His Iron Skin skill would protect him from most of their bullets but he did not want to take any chances.
Johnny’s scream finally broke the spell of their shock. The remaining mercenaries scrambled for their weapons.
They pulled out automatic rifles heavy machine guns weapons that were meant for a war not for a simple assassination.
The factory erupted in a storm of gunfire. Bullets ricocheted off the metal machinery creating a deafening cacophony of noise. Adam had thought he could take them all out.
But as the hail of bullets rained down on him he realized he had made a mistake. Two high-caliber rounds slammed into him.
They did not penetrate his Iron Skin but the force of the impact staggered him. He understood then that Johnny had not underestimated him completely. He had come prepared for the worst-case scenario.
Adam knew he could not attack Johnny directly. Three of his men were positioned in strategic locations their automatic rifles trained on the area around their boss.
Their sole purpose was to neutralize any threat that got too close. Those automatic rifles were Adam’s biggest concern.
He continued to move weaving through the chaos. He returned fire with his own pistols his shots precise and deadly. One by one he picked off the mercenaries who were not part of Johnny’s personal guard. He was thinning the herd preparing for the final confrontation.
But there were too many of them. Adam was genuinely surprised. He had thought Johnny was arrogant but he had not realized the extent of his preparations. An army of mercenaries swarmed the factory floor.
More men poured in from large bay doors on all sides of the building cutting off any chance of escape.
Adam quickly estimated there were now over two hundred men inside the factory and their numbers were still growing. He was completely surrounded.
The hailstorm of bullets intensified. It was a relentless downpour of lead that filled the air with a deafening roar. Three more high-caliber rounds found their mark.
Two of them ricocheted off his Iron Skin leaving stinging welts. But the third one dug into the flesh of his shoulder a painful reminder of his own mortality. He was not invincible.
Johnny was not a front-line fighter. He was a commander. He saw his men faltering and knew he had to retreat to a safer position. He turned and ran scrambling up a rickety metal staircase.
It led to a narrow catwalk that encircled the entire upper level of the factory.
His elite personal guards were already positioned up there their automatic rifles trained on the chaos below. From this vantage point he could direct the battle without putting himself in direct danger.
