I Want to Die, But I Am Immortal
Chapter 83: Revenge (7)

Chapter 83: Revenge (7)

Then more gunshots struck him. They struck him in the chest, arms, and legs. Each gunshot felt like a powerful punch. He felt the bullets strike his skin, then cease. Some of the bullets got lodged in his skin. But they did not delve deeply. They did not injure him terribly.

He was bleeding from multiple tiny incisions. But he was alive. He was still standing.

He was really astonished. He would survived numerous rifle bullets. He returned to his senses. He stared at the final few soldiers. Their expressions were full of shock.

They would watched their bullets ricochet off his skin. They had witnessed something that was not possible. He noticed a fresh fear in their eyes. It was the terror of something that could not be destroyed.

Adam came back to his senses with a vengeance. The shock of his own invulnerability was replaced by a cold predatory focus. He charged.

The remaining mercenaries stared in disbelief as the boy they had just shot multiple times ran at them. Their fear turned to panic. They fumbled with their rifles trying to reload trying to aim. It was too late.

Adam was a whirlwind of motion. His knife was a blur. He moved through them with a brutal efficiency a force of nature that could not be stopped. He ducked under a wild swing of a rifle butt. He sidestepped a clumsy bayonet thrust. His knife found its mark again and again. A slash. A thrust. A parry. One by one they fell until he was the only one left standing.

The club was finally silent. The only sound was Adam’s own heavy breathing. He was exhausted. He had been running and fighting continuously for several minutes. Even with his enhanced stamina he was feeling the strain.

He took a deep breath trying to calm his racing heart. He turned and looked across the room. Eric and Joseph were still on the floor where he had left them. They were staring at him their faces a mixture of awe and terror.

Seeing Adam’s gaze fall upon them Eric scrambled to his feet. His face was a mask of desperation.

"Adam it wasn’t me!" he cried his voice cracking. "I told him not to do it! I told him you were our friend! But he wouldn’t listen! He just wanted the money!"

Joseph stared at Eric in stunned disbelief. He could not believe that Eric was throwing him under the bus so quickly so completely. He scrambled to his feet as well his fear overriding his shock.

"He’s lying!" Joseph shouted his voice trembling. "He was the one who convinced me! I didn’t want to do it!"

Adam did not react to their pathetic attempts to blame each other. Their words were meaningless to him. He started to walk towards them slowly his expression cold and unreadable.

Seeing that their words were having no effect Eric and Joseph started to back away. Their desperation turned to pleading.

"Adam please forgive us man," Eric sobbed tears streaming down his face. "You’re our only friend. You can’t kill us. Think about our parents. You know them. Think about what this would do to them."

They were saying anything they could think of anything that might save them from the monster their friend had become.

The mention of their parents made Adam stop. He looked at them and a slow cruel smile spread across his face. He started to laugh. It was not a happy sound. It was a cold empty laugh that echoed in the silent club.

The sound terrified Eric and Joseph more than anything else. This was not the Adam they knew. The boy they had grown up with was gone. This was someone else entirely. The realization sent a fresh wave of terror through them.

"Did you two think about me when you did this?" Adam asked his voice low and dangerous.

"We thought they just wanted to get money from you!" Eric blurted out. "We didn’t know they were going to kill you! We swear!"

The excuse only fueled Adam’s rage. "I don’t care," he said his voice flat and cold. "You both betrayed me. And I will make you both pay for it."

He spun the knife in his hand the blade catching the light. He started to walk towards them again.

Eric and Joseph were out of options. They were out of excuses. They were about to die.

"We needed help!" Joseph screamed a last desperate cry. "You already had so many problems! We couldn’t ask you!"

The words made Adam stop. He froze his knife held ready. He looked at them a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes.

"Help?" he asked his voice quiet

. "What kind of help?"

Joseph looked at Eric. Eric looked at the floor. He took a shaky breath. "Anastasia has cancer," he said his voice barely a whisper.

The name hit Adam like a physical blow. Anastasia. He knew her. She was in his class. She was Joseph’s sister. And she was his friend. He was as close to her as he had been to Eric and Joseph. The news stunned him leaving him speechless.

The name Anastasia hung in the air a single word that changed nothing. Adam remembered the previous loop. He remembered the moment Eric and Joseph received their payment from JokerX. They had not mentioned Anastasia then.

They had not said a word about her illness. Their final words to him echoed in his mind a cold bitter memory. "Goodbye our old friend."

A chilling smile touched Adam’s lips. He looked at Joseph who was staring at him his face a mask of desperate hope. He thought he had found a weakness an emotional lever to save himself. He was wrong.
