I Want to Die, But I Am Immortal -
Chapter 60: Interrogation
Chapter 60: Interrogation
The words Adam spoke were quiet but they landed in the ruined kitchen with the force of a bomb. "You’re right. They’re all dead."
The world turned on its center, and Assassin Four felt it. What he was hearing was not accepted by his mind. Joining this team had made him extremely proud. They were more than a gang of murderers.
They were famous.
He recalled hearing the stories in smoky back rooms when he was first starting out, in whispered tones. He recalled the actor’s story.
At a live awards show, the target was one of the most well-known men in the world, surrounded by security. The job was supposed to be impossible. However, his group had succeeded.
Until the target died on stage, they had entered and exited without anyone noticing.
It was a flawless mission, an absolute success.
His heroes were these men. They were the greatest in the business. In the hopes that he would one day be good enough to catch their attention, Assassin Four had spent years advancing through the ranks of menial jobs.
The proudest moment of his life occurred a few months ago when they finally recruited him. He was the new guy, the rookie. He heard what they had to say. He observed their movements and thought processes. They were craft deities.
And this boy this child was telling him he had killed them. All three of them. Assassin Four looked at Adam his mind reeling. He was no longer seeing a high school kid. He was seeing something ancient and terrible something that should not exist. He was seeing a demon wearing a human face.
"That’s impossible" he breathed. The words came out as a weak broken whisper. It was the last prayer of a man whose faith had just been shattered.
"He captured us alive."
The voice of Assassin Five cut through the fog of fear in Four’s mind. It was sharp calm and logical. Four turned to look at his partner. Five was not looking at Adam with terror. He was looking at him with an unsettling curiosity.
"That means he wants information" Five finished.
Adam was surprised by the man’s quick thinking. This one was different. He was smart. He understood the situation. Adam decided to be direct.
"I won’t lie to you" Adam said his voice cold and even. "Give me everything you know. If you do I will give you a quick death. If you don’t I will make it last. I will hurt you until I get tired of the sound of your screams."
It was a complete bluff. Adam had no intention of torturing them. He didn’t have the stomach for it. More importantly he didn’t have the time. The school day was starting soon. The world outside this bloody kitchen was still turning. But they didn’t know that. They only knew the cold promise in his voice.
The threat sent a new wave of terror through Assassin Four. But Assassin Five did something completely unexpected. He started to laugh. It was not a loud crazy laugh. It was a soft chuckle a sound of genuine amusement.
Four stared at his partner in complete disbelief. He thought the man had finally broken. How could anyone laugh right now? They were tied to chairs at the mercy of a monster who had just killed their team. They were about to be tortured and killed. There was nothing funny about it.
Assassin Five’s laughter died down. He looked at Adam and a small smile remained on his lips. "I already knew we weren’t walking out of here alive" he said his voice calm. "That’s the business we’re in. It’s a simple game. You win and you get to see another sunrise. You lose and the game ends. There are no second chances."
He spoke like a teacher explaining a simple lesson. He was not afraid. He had accepted the risks of his job a long time ago. Death was not a terrifying unknown. It was just the cost of losing.
Adam watched him listening quietly. He didn’t really care if the man talked. His plan was to put a single bullet in each of their heads and move on. The torture threat was just a tool something he had seen in movies. It was a low-effort way to see if he could get them to break.
The clock was ticking inside his head. He needed to prepare for school. Although it sounded crazy, it was his reality. In addition to seeing Sophia to make sure she was alright, he had to go to class.
He had to act like a typical student. It was very dangerous to stay in this house for an extended period of time. He was aware of his adversaries’ tenacity.
There may be more coming soon. His chances of being found and killed increased with each second he spent here.
He was a young man with an extremely hectic schedule. Killing assassins, disposing of bodies, and then attempting to pass a math test were all part of the schedule.
He had to walk a rope over a flames place in his life.
He gave the two men a look. One was a terrified, broken mess. The other was a composed professional who had come to terms with his own demise. It would be good to have the information.
Knowing who was responsible for all of this would be very beneficial. However, his immediate survival did not require it. The most crucial thing was to continue moving.
Down here, he could not get bogged down. This was merely a side-quest interrogation. He had a primary task to accomplish. The only goal was to survive until tomorrow. Soon the school bell would ring. And he was determined to be present to hear it.
