Chapter 45: New Strategy

Chapter 45: New Strategy

Anastasia stared at him. Her eyes were wide. They held a mixture of confusion and fear. Before she could scream before she could even process the sight of a strange boy standing in her doorway in the early morning light Adam grabbed her hand.

He pulled her out of her room. His movements were swift urgent.

Anastasia was very shocked to see this, she was now getting very scared because if any person wakes up early in the morning and sees another person in her house and that person forcibly catches her and takes her somewhere, then it is scary.

He moved towards Sophia’s door. "My name is Adam," he said. His voice was a low intense whisper. "I’m your older sister’s friend. We’re in a very serious situation right now. I need your help. You have to keep Sophia in this room until I come back. Don’t let her out no matter what you hear. Do you understand?"

Anastasia was completely bewildered. A thousand questions flooded her mind. Who was he? Why was he here? What situation was he talking about? But when she heard that he was her sister’s friend a wave of genuine happiness washed over her.

It was a strange reaction in the middle of such a tense moment. She had always worried about Sophia. She knew her older sister was lonely. She knew her sister did not have any friends.

She saw the other girls at school with their groups their laughter echoing in the halls. But Sophia was always alone. The thought that Sophia finally had a friend a boy no less filled her with a strange sense of relief.

It overshadowed her own fear. She was still shocked to find a boy outside her room so early in the morning. But the idea of her sister having a friend was a powerful comfort.

Adam did not give her time to ask any of her questions. He did not have a moment to spare. He pushed her gently but firmly into Sophia’s room. He closed the door. He locked it from the outside. The click of the lock was a small definitive sound in the quiet hallway.

He then turned and ran. He grabbed the small paring knife from the hallway table its handle cool against his skin. He sprinted towards the stairs. He did not take them one by one.

That was too slow. He leaped from the top of the staircase his body a blur of motion. His enhanced stats made the feat effortless. He landed on the ground floor below with a soft thud a sound absorbed by the old wooden floorboards.

The jump made a slight noise. But he did not have time to worry about that now. He had to be fast. Every second was precious.

He reached the end of the corridor. The three masked men were just entering the shop. He saw Sophia’s mother. Her face was pale. It was a mask of confusion and a dawning fear.

She was trying to talk to them to understand who they were what they wanted. He saw the man at the back. The man was slowly raising his silenced pistol. The movement was calm professional deadly.

Sophia’s mother saw the gun too. The color drained from her face completely. Her eyes widened in terror. A small gasp escaped her lips.

But this time Adam was ready.

He burst from the corridor a whirlwind of motion. He wrapped his arm around Sophia’s mother’s waist his grip firm and unyielding. He pulled her back from the counter. He threw them both to the side into the other corridor the one that led to the kitchen. He rolled with her on the floor his body shielding hers. Their momentum carried them out of the line of fire. They came to a stop behind the jutting corner of the wall.

The assassin fired. The bullet missed. It struck the wall where Sophia’s mother had been standing just a fraction of a second ago. A small puff of plaster dust was the only evidence of the near-fatal shot.

Sophia’s mother was in a state of complete shock. She was stunned by the sudden appearance of the three men. She was stunned by the sight of the gun. She was stunned by the fact that she had just narrowly escaped death.

She looked at the masked boy who had just saved her life. Her eyes were wide with a mixture of fear and gratitude. "Who are you?" she asked. Her voice was a trembling whisper.

"I’m Sophia’s friend," Adam replied. His voice was low and urgent a harsh rasp. "I’ll explain everything later. Right now we have to move."

Sophia’s mother still reeling from the shock nodded. She had seen the gun. She had seen the cold intent in the eyes of the three strange men. She knew they were in danger. She did not know who this boy was. But he had just saved her life. She trusted him.

Adam pulled the small paring knife from his waistband. Without even looking he threw it out from behind the corner into the shop. His aim was not to hit anyone. His aim was to create a diversion. He just needed to buy some time.

The assassins saw the flash of silver as the knife flew through the air. It clattered loudly against a metal shelf on the far side of the shop. They instinctively took a step back their professional training kicking in.

Their focus was momentarily broken. It was a momentary hesitation a fraction of a second. But it was all the time Adam needed.
