Chapter 105: Big Game (2)
Chapter 105: Big Game (2)
Adam walked a few blocks from the factory and turned into a dark deserted alley. Sophia was waiting for him just as he had told her to her small figure huddled against the cold brick wall.
He took her hand and they walked away from the chaos their footsteps echoing in the silent night.
As soon as he had left the factory he had used his new ’Track’ skill. He had placed a tracker on Johnny a small invisible mark that would allow him to see his live location at all times.
He understands that obtaining his adversary’s live location would be extremely advantageous, as it would allow him to track them without delay. Even if they devise a new plan, he can launch a surprise attack to counter their moves.
He had also placed one on the police commissioner.
Adam understands that he must obtain the police commissioner’s location soon enough, so he uses his skills on him before any situation arises that could lead to fatal consequences.
He had a feeling it might come in handy in the future. And now as he held Sophia’s hand he placed a third tracker on her. He would always know where she was no matter what happened.
He would never let her be taken from him again.
Sophia was still in shock. The horrific scene from the factory kept replaying in her mind a relentless loop of violence and death. She had never seen Adam so angry so violent.
The boy she knew the quiet gentle was gone replaced by a cold ruthless killer.
"You made your choice," Adam said as they walked his voice a low monotone devoid of any emotion. "Now you have to live with it. I warned you to stay away from me. But it’s too late for that now. I won’t let you go even if you want to leave me."
Adam had warned Sophia previously, but she chose to ignore him. Now, he is determined to stay by her side, regardless of her desire to distance herself from him.
His words made her realize that he had been trying to protect her all along. He had tried to push her away to keep her safe from the darkness that surrounded him. But she had been too stubborn too naive to understand.
She made a decision then a silent vow to herself. She would not leave his side no matter what. Her life had been turned upside down. She had seen things she could never unsee.
But she would face it all with him. She would be his anchor his light in the darkness.
They reached her house. Adam stopped a few feet away from the entrance to her family’s store. "I put my number in your phone," he said his voice a little softer now. "Don’t give it to anyone. Call me if you ever need me for anything."
He has provided the number of his secure phone, which he wishes to keep secret from everyone, but Adam has shared this number with Sophia.
He turned and walked away before she could reply. Sophia watched him go his solitary figure disappearing into the night. She then went inside her own home the weight of the night’s events pressing down on her.
Adam returned to his own empty house a place filled with the ghosts of his past. He collapsed onto his bed completely exhausted. He had not slept properly in days. The last time he had truly slept was at Sophia’s house a long time ago. As soon as his head hit the pillow he was asleep.
The scene shifted.
Johnny was running through the dark deserted streets of the city like a man possessed. He was a cornered animal his mind a chaotic mess of fear and disbelief.
He needs to head to his space immediately, where he can feel at ease.
He reached a fancy hotel its bright lights a beacon of civilization in the darkness. He ran towards the entrance his only thought to find safety to find sanctuary. A security guard in a sharp uniform stopped him at the door.
"The hotel is closed for the night sir," the guard said his voice polite but firm. "Unless you have a reservation."
Johnny was terrified. He straightened up trying to compose himself to regain some semblance of his former authority. "I have a reservation," he said his voice trembling slightly.
"From the Logan family." It was a secret code a password that would grant him access to the inner sanctum.
The security guard’s demeanor changed instantly. His polite smile vanished replaced by a look of cold professional detachment. "You know you’re only supposed to come here in an emergency Johnny," he said his voice cold and hard. "And what about the task we gave you? What happened?"
"The boy is not as easy as we thought," Johnny stammered his voice a pathetic whimper. "He killed over five hundred of my men by himself. He’s a monster."
The guard’s face grew serious. He put his hand to his mouth his eyes wide with a dawning horror. "Our master was right," he whispered to himself. "We’re in big trouble. If we don’t do something about this boy soon things will get out of hand. He could destroy everything."
He looked at Johnny his expression a mixture of pity and disgust. "We have a rest house," he said. "Go there. The Logan family will provide you with new men and new funds. Rebuild your influence in the city. We still need you."
The guard turned to leave his duty done. "Sir," Johnny called out his voice filled with a desperate urgency.
The guard turned back his eyes flashing with annoyance. "Did you not hear me?" he snapped. "Go to the rest house. That’s an order."
"He let me live," Johnny said his voice barely a whisper. "He spared me. On the condition that I deliver a message to the big families."
The guard was stunned.
