Chapter 992: Awake, but not responsive.
"You heard me, right?" Primo jogged to catch up to Moose. "I’m going to discharge myself."
Moose didn’t reply as he trudged through the hallway, heading to his other patient for his regular rounds.
"And I’m not changing my mind," Primo added. "I’m telling you this in case you want to add something that I should know. At the end of the day, I don’t want to complicate your plans with mine."
"Are you really saying this because you want me to stop you?" Moose stopped in his tracks, turning his head in Primo’s direction. "I’m not as cheesy as you think I am. If you want to go despite everything I told you, then go. My advice wasn’t for me but for you. Don’t make it sound like listening to the doctor’s orders is a favor you’re making for me."
Primo nodded. "I know that. I’m just saying, once I get out of here, I will not come back empty-handed."
"Good for you." Moose resumed his steps. "I have nothing else to say. I said everything in the past several days."
Primo sighed, snapping his eyes at Moose’s figure, who was heading to the intensive care unit. He clicked his tongue, jogging to catch up to him.
"You said that Heaven’s injuries are healing faster like a miracle," he said. "I’m not saying you’re lying or I don’t believe in it. But if she’s healing, that means she might wake up anytime soon."
"She’s healing internally, but the chances of her waking up right now are low."
"Heaven is Heaven. At this point, I believe she’s someone who will break the odds and make the impossible possible."
This time, Moose stopped in his tracks once again and faced Primo squarely. "Heaven is no god. She’s not immortal."
"I know, but at some point, you know what I said is true." Primo held Moose’s eyes, detecting the slight agreement hiding behind them. "You know she’s someone who makes the impossible possible. When she was rushed in here, she almost died. I’m not saying you didn’t play a huge part in that, but she was supposed to be a vegetable. Yet, her results showed she’s healing faster to the point it was impossible."
"Now, the possibility of her becoming a vegetable came down from eighty percent to forty," he added. "It sounds like a load of shit, but that’s reality. I checked her records. Which also drives me to save Hera Cruel. If Heaven wakes up, she needed to hear good news. Ivy and Leo Wu aren’t enough good news."
Moose kept his lips drawn into a thin line, eyes fixed on Primo. He already lost count of how many times he found himself in this same situation. Every day that goes by, Primo’s determination also grows solid. Moreover, even without Primo telling him, Moose knew that Heaven might not be a god or immortal, but she had cheated death many times.
Even if it means living in another person’s body, she would make the impossible possible.
"Attorney, tell me," Moose sighed. "You want to save Hera Cruel, not because of Heaven, isn’t it?"
He took a step forward, holding Primo’s gaze sternly. "You want to save Hera Cruel because, after all these years, this is the first time you have tried to help someone. Your pride couldn’t stand the fact that you failed."
"It doesn’t matter if it’s Hera or someone else. You already set your mind on saving her, and as someone as prideful as you, you want to complete the mission on a good note," he continued. "Stop using Heaven."
"I’m not using Heaven as an excuse," Primo scoffed. "But I’m also not denying that what you said isn’t true. A part of me knows that I want to save her because this is the first time I tried to save someone instead of killing them."
In a way, it would somehow relieve his mind that he could save someone. And he wasn’t just good at scheming and being the villain he was.
"I’m not saying you will deny it," Moose returned. "That is why I’m not stopping you anymore."
Another deep sigh escaped Moose. "Your charts tell me you’re good to go. As a doctor, my only job is to make sure you get better. Now that you’re okay, not just because you said so, but backed with your chart, I won’t stop you from doing whatever you want."
"If you plan to save Hera Cruel, I won’t stop you. It’s not like I don’t know you’ve been frequenting Deborah and Hunter’s wards," he added under his breath. "It’s not like I don’t want to save her myself, but nursing Heaven back to full health is my priority. The world can crumble for all I care. Just don’t die. Heaven would get angry if you just died like that."
Primo’s face slowly relaxed with a tinge of surprise. But Moose simply stared at him for a moment before he resumed his steps, leaving him alone with his team.
"It’s not like I want him to stop me," Primo murmured, watching Moose’s retreating figure. "Nor I’m asking for his permission. I’m just saying it so they won’t worry."
Primo shook his head, getting rid of the slight emotion as Moose’s words somehow moved him. When he turned on his heel, he huffed and marched in the opposite direction. Since he already said what he had to say, he didn’t plan to waste time.
*******
Moose shook his head and sighed for the umpteenth time, heading straight to the intensive care unit. After saying his piece, Primo finally stopped following him. Not that he regretted letting Primo go. He just knew that Primo would go, no matter what.
Moreover, Primo wasn’t a child to be protected. The man used to be the boss of an infamous organization. For sure, he wouldn’t just die so easily. Not to mention, Primo met some people who wanted to save Hera just as much as him like Deborah and Hunter.
"Good thing I already discussed it with Dominic," he told himself after wearing his protective sanitary gear before enticing the intensive care unit. Moose threw the thought at the back of his mind, knowing his patient in this place was his priority.
As Moose carefully approached Heaven’s bed, he slowed down. He furrowed his brows, taking a few more steps to confirm his patient (Heaven) had her eyes open. Without wasting a second, Moose rushed to her side and saw her staring blankly at the ceiling.
"Boss," he called, hastily taking her wrist to check her pulse. Moose efficiently checked her vitals and when he confirmed everything was stable, he looked at her and asked, "Boss, can you hear me?"
But to no avail.
Heaven simply had her eyes wide open, but not responsive.
"Shit," he hissed, casting the other doctor a look. "Run me some tests. I’m going to call Bear."
