Chapter 970: You should go home

The news of Heaven’s condition shook each one of them in a pool of confusion, fear, and distraught. They expected unnecessary changes in their plan and were aware things could go south with a snap of a finger. However, Heaven’s situation was the least everyone expected. For sure, Heaven, herself, didn’t expect to find herself in such a dire situation.

She was skilled enough to save herself in life-and-death situations.

Therefore, their confidence in her was the reason they were thrown off guard when they heard the news. It was the very reason none of them couldn’t fully dive deep into the aftermath of today’s mission. But now that her operation was a success — regardless of the doctor’s advice — they were able to delude themselves she was just recovering in the intensive care unit.

This was not the time for them to mourn. She was still breathing, after all. Nor it was the time for them to process or consider it as a loss. Heading to a private room in the facility, everyone (Dominic, Wolf, Bear, Tiger, Primo, and Moose) gathered. They took random spots in the room with Dominic in the head seat.

Silence hung in the air, as none of them had anything to say. Or rather, they didn’t know how to start or where to start. Dominic cleared his throat to get their attention.

"My wife..." Dominic ran his tongue across his inner cheek. "If this didn’t happen, I’m certain we’d still gather to plan our next move. Let’s talk about today’s event first. Our mission today is to save Hera, Leo, and Ivy. Ivy is already with us. Thankfully, aside from the minor injuries she inflicted, she’s fine. About Leo..."

He trailed off and cast Wolf a look. The latter cleared his throat as he cut the end of his cigar.

"Mr. Wu is fine. He was shot, but fortunately, it was not fatal. He’d recover in no time." Wolf paused, playing the cigar in between his fingers and scanning the faces around him. "I sent him to a trusted hospital under the agency’s protection. Some of my colleagues are looking after him, so we don’t have to worry about his safety anymore. Moreover, it’s not like there’s anything Dimitri and Dragon personally want from him. So, I don’t think they’d even bother going after him. But just in case, I still took extra precautions. It’s hard to fully trust people these days."

Dominic rocked his head in understanding. "At least that part of our plan was solved."

Leo and Ivy, two innocent people who were dragged into this mess, were saved and were now under strict protection. That put a little bit of ease in their hearts.

"Now, onto the problems that arose during the mission," Dominic remarked and the gloom in the room intensified. "We all know that my wife’s condition is not great. Though I’m sure all of us are hopeful, what about Joker and Hera?"

"You should go home." Suddenly, Tiger spoke and earned everyone’s attention. He slowly lifted his eyes and instantly locked his gaze on Dominic. "You should go home and rest, Dom."

"I agree with him." Bear’s expression was hard and dark, nodding. "You should go home now, Dominic."

Dominic let out an airy chuckle, darting his eyes between the two. When he shifted his eyes at Wolf, the latter just shrugged while Moose didn’t seem he was even paying attention.

"Ivy and Leo are already safe. So, I think this is the perfect time for you to remove yourself from here," Bear explained solemnly. "I’m not saying this because I think you’re not a good addition to this team."

"I don’t have much to say in it, but this is not for your sake," Wolf chimed in with a heavy sigh. "I don’t agree or disagree with them, but from this moment on, our foot is already dipped in our graves. Just like what happened to her, we might end up in the same state. Maybe we won’t even reach the hospital and have a chance to fight for our life."

"You guys are wasting your breath," Primo remarked sarcastically. "Do you think he will just go home and leave? After what happened to his wife? I know all of us in here have so little conscience, but it’s ridiculous to ask a man to stop pursuing the people who caused this to his wife."

"Heaven knew the dangers we’d all face before she even went to your cell and negotiated with you," Bear argued, setting his eyes on Primo. "And I’m sure she considered arranging a funeral in case not everyone was able to return in one piece."

Primo scoffed, rendered speechless by Bear’s argument. Bear, on the other hand, shifted his eyes to Dominic.

"Dom," called Bear solemnly. "I’m saying this not just for you, but for those she holds dear in her heart. Leave now... for the children’s sake. Just like Wolf mentioned, we might not be able to return in one piece. It’ll put our hearts at ease, knowing even if we end up dead, someone is out there to take care of her friends, especially her children."

Again, Primo scoffed. However, he couldn’t say anything as he assessed the men around him. Among all of them, Dominic still had a life to go back to. As ridiculous as it was, they had a point. It was foolish for all of them to enter a deadly battle without securing those who were left behind.

For instance, Ivy knew the truth behind Dane. And Leo also knew Dragon. If they didn’t succeed, those two would be next. Dominic would also be in danger. But at least, going back now would give him plenty of time to prepare for the worst and take those two and his children to safety.

The question was, would Dominic agree? For sure, he wouldn’t.

"Sure." In contrast to everyone’s expectations, Dominic didn’t argue as he nodded in agreement. "Now that you brought it up, that saves me the time to discuss it with everyone."

Deep lines appeared on everyone’s brows as intrigued shone in their eyes. He was planning to leave all along?

"I’ve been thinking about it the moment I arrived in this place, and after seeing her, I’ve already decided," Dominic remarked, taking his time to let them process his remarks. "Aside from killing Dragon or Dane, I’m more inclined to gather the best doctors in the world to take care of her. I won’t just sit idly and watch her wither away."

He paused, eyes gleaming with determination. "But before that, I want to let everyone know... Ivy, Leo, and our children... weren’t the only important and precious people in her life. They weren’t the only ones she wanted to protect." The corner of his mouth curled up subtly.

"Each of you is her family," he huffed. "And one thing I remember her saying is... one of the reasons she was initially reluctant to even meddle with Leo’s disappearance is that she didn’t want to risk putting her precious family in ’that’ situation again."

"That’s the least I can do to honor her wishes because..." his voice cracked, scanning their faces and witnessing the slight changes in their countenance. His lips quivered a little as he added, "... because I would never have the heart to take away her life support even if she loathes me for it."
