Chapter 846: The men behind the commotion

After what seemed like an eternity, Moose finally exited the convoy. Heaven was waiting outside, leaning against the SUV this time.

"He’s alright now?" she asked, turning her head to Moose.

"Well," Moose glanced back, catching Primo glaring at him. "He’s fine. Good thing the bullet didn’t move around too much."

"Good." Heaven stepped away from the vehicle, striding toward the open door Moose had emerged from. She peered inside. Primo was bandaged across his body, his pants cut short, and his leg wrapped in a bandage. But what drew her attention was the bag of blood hanging from a handle connected to his arm.

"He seemed better than moments ago," she commented in satisfaction. "Good job."

"Good thing I always bring a spare blood bag," Moose remarked. "And it’s lucky he has the same blood type as me. Otherwise, it would’ve been troublesome."

"For sure." Heaven nodded, still focused on Primo. "Are you okay?"

"Do I look okay?" Primo retorted, rolling his eyes toward the bag of blood. "I’m alright. Though these injuries hurt, I don’t think I’d die. Happy now?"

"Good. Rest for a while because I need you to do something for me."

Primo and Moose glanced at her, eyebrows raised. "So soon?" Primo asked. "What is it this time?"

Heaven didn’t answer immediately, studying the two men. Her gaze then drifted to the soldier she’d tied up outside the vehicle. A subtle change in her expression sent a shiver down the men’s spines.

"Mr. M," Primo nervously called out. "Please tell me whatever’s going on inside her crafty little head won’t cost me my life."

Moose shook his head. "I’ll pray for you, man. But I can’t make any promises. Good luck."

Meanwhile...

Men in various suits stood motionless in a room. They held their hands behind them, silently sizing each other up, poised for conflict if the meeting went awry. At the center of the room sat a table with two chairs occupied by their leaders.

"I didn’t expect you to move so swiftly after agreeing to our terms," Dragon remarked, eyeing the elderly man across from him. "Impressive, I must say."

Ram chuckled lightly. "We’ve known each other for a long time, Frank. I’m more surprised this still surprises you."

"I didn’t mean to offend you, but you’re not young anymore, Ram. Can you blame me?"

"How could that offend me when it’s the truth?" Ram arched his brows, giving Frank a knowing look. "Though I am concerned."

Ram paused, reaching for the decanter between them, pouring himself a whiskey. "Frank, I find it hard to trust you. First, you betrayed Hera despite everything she did for you. And now, you’re targeting your partner, Dimitri. This alliance will probably be marked by betrayal as well."

Setting the decanter down, he lifted the glass, swirling the contents, his eyes fixed on Dragon.

"I was almost taken aback when I heard you want to take down Dimitri," he continued in a relaxed tone. "But then, I remembered your actions toward Hera. It becomes almost expected."

"I didn’t want this," Dragon defended with a shrug. "He left me no choice. If he hadn’t tried to control me, none of this would have happened. I’m not the one to blame for this, but Dimitri."

Ram assessed Dragon’s expression, narrowing his eyes. "You must be very lonely, Frank."

"Lonely? Not at all."

"You can’t trust anyone, not even yourself," Ram remarked. "It must be difficult, always looking over your shoulder, wondering who will betray you next, when you yourself betray those around you."

Dragon chuckled, his eyes glinting. "Perhaps we’re more alike than you think. After all, you betrayed Hunter and sent him to his demise. He’s a good man, capable and trustworthy. I wouldn’t have discovered he was a mole if not for you."

"Sometimes, reasonable men must do unreasonable things," Ram countered knowingly. "What I’m doing is different from your actions. It’s not for me but for Hera. It’s a decision a father must make for his daughter. After all, I failed to protect her once. This time, I will protect her, even if it means I have to go against the world."

"Whatever brings you solace, Ram. But to me, it seems quite similar. Attacking Dimitri also means harming your former colleagues. At this point, it wouldn’t be surprising if those guys already figured it out. After all, they had been in touch with Wolf." Dragon shrugged. "But in the end, it doesn’t matter. You believe what you want to believe, and I can just consider you are like me — ready to be reasonable until it’s time to be unreasonable."

Silence lingered as both men locked their gaze at each other. Dragon reached for his glass, sipping casually, ignoring the escalating tension in the room.

"I’ve dispatched people to find Joker," Ram broke the silence. "I’ll inform you once I find him."

"That’s fine. You don’t have to bother." Dragon waved dismissively. "I’ve also sent some people to search for him."

"You’re underestimating the kid’s ability to hide."

"I know he’s elusive, but I know him. So, I’ve already narrowed down the places he could be hiding. Moreover, I can’t trust you yet. Joker saved Hunter; I’m afraid you might change your mind."

Ram laughed, Dragon’s remark proved his lack of trust in anyone, reaffirming how lonely Dragon’s chosen path must be. How silly, indeed.

"If that’s what you believe is the right thing for you," Ram rocked his head while chuckling. "Anyway, I’ve entertained this conversation enough. Can I see her now?"

"Of course." Dragon nodded, smiling. He rose from his seat, eyes down at Ram. "I’ll take you to her. Did you review the document I sent?"

Ram sighed, rising from his seat. "I’m not fond of it, but if it helps her, what else can I do?"

Dragon smirked, pleased to have Ram somewhat compliant. Despite Ram’s tough facade, he would do anything for Hera. Ultimately, Dragon held the upper hand. With that, he escorted Ram to where Hera awaited.
