Chapter 825: The Cafre Massacre

Chapter 825: The Cafre Massacre

Two years of fighting for a psychopath were mentally and emotionally draining. During the two-year-long legal battle, Primo had met only two kinds of people: those who called him evil, shameless, and greedy, and those who hailed him for his capability. He lost a lot of people in the process, but the people who wanted to be in his circle were equally matched.

Primo didn’t know if that was a good thing or not. As a matter of fact, he didn’t care.

These past two years, he just wanted this to be over. It didn’t matter to him if he won or lost. He did his best, and that was all that was important to him. Regardless of whether he was fighting for a psychopath, he did his best as if his client were innocent.

He thought that since the case was over, he could regain his life before Mister John. Or at least, with this victory, he could have gained a lot more freedom and authority to choose his cases. That thought was what kept him going, and the days after the verdict made him believe that would be his fate.

A lawyer who could choose his cases that wouldn’t compromise his moral integrity as a person. Someone who wouldn’t be too scared to refuse a case just because his boss pressured him to. Starting his own firm was also in his plan. After all, many people wanted his legal help with the legal prowess he displayed in the past two years.

What else could go wrong?

How foolish of him to even ask that question.

How stupid of him to believe that things would end just like that.

And how naive of him to think that karma doesn’t go around.

The end of the two-year-long legal battle was simply the start of his own tragedy.

"I’m home." After a few beeps from the entrance, Primo opened the door with a smile. He had always come home with a smile, and, like a ritual, a little boy would welcome him.

"Brother~!" Martin, his little brother’s voice, echoed in his mind upon his arrival. His smile was bright and proud, something that Primo had grown used to.

Primo chuckled, bending down with his arms spread wide to welcome him into his embrace. Martin jumped into his big brother’s arms, grinning.

"Brother, look!" Martin raised his fist, showing him the back of his hand that had a few stamps of stars. "My teacher told me I’m very good today, so she gave me extra stars!"

Primo glanced at the boy’s hand and smiled. "Ohh... Martin, you’re really impressive!" he cheered, boosting the little boy’s confidence.

"Big brother!" Suddenly, a young girl’s voice reached his ears.

Primo and Martin automatically averted their attention to the owner of the voice. There, Alexa stood a few steps from them, holding her hands behind her. Unlike two years ago, Alexa was more timid and quiet. But now, her smile and aura gave off confidence. Moreover, they were now clad in nicer and warmer clothes, and their skins displayed their good health.

"My report card is here," said the young girl, taking out a medium-sized paper from behind her. "I’m still in the top three this grading."

"Oh?" Primo raised his brows and stretched his arm, checking the report card Alexa handed him. He skimmed through the report card and smiled proudly. He lifted his eyes to meet his little sister’s. "Good job, Alexa. You really make me proud."

He drew a deep breath and smacked his lips, darting his eyes between the two children. "How come you two are growing so fast? You both are good in school, better than I was when I was attending school. Goodness. My little siblings are geniuses, aren’t they?"

Martin and Alexa giggled as their cheeks blushed.

"You guys, can’t you wait for him to change his clothes and rest for a bit?" Suddenly, Mara’s voice reached the three of them.

They instinctively shifted their eyes to Mara, seeing her standing by the entrance of the kitchen with an apron on. Even though their lives had been good — they were able to move into a better and bigger apartment, they were attending private schools, and they didn’t worry about the bills anymore — Mara consistently came home early to help their helper prepare dinner for all of them.

"I told you many times, big brother is tired from work. So, you should at least let him get to his room and rest for a bit before you ambush him," Marra continued, clicking her tongue. "Anyway, Aunt and I are done preparing for dinner. You guys wash your hands so we can eat together."

"Big brother, our big sister is getting grumpier," Martin murmured with a pout.

"You shouldn’t let her hear you or we’ll be in trouble," Primo whispered back, ignoring how Mara’s expression died. "Anyway, listen to your big sister. Wash your hands. I’ll change and then join you."

"Okay~!" Martin jumped a step from Primo and then held Alexa’s hand. "Sister, can you help me?"

"Of course."

With that being said, Alexa led Martin to wash their hands so they could eat dinner together. As they did so, Mara shook her head and snapped her eyes back to her big brother.

"I’m not saying this because I’m not proud of them, but it’s not good to compare your grades with them," she remarked. "Thanks to you, all we have to worry about now is our studies while you have to survive while studying."

"Mara, I never pressured you to have good grades."

"Which made it worse," she argued playfully. "Anyway, you wash up and come to the dining. We won’t start without you, alright?"

As Mara said her piece, she turned around to help their helper in the kitchen. Meanwhile, Primo couldn’t help but chuckle and shake his head mildly.

"The more I think about it, the more she’s taking the role of a mom," he muttered in between his chuckles, marching in to have a change of clothes and spend dinner with his siblings.

This had been a routine that didn’t change despite the change in their lifestyle. No matter how good their life was now, Martin would still rush to the entrance the moment he heard the number of keys being pressed. Alexa would then follow him, and then Mara would come out of the kitchen.

Be it then and now, this routine would never change, as it was their favorite time of the day. But not today.

Primo stood still in the entrance, eyes blank, and his heart sinking to the depths of hell. The usual warmth he was expecting to come home after a two-day trip slowly cracked, the excited giggles and voices fading.

All he came home to was pure silence, and the red stains painting the place.
