Chapter 782: It was your fault

Chapter 782: It was your fault

"The guest’s house... Can you find a way to hide there without getting caught?"

Deborah’s chapped lips parted, but her voice was stuck in her throat. Her eyes blanked momentarily, assessing the calmness Hera exuded. But that wasn’t what surprised her; it was the fact that Hera sounded like she knew everything.

"Hera, you..." Deborah stuttered, raising an injured finger at Hera. "You... knew?"

"How I wish I didn’t, and that searing my brain had worked successfully," Hera said with a brief smile. "Sadly, I remember everything: every second, every detail, and every emotion."

Hera drew a deep breath, closing her eyes momentarily before exhaling.

"Seeing that you’re here and in that sorry state, I guess your retirement isn’t as delightful as we all thought," she pointed out. "But I can’t go with you, Deborah. Why would you even take me with you? Are you planning to kill me so you can hurt him?"

"I’m not dying in your hands." Hera closed the distance between them, standing a step in front of Deborah. "I don’t mind if you used me back then. To tell you the truth, I don’t mind closing the Chapter of your life where I am a victim in it, a person you should feel sorry for. It’s not that I hate you; I just think that’s better for everyone."

"If you came to kill me to get even with Frank, I will fight back," she added sternly, balling her hands into fists. "But if you’re here because you feel guilty for leaving me with a monster, what reassurance do you give me that you can take me away from here?"

Deborah gulped, unknowingly holding her breath. Her reaction was enough for Hera to grasp Deborah’s foolishness.

"You’ve worked for him for many years, wasted your youth serving a man like him. Yet, you’re telling me you simply snuck in here without any other plans?" Hera let out a ridiculing laugh. "I guess you really lost your mind. Even if you think I’m an idiot who lost everything, you shouldn’t have underestimated the man who got this idiot in a chokehold."

"Hera, that — that’s not it." Deborah stammered, urgently reaching for Hera’s hand. "If you know everything, then you should understand I’m also just trying to survive! I had no other choice."

"You had no choice, so you tried to kill me?"

Deborah almost choked on her breath, her pupils widening. Hera’s lips curled into a twisted smile, a scoff of ridicule escaping her.

"My memories have always been clear, but if there’s something that’s a blur, it would be that one in the morgue," Hera explained bitterly. "I kept thinking about it, about who that woman might be, a person apologizing because she simply had to do what she had to do. At first, I didn’t know, but the more time I spent with you, the clearer that memory became."

"It was you." Hera aggressively grabbed Deborah’s shoulders. "It was your fault I am in so much pain, Deborah. If you were trying to kill me back then, you should’ve made sure I died. Why did you have to fail?!"

"Hera..."

Hera’s grip tightened as she ground her teeth, releasing some of her suppressed anger. If Deborah had succeeded in killing her, the trapped soul in this body might have found peace. There wouldn’t be this problem right now, nor this much pain.

But just as Hera was about to speak, she held her breath. Her heart thudded, and she turned toward the door. Her eyes landed on the gap underneath it, catching a shadow suddenly appearing in front of the door. A second later, the knob rattled.

"Shit," Deborah whispered, panicking, recognizing the possibility that it might be Dragon outside.

Hera gulped nervously but stayed composed. "Hide in the closet," she whispered, looking back at Deborah and tugging her shoulders to snap her back to reality.

"Deborah, if you don’t want to die, listen to me," Hera spoke quietly, wide-eyed. "Don’t make a sound, don’t move, and don’t even breathe if you have to. Do you understand?"

Deborah’s eyes shook, her face draining of color. Hera ensured she was listening despite her overwhelming fear.

"Don’t get out unless it’s safe." Hera gestured. "Did you hear me? Nod if you did."

"Closet..." Deborah’s voice cracked while nodding. "Yes, I know."

"Now go." Hera released Deborah, urging her to move.

"How about you?"

"What about me?"

"Will you be okay?" Deborah asked, concerned that Dragon might be suspicious if Hera locked the door, knowing his paranoia.

"Of course," Hera said calmly, turning to the door with sharp eyes. "He already did the worst to me. There’s nothing else he can do to scare me."

She glanced at Deborah, a little annoyed. "Now, go."

Deborah nodded in understanding, keeping her chapped lips pressed together. She hurriedly tiptoed to the closet, hiding behind the dresses. As she settled, stabilizing her racing heart, she peeked through the small gap, seeing Hera standing still in the same spot.

Hera drew a deep breath, closing her eyes momentarily before glancing at the gap underneath the door. She then walked toward the table, eyes on the items there.

’That’s right. He had already done every worst thing he could possibly do to me. There’s nothing that scares me anymore,’ she told herself, picking up the scissors. Her grip around the scissors shook, making her clench her teeth as she remembered every single pain this body had gone through in the past and the present.

’This is nothing.’She shut her eyes and cut her finger. Hera flinched at the prickling pain that went through the nerves of her knuckles, peeking from one eye, only to see blood dripping uncontrollably from her finger to the beautiful flowers on the table.

Hera slowly smiled upon seeing her bleeding finger. Meanwhile, Deborah gasped, covering her gaping mouth, eyes wide at what Hera had just done. But before she could say or think, Hera dramatically dropped to her knees, and at the same time, the door flew open from the outside.
