Chapter 759: Limited-time offer
[Little by little, let my presence linger. <3]
Dragon held a sticky note delicately between his index and thumb, his eyes tracing the short message inscribed upon it. A subtle smile played on the corners of his lips, and his gaze softened as he read the words once more, eventually shifting to the vase gracing his desk.
"She wants to deliver it herself," Deborah spoke after a moment, her eyes studying Dragon’s back, attempting to discern his reaction. "I can dispose of them if you’re not fond of the idea. She’ll never know."
Dragon, still engrossed in the message, ran his fingertips over the petals. "They’re beautiful."
"Huh?" Deborah’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion at his response. "They’re what?"
He chose not to repeat himself, allowing his attention to linger on the flowers artfully arranged in the vase.
"I didn’t know she had such a talent," he whispered. "Despite her penchant for giving single roses to her targets, this arrangement suggests a different message to me."
"What are you saying now?" Deborah mumbled. "Hera doesn’t have any memories. There’s no hidden meaning; it’s just meant to bring you comfort."
Dragon raised an eyebrow, turning to face her. He cast her a look that silently urged her to explain further.
Clearing her throat, Deborah elaborated, "When she woke up after years in a coma, she used to stare out of the window. Those flowers outside brought her comfort during that confusing time. She thought creating a vase with them would offer you the same solace."
"In essence, she believed that assembling these flowers would bring you the same comfort it brought her," she continued, shrugging with a hint of awkwardness as she conveyed Hera’s intentions. "It might seem a bit cliche and corny for you, but I couldn’t bring myself to tell her otherwise. She’s a little sensitive, and you might kill me for making her cry."
"When did you become Dragon, Deborah?" Dragon chuckled lowly, turning his back to her and focusing on the vase. His fingers caressed the flowers, a subtle smile gracing his face. "You’re not me, so you don’t get to decide if it’s too corny for my taste."
Deborah bit her tongue, studying him carefully. "Sorry."
"It’s fine. I understand people like you who overstep sometimes," he remarked casually, unaffected by the impact of his words. "If you have nothing more to say, you may leave."
As Dragon immersed himself in the beauty of the vase, a minute passed, yet Deborah remained in place. He raised an eyebrow, glancing over his shoulder to find her still standing there.
"Is there something important you’d like to discuss?" he inquired, and Deborah sighed deeply.
"I want to take some time off," she confessed, watching him slowly turn to face her. "I’m planning a vacation, Dragon."
"You are?"
"It’s Tarrah’s graduation soon," she explained, invoking her sister’s name to underscore the significance. "I want to be there for her."
"She’s graduating? That soon?"
"Yes." A smile graced her face as she lowered her eyes. "It’s surprising, considering how small and sickly she used to be. Now, she’s graduating from the most prestigious school in the country."
"You must be very proud, Deb." Dragon leaned against the desk, folding his arms.
"Of course!"
"So, are you resigning?"
"No." Deborah shook her head quickly. "I’m proud of her, but I didn’t work this hard to hinder her future. I just want to watch from a distance."
"That’s the saddest thing I’ve heard today."
"Don’t be hypocritical, Dragon. We both knew this would happen when I joined your organization," she stated bluntly. "I don’t regret it. Back then, there was no hope for me, but the choices I made secured a better future for her. Watching from afar is enough for me."
"I see." Dragon nodded in understanding. "Have you considered retiring, Deborah?"
Her brows furrowed at his unexpected proposal. "What?"
"You’ve served me for years, and your contributions have been valuable," he explained calmly. "Considering your years of service, I can release you if you wish. Resign and be with your sister indefinitely."
"Dragon." Instead of elation, a sense of dread crept up Deborah’s spine. What was his intention? Dragon rarely released people unless they were no longer alive. Was he planning something sinister?
"Haha. I can see you’re concocting all sorts of scenarios in your head," Dragon chuckled, reading Deborah like an open book. "It’s not what you think. I brought you in because you were a skilled... professional. You adapted quickly, and you even introduced that woman to me."
"Now that Hera and I are on good terms and my plans have come to fruition, I thought about giving you your freedom back," he continued knowingly. "I can’t reward June anymore, but considering her efforts and yours, I think you’ve earned this."
Deborah stayed silent, holding Dragon’s gaze. Her lips parted slightly, eyes wide.
"You’re letting me go?" she repeated, and he nodded. "Are you playing games with me?"
"If you’re not interested, that’s fine. But I’m offering you a choice." He shrugged nonchalantly. "Think it over."
"I — this is..." Deborah struggled to find the right words, chuckling nervously. When she met his gaze again, she said, "I’ll consider it."
"You can decide after your sister’s graduation," he suggested. "My brother is returning soon, and I can afford to lose a hand."
Deborah pressed her lips together, nodding. "Fine. Thank you," she said before turning on her heel, biting her lips to suppress a smile.
Dragon watched her figure as she left, seeing her glance back at him. When the door closed behind her, a sly smile appeared on his lips, a hint of malice flickering in his eyes.
"This is a limited-time offer," he whispered, picking up a flower stem from the vase. Holding it in front of him, he admired it, gently twisting it from left to right.
"Seize it, Deborah," he added under his breath, lifting the flower to his nose. "... it’s essential to be with the ones you love."
