Chapter 48: Soul eaters
Chapter 48: Soul eaters
Rhett watched with terrified eyes as blood exuded from the nostrils of Morcel and tickled down his mouth.
"The soul eaters are here!", he shouted. "Don’t slack now".
They all hit their horses very hard out of fear it made them zoom forward, the parched ground that was without dust now carrying one as the hooves trampled on the ground very hard and their fetlocks looked weak.
Ash threw a glance backwards, it felt to him like a gaze because now he felt he saw things in slow motion. He saw a giant entity, a dark cloudy like figure actually, large and daunting to stare at, sprouting from the ground.
His heart almost jerked out of his chest and he stared, his mouth sealed like something that was sown, his face like a scraggly sketch.
"What the frickles!", he exclaimed. "They’re going to kill us all".
More were sprouting from the ground, doing the same as the previous one had done. Their nails were large and white. It actually was the only thing that was white on them, Including their tiny eyes that as they flickered it with the similitude of the flapping of feathers, made Ash sweat real badly.
The soul eaters had the statue of chimpanzees crouching. The way they stood and gnawed their teeths as they ate the dead body of Morcel made Haicor sick.
"They’ve killed Morcel!", Haicor said on top of her voice.
"And apparently now they are eating him, gross as hell!", Rhett put it.
"They are trying to get the shard of his soul, they are trying to get the damn shard of his damn soul!"Ash exploded. "They want to level up".
True to Ash’s words, they were actually eating the soul of Morcel to gain its shard. But they couldn’t just go direct to his soul, they had to eat his flesh to get the shard.
"How do shards look like?", Rhett asked on top of his voice as more of the soul eaters sprouted from the ground and ran frenetically at them.
"They look like shards, real ones. Like the broken fragments of a glass of window, something like that", Ash replied.
A soul eater, the second to the largest actually, opened its large hands and with a swift pace, ran directly at Rhett. Ash goggled at him and shouted:
"Act fast or you are going to get devoured by this beast!".
His horse continued to ride forward by the way, while Rhett just stared blankly, forward. He had a plan and even though it wasn’t the smartest of ones, it was a damn plan.
Rhett felt like his precious brain had been bestowed with pressure. A damn hell of pressure!.
The beast was nearer now, Rhett almost colliding into it.
Ash’s loud voice; "Arise!".
’And shine’, Dhamsel thought, her face harbouring an expression that was golden. It was actually a mixture of fear and suspense.
Didn’t she want Rhett to die?
Why?
Because he murdered her father?
No?
Yes?
Then why?
Ash shout echoed into Rhett’s ears:
’Arise!’.
And shine?
Nah!, he knew the correct answer.
"And duck", Rhett whispered softly. Controlling the ropes of his horse and putting it on a kneeling side. His expectation wasn’t really executed but at least he survived. He had imagined he would slide under the legs of the monster, passing through like a rockstar. But he actually didn’t do that, instead he passed into the right leg of the creature and to his surprise, they didn’t stop. And that was when he realized (although he had known that before, but now much to his current situation), that the beast was actually made up of cloudy foggy ish stuff.
Rhett was titled out of his horse, not by anything or by anybody, but by the force of the act of ducking.
It suddenly felt like it drizzled, because Rhett could feel tiny droplets of water drooling on his body( that was how it felt, figuratively). He looked to the sky, catching his breath, Haicor, Ash and Dhamsel staring at him in relief. Even Daxer and the remaining of the dragon hunters(now dragon slayers).
Rhett looked at the beast now who had stumbled, almost fell (but had not), and was now bracing himself for another attack. It was at that moment that Rhett realized that it was only the sensational, prickling feeling of his sweats that had given him that nostalgic feeling.
The other soul eaters were now done eating Morcel corpse and gaining its shard. They now stood up and licked their lips, gazing at the other dragon slayers, now pouncing on them.
In a brutal, sudden, unexpected dash, they had ripped about four dragon slayers, now feeding on their corpses and trying to gain their soul and then their shards.
"I don’t think any of us will survive!", Daxer said. "Even for the almighty king Rhett, the chances are little".
Rhett honestly agreed with that, in his mind by the way.
"Everyone get off their horses!", Ash shouted. "It’s going to affect us after we pass this phase but anytime the soul eaters wants to get to you, just try to shove your horses at it, so you can escape!".
They all nodded in the affirmative and got off their horses, Rhett coming down last, his face now determined. He had now made the decision to lead his people out of this shit!.
They heard a loud noise and when they looked up, they saw, written in bold capital letters:
[TEN MORE SOUL SHARDS TO ATTAIN RANK OF TIER THREE. RIP ALL THIS PEOPLE AND YOU GUYS LEVEL UP TO TIER NINE]
Rhett almost cried, this was honestly too much for him. He looked at the soul eaters now, the damn shadow monsters of the shadow mare tower, their maw wide open, ready to devour the sumptuous looking preys standing helplessly in front of them.
Helplessly?.
Oh, that’s only an understatement.
They all now heard a loud piercing whistle done by the mouth and when they looked up?, oh now they saw dark shadow looking dragons, descending on them.
Rhett gritted his teeth; "Damnit!", he exclaimed.
