Chapter 587: The Golden Dragon’s Pearl Opens Its Doors
Lulled by the chant of roosters, Adam and Misha leapt out of the blankets at sunrise and grinned at each other.
"Ready?" Misha winked, her cheeks flushed with excitement as she quickly smoothed down her hair.
Adam nodded, channelling water Qi in his hand as he passed it over his face. The cool sensation freshened him up as he raised his thumb.
"To roll on sect points? Always!"
Without wasting a second, they used old clothes to make the shop’s displays sparkle and placed one eye-catching pill of each type inside.
With the displays arranged to their satisfaction, Misha turned to Adam.
"We should label these with their effects and prices, right?" She took out a piece of paper, a bottle of ink, and a brush she had borrowed from Shen. "We’d lose our voices if we had to explain everything every single time."
Adam nodded. "You’re right. We have a hundred and ninety-three Qi-gathering pills and a hundred and thirty-two for body strengthening. How much do you think we should sell them for?"
Misha tucked her fingers around her shin, a pensive frown creasing her brows.
"I told you yesterday that other shops sold terrible ones for twenty sect points. Yours have that distinctive golden sheen and potent herbal aroma. Perhaps double?"
"Sounds good." He rubbed his hands, gold coins flashing in his sparkling eyes as Misha made small tags for each displayed pill. "I hope we’ll sell at least fifteen to pay off our debt today."
"That’d be great since no one knows us." She shook her head. "We forgot something critical, Adam. The shop can’t open before we fix it!"
He scratched his cheek and raised his palms in confusion. They had good products, a warm place to sell them, and genuine smiles curving their lips. So, what had they forgotten?
As his mind raced for the answer, Misha continued, her voice echoing in the silent shop. "Our shop... doesn’t have a name! What a blunder!"
Adam rolled his eyes, then facepalmed.
"That’s the critical mistake, sister? Ok, we’ll call it Adam and Misha’s Wonders. Problem solved." He dusted his hands, clicking his tongue at the false alarm.
However, Misha took it more seriously. She planted a fist on her hip, raised a finger, and leaned over him.
"I know you’re impatient, but the shop’s name will become your brand, and this one is..." She rolled her eyes and continued. "Would you trust the sect if it was named the muddy toad? It’s the same!"
Adam frowned. "You have a point there."
He would definitely not trust idiots who call themselves that, and he wouldn’t lose anything by picking a decent name, so why not?
"The sect’s name has dragon in it, and my pills have a golden sheen..." He raised his thumb. "What about The Golden Dragon’s Pearl?"
Misha’s eyes sparkled as she nodded and shoved the brush and ink in his hands. "I love it! Quick, paint it on the facade while I open the storefront!"
With a chuckle, he went out, the fresh dawn breeze ruffling his hair and the soft sun’s rays filtering through the mountain peaks.
A few disciples yawned on their way to the training grounds, meaning he would wait for a while to receive his first customers.
Others arranged clean sheets of vivid colors around their stalls, aimed to attract customers’ gazes. The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air as some disciples filled dough with meat, fish, and sweet fillings while a large pot of water steamed beside them.
Somehow, he enjoyed this peaceful and mundane atmosphere. Perhaps it was because he had always dreamed of owning a shop, a dream that stretched back to the days when he taught Theodor to cook for Julius.
He chuckled as he painted the name in calligraphed letters before he nodded at the fierce ’The Golden Dragon’s Pearl’.
Returning inside, he donned his alchemist’s robes—for the first time—and took his place behind the counter, waiting impatiently for the disciples to notice them.
And after only a few minutes, he jumped off his seat as the doorbell rang. Finally, the first one!
However, his eyes widened the next second.
"Miss Mei Lan?"
The aged lady chuckled, the two baskets she carried swinging gently as she approached.
"Of course, children. I can’t let you starve on your first day of business."
She placed the baskets on the counter, the savorous aroma wafting through the sheets covering them.
He bowed in gratitude, her gentleness and care touching him.
Then, he opened his basket and devoured the still-hot rice, meat, and delicious sauce with Misha while Mei Lan observed them for a moment with a warm smile before she walked to the door.
"You can bring the basket back after you close. Shen and I are proud of you, children. Keep up the good work."
’What an angel.’ Adam thought as her hunched back disappeared into the streets, and his desire to help her burned brighter in his chest.
With their stomachs full, they waited for their first customer in an excellent mood.
Tense minutes passed, then hours, yet he still watched the empty doorway and drummed nervously on the counter until Misha patted his back.
"Don’t worry. I’ll go out and bring someone."
He watched her leave and return ten minutes later, his eyes sparkling as he observed a girl about her age.
Without wasting a second, he leapt over the counter, opened his arms wide, and smiled.
"Welcome to The Golden Dragon’s Pearl, senior sister. What kind of pill would help you with your cultivation?"
"Good morning, junior. I’m looking for a pill to refine my body. Preferably something to clean my muscles and organs." The girl nodded, her eyes drawn to the two bronze stars embroidered on Adam’s robes.
Meanwhile, Adam grinned and gestured to the violet and golden pill in one of the four displays.
"You’re in the right place, then! This one will cleanse your organs of impurities. The other one can strengthen your muscles. Forget about bottlenecks; you’ll breeze through the next realm with them."
Interested, the girl leaned over the displays and read the price tags before the detailed descriptions of the various poisonous herbs used to refine the pill made her step back.
"You’re selling pills made with poison at your age? Isn’t it a little too dangerous, junior? And why are your prices double?"
A slight frown creased Adam’s brow as he saw her defensive posture and the distrust in her eyes. Well, he wouldn’t trust a kid who sold pills made with poisonous herbs either... But his eyes narrowed. He couldn’t let their first customer leave with a bad impression and even less spread it to her friends. No! Anyone who entered his shop had to buy something, or his crafter’s soul would weep at the disgrace.
