I Refused To Be Reincarnated -
Chapter 549: Public Enemy Number One in the Fourth Area
Chapter 549: Public Enemy Number One in the Fourth Area
While the cow recounted Lin Yao’s story under the bright moonlight, Adam’s baby hands rubbed his eyes.
Yet, his rosy lips curled into an amused smile.
’I guess Nova would jump in joy if she saw me now.’ He turned his head to gaze at the horizon. ’Look, I’m going to rest like you wanted.’
Despite his humourous attempt, his smile trembled, and a deep frown creased his brows.
’Please, remain safe with Julius and Arun. I’ll find a way to return before too much time passes on your side.’
Her naïve face appeared in his mind, followed by her cheerful smile, cat, and weird questions. Then, Julius’ valiant posture showed up behind her. His genuine smile and bright hazel eyes caused his heart to pound in his chest for a second before Arun joined him. Blue flames danced around his mage’s robes in an intricate show of mana control.
A deep sigh escaped his mouth as he bit his lips and closed his eyes.
Slowly, sleep encroached on his memories, banishing his thoughts for a second.
Then, he reopened them under his soul sea’s bright blue sky.
The plain’s verdant grass tickled his spotless skin as a gentle breeze carried the fresh scent of the forest and ruffled his hair.
A warm smile crept on his lips.
’At least this place will never change.’
However, the familiar hum of the vortex he had opened to link his soul sea to the dream place drew his attention.
Eyes enlarging in anticipation, he craned his head in its direction. And there he saw it!
’The vortex is still here! Didn’t Luna banish me from the dream place? Did she commit a mistake, or did she change her mind?’
His heart raced against his chest, and curiosity engulfed him.
Without wasting a second, and thanks to his earlier training, he conjured a mage’s hand. It hovered above him, as dense as a physical object yet as blue as his mana.
With deft control, he made it cradle him and float through the vortex.
When he emerged on the other side, he saw the familiar plaza. The sky was the same, too, starless, eternally dark, and gloomy.
Habitations of all kinds, sizes, and styles circled the place as the same tower he hated reached for the dreary red moon in the middle.
However, unlike the usual teenagers running around in their mage’s robes, he saw a sea of youths well past their twenties.
He frowned at their cultivator’s attires and the characters stamped on them, feeling alien to the place.
’Where the heck am I? Wait...’ His pupils constricted as an idea rumbled in his mind. ’Luna sent humanity’s survivors to sixteen worlds. I was in the eleventh area, meaning there were fifteen others!’
He gritted his toothless gums, his eyes trailing to the three colossal windows in the sky.
’Dream place area 4... Huh?! What the heck am I seeing?!’ His jaw dropped open as his eyes landed on the surreal rankings.
In the magic world, the first team had cleared the fourth floor after many difficulties and preparations.
Even if he never returned after conquering the third, he knew he could have steamrolled the fifth before giving up on the sixth.
’So how did someone beat it already? Alone?’ His eyes narrowed into slits, wisps of dense mana wafting from them as he only saw a single name on the first spot. ’Who’s this bastard Ye Feng who stole my first place?!’
No one had the right to be ahead of him without his authorisation. Yet, not only did Feng do it, but he could hear a shard of confidence break like glass in his heart.
His baby’s fists clenched, and more mana poured out of his eyes as he roared inwardly.
’This is a direct provocation! No! This entire realm is provoking me! I’m not even displayed on the job’s ranking when their top one is only an alchemist of the sixth tier!’ He struck his forehead with his small fists. ’What’s happening in this place?’
He huffed in suppressed anger, his flaring mana and floating body drawing a few astonished gasps.
A woman in particular walked to him. Her dark and red sleeveless robes fluttered behind her as she pointed her fit arm at him. Her voice, laced with confusion, resounded next.
"How are you still a baby after we reincarnated in this realm thirty years ago, and how are you floating?" She tilted her head to the side. "Don’t tell me the spell malfunctioned for you. Anyway, you’re lucky. My sect elders just informed me that the realm leaders increased the time flow by ten times again to prepare for a catastrophe. So, you still have a few decades to prepare... Wait, can you even understand me?"
She scratched her head as a deep furrow creased his brows and his mind raced.
’Thirty years? So, time only flowed twice as fast initially. And now, as Luna said, it increased to twenty times.’ His eyes narrowed into determined slits. ’I can’t return before growing up. So, I’ll give myself twenty years to find a way back home. But first, I must gather more information from this woman.’
He exhaled his earlier frustration and channelled his mana to use the first technique he ever developed.
A split second later, rows of solid text appeared before him to answer the woman.
’I’m Adam. Unlike you, I started in the magic world, but for some reason, I became a baby and started anew here.
Before he could follow up with a question, the woman’s enlarged eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.
She ignored the strange occurrence and reread the text once more before her voice echoed in an ominous tone that drew everyone’s attention.
"A mage?"
Soon, he saw those cultivators surround him, hands gripping their weapons.
"I don’t know if you’re one of us or if that bastard covered in a veil of souls infiltrated us. But we won’t take any risk! Mages are the cultivators’ enemies, anyway!" She raised her fists and took a fighting stance. "In the name of Prometheus, I sentence you to death!"
Meanwhile, he gawked, his jaws sinking in disbelief at the surreal accusations.
’You crazy bastards! How can you mistake me for the magus, and how do you want him to infiltrate the place when it’s literally inside Atlas’ eyes?!’
He roared in his mind.
Yet, the wind whistled, and weapons flashed to slice his toddler’s soft body mercilessly.
Heart drumming in his ears and breath caught in his throat, he instantly closed his eyes. In that split second, he felt cold metallic Qi lick his skin, only a millimeter away from digging inside and drawing blood.
CLANG
The sound of weapons colliding with the plaza’s sturdy ground echoed as his figure disappeared a split second before they cleaved him.
