Chapter 89: Arrested By The Police In His Own Home
The peaceful morning at the Chadwick home was shattered by the sudden, unwelcome intrusion. Brooke ran down, just in time to see a squad of uniformed officers, their faces etched with grim determination, storm in through the front door.
Lottie who had been by the pool but got startled by the commotion, came into the house, tying the belt of her robe securely around her waist. Both women watched in disbelief as the officers moved swiftly, their eyes fixed on one target: Jeff Chadwick.
"What is going on here?" Lottie demanded, her voice trembling. "Who are you, and what do you want in my house?"
The lead officer, a stern-faced man with a badge pinned to his chest, ignored her question. "Mr. Chadwick, you are under arrest and we demand that you come with us immediately," he announced, his voice cutting through the air.
Jeff, his face pale and his eyes wide with shock, was unceremoniously handcuffed and led away. Lottie and Brooke were left stunned, their minds reeling. They had never seen Jeff in such a vulnerable state, arrested by the police, in his own home?
"What is happening?" Brooke asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Lottie, her anger rising, turned to the officers. "You have to tell me why you are arresting my husband," she demanded.
The officer hesitated, then replied, "Ma’am, I am afraid I can’t discuss the details to you. You are going to have to speak to his lawyer and then find out the charges against him."
Lottie was furious. She could not believe what was happening. Her husband was a respected businessman, a pillar of the community, was being arrested like a common criminal. She was determined to get to the bottom of this.
She watched helplessly as Jeff was bundled into a squad car.
"Lottie, call Gerald so he can find out what this is all about." Jeff called out desperately while Lottie nodded.
"We are going to the police station," she declared. "I want to know what exactly is going on."
Brooke, however, had a different perspective. "Lottie, I think it is best if we stay away from this," she said, her voice filled with unease. "Being associated with a felon could damage my reputation and my future, Sutton is not going to like it."
Lottie was stunned by her daughter’s cold, calculating words. She had always known and tolerated the fact that Brooke was self centered because it had been directed towards someone else, but now she was facing it, it hurt.
"What do you mean by that? We have to stand together." Lottie spat. "You can’t just turn your back on your own father."
Brooke shrugged. "Look, I am just being realistic, Lottie. We have to think about my future, it’s already bad enough that he was picked up in the house, I wonder what the neighbors must think of us."
Usually, Lottie would be concerned with what the neighbors had to say but not at that moment. She could not let her Jeff stay in jail. Feeling heartbroken and betrayed, Lottie stormed out of the house, leaving Brooke alone with her thoughts.
As angry as she was at Brooke’s attitude, she knew that she could not blame her. She had raised her to be uncaring about anyone else and because she believed her mother was dead, she did not care about anyone but herself.
At the police station, Lottie was met with a wall of silence. The officers refused to give her any information about Jeff’s arrest. Frustrated and desperate, she decided to seek help from Gerald, Jeff’s lawyer.
The lawyer, a seasoned legal professional, explained to Lottie that Jeff had been arrested on suspicion of corruption. He had allegedly embezzled millions of dollars from the company and approved the purchase of substandard products that had caused some of their customer’s deaths.
Lottie was shocked and horrified. Not because she had never suspected that Jeff was capable of such a thing, but because if there were people who died because of him then it was more serious than she thought and getting him out would be really hard.
"But what proof is there that Jeff did anything like this?" she asked, her voice haughty despite what was looming before her.
The lawyer stared at her. "There are documents, Mrs. Chadwick. Documents with Jeff’s signature all over, his accounts have also been scrutinized and unfortunately, there is suspicious activity."
Lottie sat down heavily, she was devastated. Her world had been turned upside down. She had lost her husband, her reputation, and her sense of security. She did not know what to do or where to turn.
"What can we do now, Gerald." She asked anxiously, her eyes probing the lawyer’s in the hopes that something could be done. But unfortunately, there was no hope in Gerald’s eyes.
"I would advise you to get a lawyer, the best that money can buy because your husband has a rough road ahead for him." He said and got up.
"Wait.. where are you going?" Lottie demanded in fright.
Gerald frowned at her, "I cannot in good conscience take this job."
Her face turned to an ugly scowl. "Then get out of my face, you spineless idiot. We don’t need you." She screamed in her voice, spittle pouring everywhere.
Gerald was taken aback by her sudden violence, he stared at her and shook his head, thinking that the Chadwick family were going to need a lot of help.
By the next day, the scandal surrounding Jeff’s arrest had spread like wildfire. The media was relentless, painting a picture of a corrupt businessman who had betrayed the trust of his employees and investors and customers.
Lottie, was struggling to cope. She was no longer the media’s darling and was constantly bombarded by reporters, and she was forced to face the harsh reality of her situation. She was a pariah, a woman whose husband had been disgraced.
She tried to reach out to Lyse several times, but Lyse seemed to have no interest in her or her woes. And Brooke simply distanced herself from all the drama.
