Chapter 84: Mother’s Unexpected Visit

Chapter 84: Mother’s Unexpected Visit

Levi’s irritation was palpable when he heard about the unwelcome guest who had gained entry into his house. He turned to Dalton, and asked, "Who is this guest?"

Before Dalton could respond, a familiar voice cut through the air. "Levi, my dear boy," his mother, Lily, announced her presence. She swept into the room, her elegant demeanor masking the underlying tension.

"Mother, what a surprise. Why did you not tell me that you would be coming?" He asked.

Levi was surprised to see his mother, he knew that her sudden presence in his house was not a great thing. He had hoped that she was too busy with all her charity projects but apparently she was not too busy.

"I did not know that I needed permission to come see my only son." She said, her eyes landed on Lyse, who was now sitting on the couch, looking pale and fragile. "How are you feeling, my dear?" she inquired, her voice filled with concern.

Lyse managed a weak smile. "I am okay Lily, thank you," she replied, her voice barely a whisper.

Eleanor nodded, her gaze shifting back to Levi. "I trust you are taking good care of her?" she asked, her tone laced with judgment.

Levi bristled at her implication. "Of course, Mother," he replied, his voice sharp. "She is recovering well."

After insisting on taking Lyse to the room, tucking her in and ensuring that she was comfortable, Lily cornered Levi in the hallway. "Now, Levi," she began, her voice low and serious, "what exactly is the meaning of this?"

Levi’s heart pounded in his chest. He knew what she was referring to. The recent scandal, the rumors, the whispers.

"What are you talking about, Mother?" he asked, feigning innocence.

Lily rolled her eyes. "Don’t play dumb with me, Levi. I know all about your little indiscretion. Your father would be appalled. How can you cheat on your wife so soon after getting married?"

Levi’s jaw clenched. He had never been one to shy away from a challenge, but his mother’s disapproval was a different beast altogether. She had always been a force to be reckoned with, and he knew better than to underestimate her.

"My father bore a son he conveniently did not know about, who is now causing problems for us."

His words caused a chill between them, opening up old wounds and bringing back the ache and betrayal they had felt at Brett’s abrupt appearance.

Lily stared appraisingly at him and sneered. "Is that why you cheated on her? Because your father had a child out of wedlock?"

"I did not cheat on Lyse." He said and when Lily raised a doubtful eyebrow, he ran a hand through his hair.

"Someone set me up. I went for a meeting and next thing I know, Anya is all over me, forcefully kissing me. Apparently, someone was taking pictures."

Lily mused for a moment then said, "did your brother do it?"

"No, I don’t think Brett did it." He he’d had suspicions about Brett’s role in Anya’s deception so he had investigated, Brett had come up clean.

"You have to be careful son." She said as she watched his face closely. "If you have married Lyse only because you want to win, then you need to let her go."

The thought of letting Lyse walk out of his life made his head ache.

"Mother, I assure you, there is nothing to worry about," he said, trying to calm her down. "Lyse is a good woman. She loves me, and I love her. That is why I married her."

Lily scoffed. "Love? Is that all it takes for you, Levi? A fleeting emotion? You married Lyse because your father’s will demanded it, not because you truly loved her."

Levi winced at her words and knew that she was throwing back his words at him. A while ago, she had told him he needed to find love and he had called it a "fleeting emotion".

He shook his head and said firmly. "That is not true," he insisted. "I love Lyse. She is the only one for me."

Lily sighed, her expression softening. "I hope you know what you are doing, Levi. Because if you hurt Lyse, I won’t forgive you."

"I am not going to hurt her, Mother," he promised. "I will protect her."

Lily sighed. "If I have been able to come to this conclusion, don’t you think others will think the same?"

Levi’s appearance became fierce. "No one has the right to scrutinize my marriage or my life." He thundered.

Lily’s eyes narrowed at his stubbornness. "You have to be careful, Levi. It will soon be time, and Brett is on the warpath. He will not hesitate to exploit your weaknesses."

Levi nodded, understanding the gravity of his mother’s warning. He knew that he had to be vigilant, to protect both himself and Lyse from Brett’s machinations.

When his mother left, Levi could not shake the feeling that he was being watched. He knew that Brett was out there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to strike and take away his legacy.

He went up to look at Lyse, who was still asleep. Her peaceful face was a stark contrast to the storm brewing outside. Once again, he wondered why she had lied about those flowers, it seemed she was hiding something serious.

He however vowed to protect her, to shield her from the darkness that threatened to consume them both, even if she hated him.

And that meant starting with her family. They had tried to kill his wife by feeding her something they must have known she was allergic to, he could not take that insult.

By the time he was done with them, they would regret trying to harm Lyse. As he walked down the stairs, his eyes narrowed at the stranger who was coming up the stairs with a tray.

"Who are you?" He demanded and she curtsied nervously.

"I am Aileen, Sir. I am the new cook."

’Oh yeah, the new cook to replace Mrs Evelyn.’

"Carry on them." He said and walked past her.
