Chapter 78: Severe Allergic Reaction

Levi, sensing her distress, quickly stood up, his concern evident as he approached her. "Lyse, what happened?" he asked, his voice filled with worry.

She shook her head, seemingly unaware of her surroundings. Levi pulled her into his arms and protected her from the probing eyes of the people ar the table.

"I think we should be leaving right now." He announced, "My wife is not feeling fine."

With that, he swept her off her feet and carried her out of the dining room. Jeff got to his feet and hurriedly followed them out.

"I am so sorry, Levi, Lyse," he apologized, his face etched with guilt. "Do you want me to go with you? Are you going to take her to the hospital?"

Levi did not want to speak with Jeff because he felt like his apology was hollow, that he had played a part in Lyse’s misery. He regretted insisting that they come for the dinner because now that he had seen Lyse with her family, he wanted to keep them as far away from her as possible.

"You don’t have to come with us," Levi said, his tone short and sarcastic. "It is not your fault."

Jeff nodded, his expression somber. "I still feel so guilty, I hoped that we would have a good time."

As he carefully put her in the car, Levi realized that Lyse’s face had turned a sickly shade of pale, her eyes beginning to water. A rash was spreading across her skin, and she started to wheeze. His heart pounded as he recognized the signs of what could be a severe allergic reaction. Panic surged through him as he realized the danger she was in.

A flustered Jeff stood in the doorway, watching in disbelief as the car disappeared into the dark night. The realization of the gravity of the situation hit him, and a wave of fear washed over him. From the brief interaction, it was clear to see that Levi cared about Lyse. He would not be pleased at how she had been treated and that meant trouble for him.

He pivoted back into the house, his strides long and purposeful as he headed to the dining room.

Meanwhile, back at the house, the rest of the people were contemplating what had caused Lyse’s reaction.

"I wonder what was wrong with her." Brooke mused.

Lottie sneered. "I bet she is pregnant."

Sutton choked on her wine and sputtered. "Pregnant? How possible is that?"

The thought of Levi having a child by Lyse chilled her to the bone. That would be even worse than her getting married to Levi, she could never let a thing like that happen.

"It’s not my baby." Brandon said grumpily. "Lyse never let me touch her."

He wished that the baby was his, then he would have the right to claim Lyse back as his.

"Then how can she be pregnant? Her marriage to Levi is not that old." Sutton persisted. She could not bear the thought of Lyse being pregnant, no!

"Unless the baby is not for Levi either." Brooke said mischievously.

"What do you mean by that?" Brandon asked, his eyes narrowed.

"It is very possible that Lyse has had a lover. That would make sense with the way that she was able to switch from you to Levi and trap him into marriage." Lottie said sagely.

Brandon shook his head. "That does not make sense," he said. "Lyse is not that kind of girl."

"What do you mean?" Sutton demanded sharply as her eyes zoomed in on her son.

"Yes Brandon, what do you mean?" Brooke echoed, facing him with annoyance in her eyes.

"All I am saying is that all the time that I dated Lyse, she was very wholesome. She never even let me see her nude." He said, standing by his point.

Sutton steppled her fingers on the table and stared at her son in disbelief.

"Are you under a charm or are you just plain stupid?" She hissed then stood up and looked at Lottie.

"Lottie, thank you for the invitation but I’m afraid I must leave now."

Lottie rose up also and protested, "But you have not had dessert yet, we are having a lovely tiramisu."

"Some other time maybe." Sutton flipped her hair and walked out, passing Jeff as he returned.

Sutton’s spirits slumped at the sight of Jeff. She had hoped to run into Levi before he left but unfortunately, it seemed she would not get that opportunity.

As Jeff entered the dining room, his anger simmered as he did not want to explode. Fortunately for him, Brandon pushed back his chair and stood up.

"I too must be leaving." He said. "Thank you for the meal, Mr and Mrs Marlowe."

"Wait, let me come with you." Brooke jumped up and grabbed his arm.

Brandon maintained his calm even though he wanted badly to shake Brooke off him, she irritated him.

"Bye Lottie, bye dad." She bade them farewell as she left the house with Brandon.

As soon as they got into the car and had driven away from the house, Brandon exploded.

"That was very stupid, what did you do that for?"

Brooke gasped and stared at him. "What are you yelling at me for, what did I do wrong?"

"Why did you announce an engagement date when you had not even informed me?" Brandon yelled even louder for good measure.

"But you told me that I could chose whatever date was okay with me." Brooke said with tears shimmering in her eyes.

When Brandon glared at her and then stared squarely at the road, she narrowed her eyes and stared balefully at him.

"That is not the real reason why you are mad, is it?"

"What do you mean?" He asked, his voice considerably less loud.

Brooke sneered at him. "I know that you are really mad because you saw that whore with that old man."

Brandon’s car suddenly careened and he pulled over by the side of the road so abruptly, that Brooke who had not bothered to wear a seatbelt was flung against the windshield.
