Chapter 62: Rescued

Levi ignored the sharp pain in his arm as he scrambled to the edge of the cliff. The sight that met his eyes was horrifying and also hopeful. While Max’s lifeless body lay sprawled unnaturally on the rocky terrain Lyse was nowhere to be found. Levi reasoned that it had to be a good sign.

"Stay back!" He ordered to the team that looked like they wanted to come close.

Levi did not trust that the edge of the cliff would hold all their weights, he preferred to do it alone. He jumped down a scraggly edge and peered around.

As he looked around, trying to find her, he yelled her name. "Lyse!" He shouted, his voice echoing in the still air.

A faint, barely audible voice responded, "Help me, please help me, Levi..."

Hope surged through him. She was alive. He carefully edged closer to the cliff’s edge, his heart pounding with fear and relief. Lyse was still clinging to a small patch of undergrowth, her grip weak and her body limp. He could see that she could not hold on for much longer, he marveled at her tenacity.

Hold on, Lyse," he urged, his voice steady. "I’ve got you."

With a Herculean effort, he pulled her up, her limp body dangling from the cliff’s edge. Just as he was about to pull her to safety, a sharp pain shot through his arm. He had injured himself in the struggle with Max, but he ignored the pain, focusing solely on rescuing Lyse.

Finally, he managed to haul her onto the clifftop. She was barely, her breathing shallow. As he cradled Lyse in his arms, a surge of relief washed over him.

She was alive. She was safe and she was in his arms where he would never let her leave. She might be weak and disoriented, but she was alive. Levi carefully carried her back up the cliff, his arms trembling with exertion.

Alex and his team were waiting for him and when he resurfaced with Lyse, their faces etched with relief. They quickly assessed the situation, tending to Levi’s wound and stabilizing Lyse.

Then after, Levi insisted on carrying her to the car and holding her hand through the entire ride back to the house. He declined going to the hospital because he did not want anyone finding out anything that had happened in the past couple of days.

If the press got wind of it, they would swarm the whole place and he did not want Lyse dealing with that.

When they got home, the doctor, a kind and compassionate woman name Ellen was already waiting for them. She examined Lyse carefully and determined that Lyse had been drugged, likely with a powerful animal tranquilizer. The drug, combined with the trauma of her ordeal, had weakened her system. However, with proper care, she would recover and very soon too.

Levi, on the other hand, was treated for his gunshot wound. It was just a flesh wound, thankfully, and it would heal without any lasting damage.

After he had made sure that Alex was taking care of Max and any signs of the struggle that had happened on that cliff, Levi returned to Lyse’s side and stayed there. As he watched over Lyse, his heart filled with gratitude. She had survived, against all odds.

There was a feeling that he could not explain, it had risen thanks to almost losing Lyse and he realized that she actually meant a lot to him. He could not afford to lose her, if something like that happened the worry would simply kill him.

By the next day, Lyse was already slowly regaining her strength, her spirit gradually returning and her dull skin glowing.

When she opened her eyes and saw Levi with a bandage around his arm, she realized that all that had happened had not just been a bad dream. Max had actually kidnapped and tried to kill her but Levi had come to her rescue.

"I thought you were not going to look for me, I thought I was going to die." Lyse said, her eyes brimming with tears.

Levi gently rubbed the top of her head, a movement that felt so soothing that Lyse wanted to lean into his touch and purr like a cat.

"Why would you think that?" He asked softly.

Max had told her that no one was looking for her and she had believed it. She had spent so long being neglected by her family and struggling all on her own that she never expected anyone to look out for her.

"Because I’m not your real wife." She whispered.

Levi held her gaze and almost told her at that moment that they were really married, that she was his wife and he would die before he let anything hurt her but instead he leaned down and kissed her forehead.

"You are safe now." He said, "and I won’t let anything hurt you ever again."

Levi remained by her side every step of the way, offering comfort and support even though there was a nurse who had been employed to take care of Lyse. He decided that it was time for a well deserved holiday and stayed at home with her instead of going to work.

They talked for hours, sharing their fears, their hopes, and their dreams. Their bond deepened, and Levi realized that the feelings he had for her were growing stronger with each passing day.

As Lyse recovered, she began to confront the trauma of her ordeal. She had been through hell, but she had also emerged stronger, more resilient. She knew that she had been given a second chance at life, and she was determined to make the most of it.

She wondered how Janine would take the news that Max had kidnapped her and almost killed her and eventually died eventually. She knew that despite how badly Max had treated Janine, she still loved him very much and would not take the news well so she decided not to say anything.
