Chapter 53: Suspicious

"The ones I received today." Lyse answered, her brow furrowed in confusion.

Levi dropped his cutlery and looked at her, "Did the flowers I sent yesterday already dry up? Did you want me to send you flowers everyday?"

"No, that’s not it." Lyse said calmly even though under the surface she was in a panic because if he did not send the flowers then which husband sent it?

"Okay, why then would you think that I sent you flowers?" Levi asked.

She stared at him for a long moment, thinking. Then she said quickly. "The flowers were really elaborate and expensive looking so I assumed that it was yours. They probably came from one of my vendors or stores that want to collaborate."

Levi looked at her, clearly not entirely convinced by the reason she had given. "Did they not include a note?" He asked.

"I did not find a note, I am sure it got lost while being delivered." Lyse said and started to eat in a bid to get off the topic.

Levi however was still staring at her, studying her as she ate nervously.

Feeling his eyes on her, Lyse looked up and blurted out the first thing that came to her mind. "Uhm i don’t think that I need Joel to go around with me all the time."

"I don’t think that is a good idea." Levi frowned, "That mad man Max has still not be caught, you can’t be out without any protection."

Lyse waved his concern away. "Max is a coward, he has probably gone far away from the city after he was almost caught and knowing that the police have a warrant out for him he will not return."

When Levi did not look convinced, she continued. "I was taking care of myself well before you came into the picture."

"Fine." Levi said at last.

While Lyse smiled triumphantly he made a note to inform Joel to follow her but make sure to stay out of sight. He wondered if her wanting to get rid of her bodyguard had something to do with the flowers she thought had come from him.

Whatever it was, she was acting suspicious.

The next morning, Lyse headed to a coffee shop which she used to frequent with James and immediately she opened the door, she caught sight of him already seated at their favorite booth.

After they hugged and had their orders placed, James looked expectantly at Lyse.

"What did you drag me out so early for, it sounded so important." James said as he looked at her then his eyes widened, "Are you pregnant?"

"What? No!" Lyse whispered and looked around to be sure no one was listening to them, "Why would you think that?"

"Well, because over a month ago you woke up in a stranger’s bed."

"I am not pregnant!" Lyse said through gritted teeth.

"Then what is it?"

Lyse swallowed nervously then leaned closer to James. "I think the person I got married to might be sending me flowers."

James’s jaw dropped immediately, "No way!" He breathed.

Lyse exhaled then looked through her purse and pulled out the note which had accompanied the flowers.

"I got this yesterday at my office." She said as she handed the note to James.

He read it then his eyes found Lyse’s worried face. He tried to reassure her saying, "Maybe it was Levi who sent it to you."

"I asked him already." Lyse said, near tears, "He said he was not the one who sent it. Who else would send me flowers and say that they are my husband?"

James sat quietly, struck dumb at the turn of events.

"Did he leave a number or anything? What do you think he wants?" He asked at last.

"I don’t know what he wants James, no one has contacted me yet." Lyse said, "I’m scared of what would happen if Levi were to find out."

Lyse was not worried for herself, she worried that Levi could be vindictive enough to carry out his threat against the women’s shelter and she could not have that happen.

"Calm down, nothing like that is going to happen." James reached out and held her hand reassuringly. "We just have to find out who this person is, we should probably sue them for taking advantage of you when you were vulnerable."

Lyse sat up and raised hopeful eyes at him, "You think so?"

James looked certain for a moment then his face fell. "I’m not sure, i don’t know if that would be contained in the parameters of the law but what is important is that we find him first."

Lyse slumped back in her seat woefully. Thinking about the scandal that was sure to come gave her a headache.

"I will get a private investigator and we will find him, don’t you worry about it." James assured her.

"Who are we going to convince to call her?" Brooke asked.

"We can use one of those voice apps, mask our voice so she won’t know who is talking." Lottie said confidently.

Brooke looked at her for a moment then said, "remind me again, what exactly is the point of this call?"

"We need to find out who Lyse married, if we find him then we can convince him to help us humiliate her." Lottie said impatiently.

Recognition dawned in Brooke’s eyes and she smiled maniacally. "That does make a lot of sense."

"Of course it does. She must have gotten the flowers and is probably panicking, when she gets a call she will probably call his name and we will know everything we need to know."

Brooke kept smiling then her lips turned upside down in a frown. "What if she has already spoken to him and he has told her that he did not send the flowers?" She asked.

"It won’t matter." Lottie assured her, "She is still going to call his name if we say that it’s her husband who is not Levi."

Brooke looked admiringly at her. "You are so brilliant Lottie, i don’t know what I would do without you."
