Chapter 46: Disposable Wife

Chapter 46: Disposable Wife

That night the dinner party was in full swing, the grand ballroom abuzz with chatter and laughter from invited guests. Lyse, dressed in a stunning silver mermaid gown, moved gracefully through the crowd, her hand resting lightly on Levi’s arm.

Together they made a very beautiful couple and a lot of the guests could not take their eyes off them but she in particular was the center of attention, the new Mrs. Van Doren.

Everyone wanted to know all about her and she was thankful for Levi’s presence by her side. He fielded the questions and led her away when people probed too much.

As they mingled with the guests, Lyse noticed that she did not see any of the girls from earlier at the coffee shop and she wondered if Laurie had something to do with that. She could have taken them on but she was glad that she did not have to deal with some catty women who were jealous.

However, she could not shake the feeling that she was being watched. She glanced around the room, but could not pinpoint the source of her unease. Then, her eyes fell upon a blonde woman standing by the drinks table. She was tall, with striking features and a confident air.

As Lyse wondered what the woman wanted, she approached them with a forced smile. "Levi, darling," she purred, her gaze lingering on Lyse. "You look absolutely stunning. And I must say, your taste just keeps improving."

"Thank you Anya." Levi said then pulled Lyse closer and Lyse saw as Anya’s eyes dropped to Lyse’s waist where Levi’s arm rested territorially. "This is my wife Lyse."

Anya, looked up at Lyse with a forced smile and her tone condescending. "Well, well, well," she drawled. "If it isn’t the new Mrs. Van Doren. You’re quite a catch, Levi."

Lyse maintained her composure, offered a polite smile. "Thank you, Anya. It is a pleasure to meet you."

Anya’s smile turned into a smirk. "I must say, I never expected that I would see the day that you would settle down. You know, he has always been such a ladies man."

Before Lyse could respond, Anya turned her attention to Levi. "Do you remember that time we went to that family restaurant in Sicily? The one by the mountains with the delicious goats cheese?"

Levi’s face hardened slightly. "Yes, I remember."

Anya laughed. "I do too. It was quite a night." She paused, her eyes fixed on Lyse. "I wonder if Lyse would enjoy hearing about it."

Lyse felt a surge of anger coursing through her veins. She knew what Anya was trying to do. She was trying to humiliate her, in order to make her feel insecure. But Lyse would not let her. She was about to tell her where she could shove the goats cheese when Levi started to speak.

"Anya," Levi said, his voice stern. "That is enough."

Anya ignored him. "Oh, come on, Levi. Don’t be such a spoilsport. Let us have some fun, I’m sure that Lyse would love to hear all about our trips" she continued provocatively

At that instant, Lyse was sure that this woman and Levi had had some fling or something of the sort. She however, had other plans. She looked squarely at Anya and said, "Anya, I am sure you have many wonderful stories to tell. But I am afraid I’m not interested."

With that, she took Levi’s arm and walked away, leaving Anya fuming. She had underestimated Lyse, and now she would pay the price.

At one point later that evening, Anya came to Lyse’s side and tried to spill a drink on Lyse’s dress, but Lyse deftly dodged the attack, causing the drink to spill on Anya instead. The guests gasped, and Anya’s face turned red with embarrassment.

Lyse, ever the gracious host, offered Anya a handkerchief and a sympathetic smile. "Accidents do happen." she said, her voice soft then she added, lowering her voice so that only Anya could hear. "You just have to be very careful who you target."

Anya, feeling humiliated, stormed off, leaving Lyse to navigate the rest of the evening. Despite the incident, Lyse remained composed, charming the guests with her wit and grace. By the end of the night, it was clear that she had won over the hearts of the Van Doren family and most their friends.

When Levi took Lyse to the dance floor and pulled her close in his arms he said to her. "You handled that situation beautifully," he said, his eyes filled with admiration. "I am so proud of you."

Lyse looked at him with a bitter smile. "I am glad you approve, Levi. Maybe next time you would be kind enough to point out your lovers before they try to plunge a knife in my back."

As Levi was about to speak, the music came to an end and people clapped. Lyse took that opportunity to step away from Levi and walk away.

She was mad at him and it was because of Anya. The proprietary way she had spoken about her time traveling with Levi irritated her.

’How disgusting is a man without any morals, i bet he has a lover lurking in every corner.’

She told herself that the reason she was so upset was because the women bothered her but she knew that if she examined the situation deeply she might find that she had a different reason for being annoyed.

It could be because those women actually had a chance to be with him. She was just the disposable wife, the item he would get rid of when he had accomplished whatever it was he had gotten a wife for.

People like her did not last in circles like this. He would actually be more suited to being with a woman such as Anya. Life was not a fairytale where the Prince Charming fell in love with the unexpected girl.

As she walked out to the side so that she could get some air she ran into a cute old lady who was standing on the balcony and she turned and stared at Lyse with a puzzled expression before a grin appeared, almost splitting her face into two.

"Maeve dear, is that you?" The old lady said. "I kept telling them that you would return."
