Chapter 32: No Interest In His Money

Lyse sat across from Chris, her expression resolute. The post-nuptial agreement lay between them, a stark reminder of the power imbalance. It represented the chains which would bind her to Levi and pretty and studded with diamonds as they might be, but chains were still chains.

"Are there any more things that you would need me to explain for you or are you satisfied and ready to sign?" Chris asked.

Lyse pushed the document across the table to him and shook her head. "I have made a decision." She said and Chris looked expectantly at her. "I have no intention to continue with this contract."

Chris was shocked by her answer. He had expected something else, her demanding for more money, her asking for less time, maybe even a house in some other country. Anything but her refusing to sign and he felt like he might not have heard well.

"I’m sorry, i don’t think I understand you." He said, confusion in his eyes.

"I will not be signing it because i don’t want to be Mr Van Doren’s fake wife." She clarified firmly.

Chris stared at her as if she had suddenly sprouted a second head. It was shocking to him that she was given a blank cheque and she was just going to turn it down.

"If there is something you want amended or you want more, just tell me and you can have it." He assured her.

"You don’t understand me." Lyse said patiently. "There is nothing your client can offer me. I have no interest in his money."

With those words she rose from her seat and walked towards the small overnight case which was resting against one of the chairs. Chris had not seen it when he had come in but now he knew that Lyse was not saying no as a negotiating tactic but because she genuinely did not want to be married to Levi.

Levi is not going to like this one but

"Is there nothing that I can do to change your mind Ms Spade?" Chris persisted knowing that Levi would give him hell for letting Lyse walk away.

"No, thank you." Lyse insisted firmly, "I promise that I will pay back everything that Mr Van Doren has spent so far on me and I will be moving out of the apartment immediately. I will not remain beholden to him."

She raised a hand to Chris and shook him briefly before leaving him stunned in the room. A minute later Joel came into the room.

"Ms Lyse has insisted on leaving." He said.

"Let her go." Chris said with a sigh.

He packed the document into his briefcase and left the apartment, dreading the fact that he would have to go and explain to Levi that he had failed to get Lyse’s signature on the document.

Some minutes after he got to Levi’s office and was ushered in, Chris noticed with dismay that Levi seemed to be in a good mood and he hated to be the one that would ruin the mood since he had stopped Joel from calling him and telling him what had happened.

"So has she signed?" Levi asked expectantly.

"I have bad news." Chris said then watched as Levi’s face became serious as he leaned back in his seat.

"Go on." Levi urged Calmly.

"She refused to sign." He said uncomfortably, he hated to disappoint Levi. "I offered her more money, anything she wanted but she turned me down. Said she would pay you back."

The room went silent as Levi stared unseeing at Chris then he uttered slowly.

"She said that she would pay me back?"

"Yeah, the hospital bill, whatever it is that you might have spent on her."

To Chris’s surprise, Levi burst into uproarious laughter and kept laughing even in the face of Chris’s confusion.

When he was done laughing an unamused Chris asked, "That did not seem very funny to me."

"I expected her to say no."

Chris blinked in surprise, shocked that his highly competitive friend seemed so calm in the face of a rejection and he chuckled.

"You know, for a moment I was worried that you were going a little mad over this girl." A relieved Chris said. "So let me just go and draw up the annulment and prepare a settlement for her then."

"Why would you draw up and annulment?" Levi demanded, all traces of mirth wiped off his face.

"Huh?" Croaked Chris in confusion as he wondered what sort of rollercoaster day he was being forced to deal with.

"Lyse is going to be my wife, I am not letting her go so quickly." Levi said coldly and Chris sighed.

"But you said—"

"I said that I knew that she would not agree to sign but don’t worry she will come around eventually." Levi said with a confidence that sent a chill down Chris’s back.

Poor girl, she does not have an idea what she is in for.’

"Anyway, enough about that, do you want to come with me to Brownley next weekend?"

Brownley was the estate where both Levi and Chris had grown up in, Levi’s ancestral home. Chris’s mother had been the estate manager and they had grown up together more like brothers than the son of the owner and the son of the staff.

"I will be going last minute so I probably won’t be able to go with you." Chris said, "How do you think your mom is going to react?"

"It will just be more of the same, her complaining about the fact that she does not see me often even though we both know that she is much too busy to entertain me and probably more complaints about grandchildren."

"Are you going to grant her wish at last?" Chris asked curiously.

"Maybe I could convince Lyse to have a couple of kids or more, that should satisfy my mother don’t you think?" He asked, an impish smile on his face.

Chris simply shook his head in exasperation and hoped for good luck for Lyse, she was going to need it.
