Chapter 242: It Seemed There Was Something Else
The evening air, usually a welcome respite after a long day at work, crackled with an unsettling energy. Lyse, weary from a demanding design session, pulled her car into the familiar parking spot outside her apartment building. As she stepped out, a blinding flash of light momentarily disoriented her. Then, a cacophony of voices erupted, a chaotic barrage of questions and shouts.
"Lyse! Over here!"
"Is it true you’re having an affair with Ken Stuart?"
"What is your relationship with the celebrity philanthropist?"
Lyse’s heart pounded in her chest. She was surrounded by a swarm of paparazzi, their cameras flashing, their microphones thrust towards her. She was bewildered, confused, and slightly panicked. She was sick of always being in the spotlight. It seemed like every other day she had to deal with something like this before.
"What’s going on?" she stammered, her voice barely audible above the din. She tried to push her way through the crowd, but they were relentless, their questions growing more insistent, more invasive.
Suddenly, a sleek, black Bentley pulled up to the curb, its tinted windows offering a momentary shield from the chaos. The rear door opened, and Bella stepped out, her expression a mixture of concern and determination. She moved swiftly with a bodyguard by her side, her presence a calming force amidst the frenzy.
"Lyse, get in," she said, her voice firm and clear. She grabbed Lyse’s arm and pulled her towards the car, while the bodyguard shielded them both from the flashing cameras and intrusive questions.
Lyse, still reeling from the sudden onslaught, gratefully accepted Bella’s assistance. She slid into the plush leather seat, the door closing behind her, shutting out the chaos of the outside world.
"What is happening, Bella?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. "Why are they...?"
"I will explain everything soon," Bella said, her voice reassuring. "We just need to get you out of here."
The Bentley sped away, leaving the paparazzi behind. Lyse sat in silence, her mind racing, her confusion growing. She had no idea what was going on, but she instinctively trusted Bella. She knew that Bella wouldn’t lead her astray.
The car pulled up to a grand hotel, its side entrance shielded from the prying eyes of the public. Bella led Lyse through a private entrance, bypassing the bustling lobby and the waiting paparazzi. They took a private elevator to the luxurious penthouse suite, its opulent decor a stark contrast to the chaos they had just left behind.
"Okay," Lyse said, her voice firm, "I want to know what’s going on. Now."
Bella nodded, her expression serious. "It’s about Ken," she said, her voice low. "His girlfriend, Felicity, has been talking to the press."
Lyse’s eyebrows furrowed. "Talking about what?" she asked, her confusion evident.
"Well, about you," Bella said, her voice laced with a hint of exasperation. "She has been insinuating that you and Ken are having an affair."
Lyse’s eyes widened in disbelief and she looked from Bella to Ken. "An affair?" she echoed, her voice incredulous. "That is ridiculous! Ken is just a friend."
"I know that," Bella said, her voice reassuring. "And Ken knows that. But Felicity... she is jealous and a little crazy to be honest. And she has been using the press to try and get back at him since he broke up with her."
At that moment Ken walked into the room, his face showing the strain of dealing with the press. "Lyse, I am so sorry about this." He said, his voice full of remorse.
"Ken, what is going on?" Lyse asked, her voice filled with a mixture of anger and confusion.
"Felicity, my ex-girlfriend, has been talking to the press. She is claiming we had an affair." Ken explained, his voice heavy. "She is trying to hurt me, and unfortunately, she’s dragging you into it."
Lyse was exasperated. She could not believe this level of pettiness. "This is insane." She said, shaking her head. "Why would she do this? What does this have to do with me?"
"She has always been extremely jealous," Ken said, his voice laced with frustration. "She’s always been insecure. But I never thought that she would go this far."
"And now," Bella added, her voice laced with a hint of resignation, "the press is having a field day. They are camped outside your apartment, outside your office, outside the hotel... they are everywhere."
Lyse groaned and pinched the bridge of her nose, her shoulders slumping. She couldn’t believe the situation she had been thrust into once again. She had never sought the spotlight, had never craved the attention of the media. Now, she was being dragged into a tabloid scandal every other day, her reputation tarnished by one baseless accusation to the next.
"What are we going to do?" she asked, her voice laced with a hint of desperation. "How are we going to stop this? I don’t need this kind of stress."
"We are going to issue a statement," Bella said, her voice firm. "We are going to set the record straight. We’re going to make it clear that there’s no truth to these allegations."
"And we’re going to protect you, Lyse," Ken added, his voice filled with sincerity. "We’re not going to let Felicity ruin your life."
Lyse nodded, her eyes filled with gratitude. She knew that she could trust Ken and Bella. They would help her navigate this difficult situation. Even though Ken was the cause of the problem. She thought and pursed her lips. If she had not gotten involved with him in the first place, this would not be a problem.
"Thank you," she said, her voice barely audible. "I really hope that it will be effective because I hate to have my life as fodder for the public."
"We’re in this together, Lyse," Bella said, her smile warm and reassuring. "We’ll get through this."
Ken nodded, his eyes filled with a mixture of determination and remorse. "We will," he said. "And we’ll make sure that Felicity pays for what she has done."
Lyse noticed that Ken and Bella exchanged wary glances and her anxiety heightened. It seemed there was something else.
