Chapter 211: Until Lyse Was Ground Into Dust
Brooke reclined on her plush velvet chaise lounge, a glass of chilled champagne sparkling in her hand, because in her opinion the occasion deserved celebration. The glow from her laptop screen illuminated her face, reflecting the gleeful malice dancing in her eyes and she wished that she could see Lyse crumbled up and broken. She had waited so long to punish her and now that it was here, she could hardly believe it.
She had been replaying the disastrous press conference for the past hour, each viewing even more satisfying than the last. Everytime she played the video, there was another funnier, more humiliating angle she had not seen prior.
Lyse, the picture of composure and polished perfection, had been utterly dismantled. The reporter’s relentless questioning had chipped away at her carefully constructed facade, revealing the cracks beneath. Brooke savored every stumble, every stammer, every flicker of panic that crossed Lyse’s face. It was a masterpiece of public humiliation, and Brooke was the conductor of this symphony of destruction.
She scrolled through the comments section, a wide smile spreading across her face. The internet, as it so often did, had risen to the occasion. Lyse had been the brilliant darling on everybody’s lips and now they did not have enough scorn for her.
"Lyse Van Doren is a fraud!" one comment screamed. "I knew she was too good to be true," another chimed in. "If Levi needs someone to soothe his broken heart, I’m here for him. Lyse never deserved him." Another comment popped up. "I just knew she was nothing but a scheming whore." Said another comment.
The virtual mob was baying for blood, and Brooke was reveling in the chaos. She imagined Lyse curled up in a ball, her carefully curated world crumbling around her. The thought brought a wave of pure, unadulterated pleasure. Now, finally, the diamond was showing the world a flaw, and Brooke was determined to exploit it to its fullest.
She had already prepared for a press conference later in the evening where she would renounce Lyse and tell the world that their angelic princess was nothing more than a lying fraud.
She took a sip of her champagne, the bubbles tickling her nose. This was it, she thought. This was the beginning of the end for Lyse. Levi, surely, could not stand by her after this humiliating fiasco. He was a man of impeccable reputation, obsessed with appearances. The scandal would be too much for him to bear. He would quickly dump Lyse, just as Brooke had predicted that he would. And then, finally, Lyse would have no one to protect her. She would be back in the gutters where she belonged with the rats.
But as Brooke refreshed the page, a flicker of unease crept into her triumphant reverie. The comments section seemed... thinner. Where were the scathing remarks, the witty insults, the calls for Lyse’s head? She sat up, leaning closer to the screen as she scrolled further down, her heart beginning to pound in her chest. Many of the most damning comments had vanished, replaced by generic, bland platitudes.
"What the...?" she muttered, her fingers flying across the keyboard. She clicked on the video link, expecting to relive Lyse’s public crucifixion. But instead of the press conference, a message flashed on the screen: "This video has been removed due to a copyright claim."
Brooke’s blood ran cold. She tried another link, and then another. She even switched off her laptop and put it on. But the same message appeared each time. The videos were gone. Wiped from the face of the internet as if they had never even existed in the first place.
A wave of fury washed over her. This could not be happening, not now when she was finally having a good laugh. It was too perfect, too delicious, to be snatched away at the last moment. She had not even enjoyed Lyse humiliation for one day. She knew, with a chilling certainty, who was behind this. Levi, it had to be him. He was the only one with the kind of power, the influence, to erase the internet’s collective memory. He was protecting Lyse, shielding her from the consequences of her own actions.
But why would he do that when Lyse had lied to him and brought public humiliation to him. Did he love her so much that he was willing to be a cuckhold?
Brooke slammed her laptop shut, the sound echoing in the silent room. Her carefully constructed fantasy of Lyse’s downfall was crumbling before her eyes. She had been so close, so close to finally seeing Lyse stripped of her pedestal, exposed for the flawed, vulnerable human being she truly was. And now, Levi had intervened, sweeping in like a knight in shining armor to rescue his damsel in distress.
Disappointment gnawed at her, a bitter pill she could not swallow. She had expected Levi to react with disgust, to distance himself from the scandal. But instead, he was doubling down, proving his loyalty to Lyse in the most dramatic way possible. It was infuriating. It was a slap in the face. It was a declaration of war.
Brooke paced the room, her mind racing. She had to do something. She could not keep letting Lyse get away with these. She couldn’t let Levi protect her. The thought of Levi surviving this attempt, unscathed, was unbearable. She had to make sure that Lyse paid for what she had done to her, that she suffered the consequences of her lies.
But how? Levi had just demonstrated the extent of his power. He could silence the internet, erase evidence, control the narrative. He was a force to be reckoned with, a formidable opponent. Brooke knew she couldn’t go toe-to-toe with him directly. She needed a different approach, a more subtle, more insidious strategy.
It did not occur to her for even one moment to drop her one sided battle against Lyse, in her opinion she had suffered too much to just let it go. She could not rest until Lyse was ground into the dust.
