Chapter 142: Hostile Inmate Faces

Levi sat in his home office, staring sightlessly at the windows, the flourishing garden that Lyse had tended so lovingly a stark contrast to the grim determination etched on his face. He was waiting for Ethan who he had summoned to his house.

Ethan was shown in by the butler. He enter, excited to be able to speak to his boss about all the new changes that were happening at the company. He knew about what had happened to Lyse and as much as he emphasized with her, he was more worried about his boss.

"Ethan," Levi began, his voice low and serious, "I need a favor."

Ethan, ever attentive, nodded. "Of course, Mr. Van Doren. What can I do for you?"

"I need you to arrange for Jeff Chadwick’s escape from prison," Levi said, his gaze fixed on Ethan.

Ethan’s brow furrowed slightly, for a moment he wondered if he had heard well. "Mr. Chadwick?" he repeated, his voice laced with surprise. "But... he was convicted of serious crimes. That would be... incredibly difficult to pull off."

He had come expecting that his boss had a strategy to reclaim his position, he did not care that Brandon was Levi’s son. He did not think it wise that Sutton’s son was in power, who knew what evil plan she had cooking in her head. Yet, here came his boss with an impossible task.

"I know," Levi interrupted, his voice firm. "But it necessary. It is what I want."

"I understand, Mr. Van Doren," he said. "But this is extremely risky. If we are caught..."

"I am well aware of the risks, Ethan," Levi said, his voice resolute. "But I am willing to take them. I need you to find a way to get him out. Discreetly. And as soon as possible."

"... Unless of course, this task is too much for you to handle." Levi said, with his eyebrow raised. "Have you lost your touch, Ethan?"

Ethan stiffened, his expression determined. "I will see what I can do, Mr. Sterling," he said. "I will contact my sources and get it done."

"I know that you will," Levi replied. "Just make sure to do your best."

For a moment, Levi considered asking Ethan to check on the men who had attacked Lyse, he had wondered if they had been waiting around purposefully for her but he chalked up his suspicions to be paranoia. It had probably been a coincidence, plus they would not still be hanging around the same place.

Meanwhile, within the harsh confines of the prison walls, Jeff Chadwick’s world had entirely crumbled. He had been returned to jail from the hospital after he got better and he was miserable.

He had been living in a constant state of fear, the weight of his past actions pressing down on him. He knew he had made mistakes, terrible mistakes that had caused immense suffering. But he had never imagined that the consequences would reach him in such a drastic manner.

He was in the prison’s common area, a tense and volatile space where rivalries and grudges festered. He was trying to keep to himself, avoiding eye contact with the other inmates, when he was approached by a man with a hardened face and a cold, calculating gaze.

"You are Jeff Chadwick, aren’t you?" the man asked, his voice low and menacing.

Jeff froze, his heart pounding in his chest. He did not recognize the man. But he could tell that there was no food that could come from him knowing his name.

"I- I don’t want any trouble." Jeff stammered, his voice trembling.

The man smile, a sinister smile that sent chills down Jeff’s spine. "What trouble? I just wanted to see you since you are something of a celebrity in my town. Do you know my town?" He asked in a voice that was deceptively pleasant.

Jeff gulped loudly, his eyes skirting around the room in search of help. But to his dismay he noticed that the guards did not seem concerned and there seemed to be more hostile inmate faces around.

"No." He whispered fearfully.

"The name of my town is Kudja.." the man said, speaking as if he was talking to a friend. Jeff’s face turned pale at the mention of the name.

"You know," the man chuckled. "Some people might even call Kudja a village, it is so little. Have you ever heard of it?"

When Jeff did not answer, the man continued. "My family lived in that town," he said, his voice lost its warmth and was laced with hatred. "They were not wealthy by any means, but the worked hard and they fed their families until one day a company came and started to dump their toxic waste in our swamp."

He leaned closer to Jeff, "Because of you, because of your company, the innocent people in my town lost everything. Their homes, their health... everything."

Jeff’s breath caught in his throat. He could see the anger in the man’s eyes, the burning desire for revenge. He knew that he was in danger.

Before he could react, some other inmates joined the man, their faces grim, their eyes filled with hatred. Jeff did not know, but they were from other towns, other families, all affected by Jeff’s company’s negligence and greed.

They surrounded him, their voices rising, their anger reaching a fever pitch. Jeff tried to defend himself, to explain, to apologize, but his words were lost in the roar of their rage.

The attack was brutal and swift. They punched and kicked him, their anger fueling their violence. Jeff fell to the ground, curling into a fetal position, trying to protect himself from the onslaught.

The fight was eventually broken up by the prison guards, but the damage was done. Jeff lay on the floor, his body battered and bruised, his breathing shallow and ragged. He was clinging to life by a thread.

Lottie was in a good mood as she prepared to visit Jeff, she knew that in no time Levi would get him out of jail. As she was on her way out of the house, her phone rang and when she answered, it was from the prison.
