Chapter 121: Why Don’t You Sue Me
Brooke hurried down the sterile hospital hallway, her footsteps echoing softly on the polished floor. She was reluctant to come but there was no one else to turn to. Brandon was not taking her calls and they were fast running out of money. Lyse had always been quite easy to manipulate, all she needed was to show her the littlest concern and Lyse would be putty in her hands.
As she rounded a corner, she stopped short, her eyes widening in surprise. Standing near Lyse’s room was Brandon on a phone call. She was stunned to see him there and she crept closer to him.
"Brandon?" she said, her voice laced with surprise and a hint of suspicion. "What are you doing here?"
Brandon turned, a forced smile spreading across his face. "Brooke," he said, his voice smooth and confident. "Fancy seeing you here."
Brooke narrowed her eyes, her suspicion growing. "I’m here to see Lyse," she said, her voice whiny. "What about you? Haven’t you seen my calls?"
Brandon’s smile widened, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Lyse and I are back together," he said, his voice laced with a smugness that made Brooke’s blood boil.
Brooke stared at him, her mind reeling. This couldn’t be true. Lyse was married to Levi. There was no way she would have taken Brandon back, not after what he had done.
"What are you talking about?" Brooke asked, her voice incredulous. "Lyse is married to Levi, and you are with me."
"I told you that is over." Brandon said as he stared at her with disgust in his eyes.
"Moreover, things change," he shrugged nonchalantly and smiled. "Lyse and I have reconciled. We are giving things another try."
Brooke’s anger began to simmer. She could not believe Brandon’s audacity, he thought that he would move from her to Lyse without a care? She would never allow it.
"You are lying," Brooke said, her voice sharp. "Lyse would never take you back after what you did and Levi would never permit it."
Brandon’s smile vanished, his expression turning cold and hard. "I wouldn’t be so sure about that," he said, his voice menacing. "Lyse needs me right now. And she has made it clear that she wants me in her life, not Levi."
"You made a promise to me." Brooke said, with her voice shaking. "And I bet Levi does not know what is happening, you are just a manipulative prick."
"That is none of your concern," Brandon said, his voice laced with warning. "Lyse and I are back together, and that’s all that matters. I suggest you stay out of our business."
"I won’t," Brooke said, her voice firm. "Lyse is my sister and I am not going to let you just move on from me just like that."
Brandon scoffed mockingly, "You did not know that she was your sister when you slipped into my bed and offered me your body."
"I will tell the world how disgusting you are!" Brooke spat in fury.
Brandon took a step closer to her, his eyes boring into hers. "I am warning you, Brooke," he said, his voice low and threatening. "Stay away from Lyse. Stay out of our relationship. If you know what’s good for you."
Brooke stood her ground, refusing to be intimidated. The thought of Brandon slipping through her fingers and worst of all, returning to Lyse did not sit with her. She could not sit back and take that.
"I will never let you get away with this," Brooke said, her voice resolute. "I will do whatever it takes to break up this unholy union."
Brandon’s face flushed with anger. He opened his mouth to retort, but then seemed to think better of it. He simply glared at Brooke for a moment, his eyes filled with hatred. "Just stay away," he repeated, his voice cold and hard. "Or you are going to regret it, I will make sure of it."
With that, he turned on his heel and stormed off down the hallway, leaving Brooke standing there, her heart pounding in her chest. She watched him go, her mind filled with anger at Lyse.
Something felt extremely fishy to her and she needed to find out what it was immediately. She made her way to the nurses station where fortunately there was only one nurse. Brooke approached her and spoke softly.
"My sister is admitted here and i don’t know what is wrong with her, could you tell me?"
The nurse looked up, her gaze hesitant and apologetic, "I am so sorry but patient’s information is confidential and I can’t just tell you anything."
Brooke looked around and when she was sure that there was no one looking in their direction, she leaned close to the nurse and whispered.
"If you help me, I will send you ten thousand dollars right now."
Brooke looked with satisfaction as the nurse’s eyes gleamed with greed, then she glanced around and whispered back.
"You will give me ten thousand?" She asked.
"Right after you give me the details, I will send you half and send the balance after you give me what I need." Brooke assured her.
The nurse greedily licked her lips and called out her account number and her eyes widened when she received five thousand in her account. Her gaze snapped up to Brooke’s who smiled encouragingly at her.
"Give me what I need and you get the rest immediately." She said.
The nurse smiled happily as she thought of what she could do with this unexpected windfall, sit was against her ethics but it did not take much for her to dump professional ethics for a little cash.
"What is the name of the patient?" The nurse asked.
After Brooke told her, she scurried off and came back not long after with a sheet of paper which she handed over to Brooke.
Brooke took the paper and looked through it, her eyes darkening as she read the information. Now Brandon’s actions made sense to her. She folded the piece of paper and slipped it in her bag and turned to leave when the nurse’s urgent voice stopped her.
"Aren’t you going to give me the balance?" She asked.
Brooke turned to her with a mocking smile and said, "why don’t you sue me?"
Then she walked away, leaving the flabbergasted nurse clenching her fists in frustration.
