Chapter 119: I Want Brandon
Chapter 119: I Want Brandon
The moment Lyse’s eyes fluttered open, Levi’s heart had soared. Relief, pure and unadulterated, washed over him, making his knees weak. But the joy was short-lived, replaced by a chilling unease that settled deep in his bones.
Lyse’s gaze, though open, held no recognition. Her eyes darted around the room, unfocused and filled with confusion, before finally settling on him. But the look she gave him was not one of familiarity, care or even anger. It was one of fear.
"Who... who are you?" she repeated, her voice trembling. She recoiled slightly, pulling her hand away from his.
Levi’s heart plummeted. He stared at her, his mind reeling, trying to comprehend what was happening.
"Lyse... it’s me," he said softly, his voice laced with confusion and a growing sense of dread. "It’s Levi."
He wondered if she was still hurt over the news that he was Brandon’s father. It had been the last thing on her mind when she got into that accident, he was saddened at the thought that it was the first thing on her mind after waking up.
Lyse’s brow furrowed, her eyes searching his face as if looking for something she couldn’t find. "Levi?" she repeated, the name sounding foreign on her lips. "I... I don’t know any Levi. What am I doing here?"
A cold dread gripped Levi’s chest. He felt like the ground had just dropped out from beneath him. This was not just disorientation from waking up from the coma. This was something else, something far more serious.
"Where is James? Why is Brandon not here?" Lyse asked, her voice filled with a childlike fear. "I want Brandon."
The name hit Levi like a physical blow. Brandon. Why did Lyse want to see the man who had betrayed her trust? The man who she could not stand to be in the same room.
"Lyse... Brandon..." Levi began, trying to find the right words to explain. But before he could continue, Lyse started to panic.
"I want Brandon!" she cried, her voice rising. "Where is he? I need him!" She tried to sit up, her movements jerky and agitated.
The sudden shift in her demeanor alerted the nurses, who rushed into the room. They quickly assessed the situation, their expressions turning grave.
"Sir, I am going to need you to step outside," one of the nurses said firmly, gently but firmly placing a hand on Levi’s arm.
"But... she doesn’t recognize me," Levi protested, his voice laced with desperation. "I need to explain..."
"We understand, sir," the nurse said, her voice sympathetic but firm. "But it’s important that we keep her calm. She has just woken up, and any sudden shocks could be detrimental to her recovery. It’s possible she is just experiencing some temporary memory loss or confusion due to the coma."
As it dawned on Levi what the nurse was saying and the possibility that the memory loss might not be temporary, two more doctors entered the room, their faces etched with concern. They quickly began examining Lyse, speaking to her in soothing tones.
"Sir, please," one of the doctors said to Levi who had refused to leave, his voice authoritative. "It is best if you step outside for now. We will talk to you once we have assessed her condition."
Levi reluctantly allowed himself to be ushered out of the room, his heart heavy with dread. He stood outside the door, his mind a whirlwind of fear and confusion.
He could not understand why this was happening. Why didn’t Lyse recognize him? Why was she asking for Brandon?
He paced the hallway, his anxiety growing with each passing minute. He felt like he was losing her all over again, but in a completely different way. He had feared losing her to the coma, but he had never imagined losing her memory, losing the connection that they had started to build.
After what felt like an eternity, one of the doctors emerged from the room. Levi rushed towards him, his heart pounding in his chest.
"How is she?" he asked, his voice trembling.
"She is stable," the doctor said, his expression grave. "But I’m afraid what she is experiencing is some significant memory loss. It is not uncommon after a prolonged coma. It seems she has reverted back to a time before you were in her life. She remembers her relationship with... Brandon but nothing about you."
Levi’s heart sank. "What does this mean?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.
"It is difficult to say at this point," the doctor replied. "Memory loss can be unpredictable. It is possible her memories will return with time, but there is no guarantee. We are going to need to run some more tests and monitor her progress closely."
"What should I do?" Levi asked, his voice filled with desperation. "What can I do to make her better?"
"For now, it’s best if you give her some space," the doctor advised. "Seeing you, trying to explain who you are to her, could cause her further distress. It could even send her into shock. We need to avoid any unnecessary stress."
Levi nodded slowly, his mind reeling. He understood what the doctor was saying, but it was tearing him apart. He wanted to be there for Lyse, to hold her, to reassure her. But he also knew he could not risk hurting her further.
"We are going to need you to inform this Brandon the patient has been speaking of, that might help her gain a better sense of her surroundings." The doctor added, further breaking Levi’s heart.
He walked away from the room, his heart heavy with fear. He was terrified of losing Lyse, not to death, but to a past he could not reach, a past where he did not exist and they had never met.
He was afraid of becoming a stranger to the woman he loved more than anything in the world. The thought of losing her, in any way, was unbearable. He knew he had to be strong for her, but the fear that gnawed at him was almost overwhelming.
