Chapter 288: Chapter 284: Sacrificing to the Gods
Zheng Jing had been studying animal taming for quite a while now and had almost carved out a path for a Beast Tamer branch based on her Druid Profession.
Her animal conversation skills were even stronger than Mu Ying’s—she’d found another way to gain Professional Experience in the process of understanding and taming animals by engaging in long conversations with them and getting into their mindset, and she had some practical Experience with it as well.
The Jumping Rabbits, Little Running Bulls were all tamed by her; even the fiery-tempered Fire-breathing Chickens were subdued and no longer spewed fire everywhere.
Knowing that Zheng Jing had long coveted the Griffin Eggs, Mu Ying wanted to share the joy with her as soon as possible, so she took out the Dingling Flower with Zheng Jing’s tag to contact her.
The Dingling Flower did connect, but the other side was filled with noise.
Mu Ying, "Hello? Where are you now?"
Zheng Jing, "What? I can’t hear you clearly; hold on!"
After a minute, it quieted down a bit on the other end.
"I’m at the tavern watching an auction. Did you know? A Great Painter captured your battle scene from today, and it looks fantastic! It’s being auctioned right now! When I left, the bidding had already reached 10 copper coins!"
Listening to her, Mu Ying felt Zheng Jing’s voice was even more excited than she had been when sneaking out with the eggs. Zheng Jing added from the other end,
"Oh, and I heard that the Great Painter made two paintings. One is up for the auction, and he plans to give the other to you. He was just asking about how to contact you. Aren’t you coming to take a look?"
"No, I’m not! It would be so embarrassing!" Mu Ying immediately refused, but she was indeed quite curious and added, "Tell him there’s no need for him to gift it; I’ll buy it. Just use the price from the auction for this painting."
"Alright, I’ll go tell him right away!"
The flower bud drooped down, and the Dingling Flower call was disconnected.
In the dark night sky, Mu Ying blew on the cold wind, looked at the flower in her hand then back at the egg beside her and sighed.
How had she inadvertently been led astray?
It didn’t matter; it was time to check out the situation elsewhere. Zheng Jing would surely get back to her with results later.
She took out a bamboo basket padded with grass and placed the three Griffin Eggs into it.
Since the eggs were live beings, she didn’t dare put them in the Space Ring, so she placed them on the Magic Flying Carpet.
Following the traces of the Blood Crows’ activity, she flew northward, reaching the former location of Coastal City when she suddenly realized the Blood Crows seemed to have gone to the sea as well.
"Oh no, they haven’t gone and troubled the Fishmen, have they?"
Mu Ying flew toward the sea and, from a distance, indeed saw that the Fishmen were not sleeping as usual but burying bodies instead.
The Fishman Village was also in disarray, feathers of Blood Crows strewn everywhere.
However, judging by the number of Fishmen, the losses didn’t seem too severe; perhaps they could escape into the water.
This time she finally saw what was inside the jars in the middle of the altar.
Corpses.
They didn’t even spare their own deceased, stuffing them into the small jars, some mixed with the feathers and bodies of Blood Crows.
Then they buried the jars around the altar.
A Fishman wearing a long seaweed robe, holding a Fish Scale Coral Staff, stood on the altar, swinging from side to side in front of the Divine Statue, mumbling something, looking like they were performing a sort of ritualistic dance.
Despite the peculiar movements of this Fishman, it was the only one allowed on the altar, the only one that could get close to the Divine Statue. The other Fishmen, after burying the Corpse Jars, only dared to kneel far away and pray towards the Divine Statue.
It was clear that this Fishman was akin to the mermaids’ Priestess Granny.
The distance was too far to use Biological Recognition to discern its specific level.
But Mu Ying found the celebratory activity unsettling; she didn’t dare look directly at the Divine Statue, yet just from observing the ever more spirited and frenzied behavior of the Fishmen, she knew this ritual was up to no good.
I need to find a way to cause some sabotage.
It’s been a while since I last burned down a village, and my freshly mastered Fire Wall Skill hasn’t been used yet.
Seated on the Magic Flying Carpet, I floated to the skies above the edge of the Fishman Village.
Then I slowly began to descend, testing the range of the Fishmen’s Perception.
It didn’t take long for the Fishmen to realize something was amiss.
Although they still couldn’t see Mu Ying, they all simultaneously looked up and located her position.
"skdhiffe!"
It was another incomprehensible Language.
The Fishmen were thrown into chaos, each grabbing a Spear and running towards her.
She was still at a considerable height from the ground, and Mu Ying had already experienced the Fishmen’s spear-throwing prowess.
Even if these Fishmen were slightly stronger than the ones in the previous instances, their strength wasn’t significantly greater, so they couldn’t traverse such a tall distance to attack her.
However, she was also not yet within her own Spell Casting range.
After some probing, she estimated the distance and descended a bit more until she was within Spell Casting range before starting her Spell.
A long and thick wall of fire appeared out of nowhere inside the Fishman Village.
Even though the sandy beach was still moist and shallow seawater lingered, the wall of fire, conjured by the Spell, remained unaffected and quickly spread its flames.
This efficiency was much better and more effective than the previous village burnings.
She chose not to descend near the Altar to attack it, but instead she descended to a denser area a bit farther from the Altar to burn the village, partly out of wariness towards the Fishman Priest and the Divine Statue, and partly to avoid having her Fire Wall extinguished before it could achieve its intended purpose.
Considering the Mermaid Clan, which also belongs to the aquatic Race, even if the Fishmen had fewer Spellcasters, those dressed as Fishman Priests would at the very least know the Water Control Skill.
This place being close to the sea, if she got too close, her Fire Wall Skill would be extinguished by the waves drawn in by their Spells.
Her choice proved to be correct.
The Priest’s Spell Casting range wasn’t that far, and it was probably only halfway through its Sacrificial God Dance and didn’t want to stop halfway and abandon it.
So, it didn’t follow the rest of the Fishman lackeys in pursuit.
Mu Ying seized the opportunity and cast three Fire Wall Skills in a row, and the flames spread through half of the Mermaid Village.
By the time the Mermaid Priest finally couldn’t bear it any longer and left its God to rush over to put out the fire, Mu Ying had already commanded the Flying Carpet to fly high again, beyond its Spell Casting range.
As expected, the Priest knew the Water Control Skill. Waves surged more than ten meters high towards the flaming Mermaid Village, one after another, quickly extinguishing the flames.
However, after being scorched by the fire for a while, then battered by the waves a few times, the houses were no longer in good shape, and the stored fish inside were spoilt.
The Fishmen were enraged, clearly aware they couldn’t reach her, but they continued to curse from below and hurled spears one after the other.
Mu Ying, now seeing no opportunity for further attack, lost interest and planned to leave.
"dsidhisf!"
The Fishmen persisted in their curses while chasing her for hundreds of meters.
They only stopped when their skins started to feel dry.
Mu Ying was delighted by this; she loved seeing them hopping mad and helpless against her.
