Chapter 623: Chapter 423: A Mere Eunuch Dares to be Fierce!
Imperial City, drill ground.
This place was situated in the northern part of the Imperial City, expanding over several thousands of meters—truly an excellent location for a confrontation. Following Jingtai’s indication to Zhang Yantong, the latter immediately instructed someone to notify the other Divine Envoys.
No matter what, this battle was also about a leadership position in the Imperial City; the rest of the Divine Envoys needed to be aware. To oppose it was naturally out of the question.
After all, the Emperor’s word had been spoken, and no mistakes could be tolerated.
Of the other three Divine Envoys, only two arrived, with the Heavenly Divine Envoy, Xiao Jing, being the only one absent. The Earthly Divine Envoy, Zuo Tiancheng, and the Yellow Divine Envoy, Wu Tianxi, both came in person, eager to see for themselves what skills the Immortal Battle’s number one, Demon Sword Chen Yuan, truly possessed.
Zuo Tiancheng was dressed in a brown robe, his demeanor solemn and serious, sparing his words and smiles. Wu Tianxi, on the other hand, wore a smile on his face, gently stroking his beard as he whispered to Zhang Yantong:
“Brother Zhang, what on earth is going on?”
Although the Heavenly Patrol Bureau was rife with internal factions, under the pressure of the Imperial Supervision Bureau, they had set aside past disputes for the time being, at least outwardly they appeared quite united.
There were no severing of ties that would last till death.
Zhang Yantong’s eyes flickered as he discreetly glanced at Jingtai, who sat in the main seat, and subtly opened his mouth to transmit a message: “Previously, His Majesty had prepared….”
He recounted the day’s occurrences in full detail.
Wu Tianxi let out a cold huff:
“That Cao eunuch is truly pushing it too far!”
The vacant position of the Imperial City’s leader was within their Heavenly Patrol Bureau’s jurisdiction, but that old dog Cao actually wanted Yang Yuanqing to be appointed. Regrettably, he could only curse under his breath.
They were well aware of who stood behind Cao Zhengxian and whose signal they had, otherwise Cao Zhengxian alone could not dream of encroaching on the Heavenly Patrol Bureau’s authority.
Did they, the four Divine Envoys, eat idle meals?
They just resented that the Great Governor was still in seclusion; otherwise, even if the Emperor wanted to push this matter through, it would have proven extremely difficult. A peerless True Monarch held a position few could match in the royal court.
“When the Great Governor exits his seclusion, we will make sure that eunuch understands what the true Heavenly Patrol Bureau is!”
“Chen Yuan is not bad.”
Upon hearing this, Zuo Tiancheng nodded slightly, his gaze shifting to a figure in the middle of the drill ground, his eyes reflecting some admiration. Regardless of everything else, just this display of blood and vigor alone was worthy of respect.
“Indeed not bad. Brother Zhang, why don’t you let me train this person? Name any condition you desire,” Wu Tianxi spoke lightly with a laugh.
“No need for that, Brother Wu, you best focus on your own affairs first.”
Such a promising talent—how could Zhang Yantong be willing to let him go to someone else? He was counting on Chen Yuan to win over Jiang He, placing high hopes on him.
Apart from the several Divine Envoys of the Heavenly Patrol Bureau, after some thought, Jingtai decided to call over a few princes and princesses as well, preparing to have them observe the battle.
Jingtai had nine sons and three daughters. While not all of them had reached their full potential, speaking fairly, there were still a few princes who had gained his favor.
For this reason, even after ruling for over thirty years, Jingtai had yet to establish the position of Crown Prince. Although officials from the Ministry of Rites frequently presented petitions, the matter of the Crown Prince was of such importance that he had not yet officially designated one.
This led to much speculation amongst the court officials and commoners alike.
“Your son pays his respects to Father Emperor!”
“Your son pays his respects to Father Emperor!”
Four figures bowed in salute, one princess and three princes, prompting the Divine Envoys and people like Cao Zhengxian to shift their attention to them. On the drill ground, Chen Yuan also turned his gaze thoughtfully. He did not recognize these royal children, but he had heard some rumors about them.
Princess Pingyang was accomplished in both literature and martial arts. It was said that if not for her being a woman, she would have the greatest hope of becoming the Crown Prince.
The Eldest Prince, Sima Qian, born to the Noble Consort, had some achievements in martial arts. It was rumored that he was close to the Core Realm and could have achieved Core Formation if not for the suppression of the nation’s destiny. Although he was a prince and not the Emperor, he too was somewhat constrained by the nation’s destiny, though not as severely as the Emperor.
The Second Prince, Sima You, born to the current Empress, had been taught by the Great Scholars of the Academy since childhood, known for his understanding of propriety and rumored to have the makings of a wise ruler.
The Fourth Prince, Sima Ke, was a full sibling to Princess Pingyang, also born to the Noble Consort. He had many supporters in the court and had dabbled in both literature and martial arts, but when compared to his two elder brothers, he did not stand out as much.
These were some of the most outstanding amongst Jingtai’s nine sons and three daughters. The other royals, either lived deep within the palace, were too young, or came from too humble origins, held very little power in the court and mostly relied on their elder brothers.
“Rise.”
Jingtai nodded slightly. The princes and the princess stood respectfully by his side, with the Eldest Prince, Sima Qian, on the left, and Princess Pingyang on the right.
“I invited you here today to show you that there are always higher skies beyond one sky, and people beyond men. Chen Yuan, barely past his twenties, has already earned a great reputation in the Jianghu, defeating all the heroes under the heavens to stand as number one. Your talents compared to his are as different as heaven and earth. In the future, you should aim to be like him.”
“We shall follow Your Majesty’s decree,” the Eldest Prince, Sima Qian, immediately agreed while bowing.
Princess Pingyang looked at Chen Yuan with a somewhat intense gaze. Clearly, she was not unfamiliar with this name; even in the Capital, his reputation was well-known.
He was regarded as the strongest among the younger generation.
The Second Prince, Sima You, remained calm with a smile on his lips, praising, “I have indeed heard of the name of Chen, the Green Envoy. Looking across the land, there are few who can compare.”
The Fourth Prince, Sima Ke, focused his gaze, his eyes roving over Chen Yuan’s figure, seemingly pondering something.
