Chapter 91: The Ritual of Five People
Chapter 91: The Ritual of Five People
Whoosh!
Bang!
The axe flew through the air at high speed and lodged itself into the trunk of a large tree, giving Lin a great opportunity to climb up it.
He grabbed onto the large branches, which resembled tangled webs, and skillfully climbed up them, going deeper and deeper inside, and then after some time, he reached the very top of the twenty-meter tree and looked at the world.
The dark sky was like a ceiling that covered the entire sky, and the small gray moon, which reflected the rays of the sun — a dim lamp, unable to light even half a room.
But that wasn’t the most amazing sight Lin saw.
What shocked him most was that the entire surface of the world was covered in large tall trees, several tens of meters high, stretching all the way to the horizon with no end!
They were like a woolen carpet!
Lin slightly frowned when he saw what he hadn’t expected. He thought this forest of large trees had a logical end that would connect it to other areas. But that turned out not to be the case.
They seemed endless.
"This complicates everything... If this forest were small, then finding the blue door would be a matter of time. But now, when the forest has no end, how do I find the door?"
Lin sighed and decided to just look around to try to spot something.
"Trees... Trees... A small hill... Wait! Isn’t that smoke?" Lin squinted and looked to his right to get a better look at the distant smoke.
It was gray and stretched far into the sky,
"That really is smoke... What’s it doing there? Did someone light a fire? Or is it once again an abandoned place where there’s only a campfire? Either way, I don’t have a clear direction to go. So going toward the smoke makes more sense than not going there."
Lin quickly made a decision and memorized the location of the fire, then slowly descended so as not to accidentally slip and fall, breaking a few bones.
"Looks like I won’t be leaving here anytime soon..." Lin shook his head and headed toward the smoke.
...
After covering a significant distance, which took several hours, Lin was still deep in the forest of tall trees, walking toward the smoke he had seen from the treetop.
"This place should already be very close," Lin muttered quietly and looked ahead to try to see the source of the smoke.
But he saw only large bushes and trees. And behind them — an orange light, indicating a burning fire!
Lin slowed his pace and began cautiously approaching the fire, holding his axe in hand, ready at any moment to split someone’s head!
As he got closer, Lin heard strange voices.
It was the language of the Magic World mixed with strange, harsh growling, as if added to produce a divine choir. But in reality, it sounded more like a regular person trying to mimic church priests in their prayers to God.
Naturally, it turned out terribly for them.
Lin carefully approached one of the large bushes and hid so as not to reveal himself immediately. Although he wasn’t afraid of what was happening ahead, he didn’t want to attract unnecessary trouble.
Lifting his head, Lin looked at what was happening in front of him.
About five strange people were standing and praying by a large fire, beside which were various stakes, with people impaled on them. Their facial expressions showed only despair and pain — it was hard to imagine what they had experienced in life.
The fire blazed fiercely and began burning the bodies impaled on the stakes at great speed!
"Is this some kind of ritual?" Lin immediately assumed and looked at the five people.
Each of these people looked rather hideous: their bodies were covered in bloody nodules connected by bulging bloody veins. Their eyes looked bestial, as if at any moment they could pounce on a random person and devour them!
One of the strange men raised both hands upward and began loudly speaking to the sky:
"Oh, Great Distortion! Accept our sacrifices for us! Give us strength. Give us power to show those aristocrats that commoners are worthy of attention too!"
Another strange man also opened his filthy mouth and said:
"Give me endless energy! Give me beautiful women! Let my sword stand for centuries!"
The others didn’t hesitate either and began voicing all kinds of human desires they wanted to come true:
"Give me money!"
"I want my own harem!"
"Power! Power! And only power! With power, I’ll get everything I wish for! From beautiful women to the world’s riches!"
Lin watched the actions of the strange men with a neutral expression. Then he sighed and decided to keep watching without thinking anything of it.
The five men continued begging the Distortion for various material riches until they felt a boiling sensation in their blood and a desire to tear someone to pieces!
"Distortion! Distortion! Distortion! It heard us! Energy! Energy! I feel it in my body!" The man who asked for energy began twitching erratically in all directions, somewhat resembling clumsy dancing.
"Power!!! I feel it!" One of the men grinned widely and jumped into the fire, beginning his transformation!
His body was covered in orange flames. He himself smiled and made strange movements, turning more and more into black coal.
The others began transforming too: someone nailed himself to the ground with several stakes and laughed hysterically, as if it was something funny. Another approached a tree and took out his "sword," starting to rub it against the bark with clear pleasure. Yet another walked up to one of the corpses, which had completely burned out, and began doing "that" with it.
In short, the scenes Lin saw were completely insane.
"How unusual..." Although Lin was a strong person by nature, even he was disgusted watching the actions of these men.
"Their desires have completely Distorted, making them unable to distinguish reality from illusion... They’ve almost become Distorted creatures. I think if they keep doing this, in a few hours they’ll fully transform into Distorted creatures, and then their desires should completely vanish," he reasoned.
"In any case, it’s better to leave this place before they notice me..."
Lin slowly stepped out of the thick bushes when he noticed a black puddle of strange substance ahead.
"Interesting," Lin began feeling growing anxiety and instantly turned around!
He saw the five strange men now looking at him with beastly gazes!
"Looks like I’ll be busy for a while," Lin said with complete calm, smiling as he looked at the five men and slowly raised his axe.
Whoosh!
"Attack!"
