Chapter 43: Theron’s Interrupted Confession!

Two Days Later...

Rin was no longer at peace. His peace ended after that night, and ever since then, he had a lot of things running through his mind, and Evan Vortellion was at the top of his list.

He sat stiffly at his clinic desk, tapping his pen against a folder like it was a stress ball.

Because today was the day. That bloody day.

The day he would have to go to the Duke’s mansion and "spend time" with Evan freaking Vortellion as his entertainer.

He rubbed his face in agony.

’Why does this world hate me? I just wanted to work, make money and die quietly of old age.’

"Ugh..." He groaned in frustration, leaning back in the chair with his eyes stuck on the ceiling. At least, he wasn’t working like the other nurses who were attending to a bunch of students.

Just then, the clinic door creaked open.

The air shifted immediately as all gazes turned to the door.

Theron walked in first, tall and elegant as ever.

Elna followed, practically glowing with pride as she waved at the other nurses who weren’t even greeting her.

They waved back, with fake smiles on their face but deep down, they wondered why she had returned. Instead of returning her greetings to her, they waved at Theron instead.

"Head doctor! Welcome back!"

"You look handsome as ever, head doctor!"

He smiled gently at them.

"Oh! Thank you," he got close to a bed. "How’s the patient doing?"

He was quick to divert his attention to the sick ones lying on the bed. Elna was still showing off her glowing skin to the other nurses. She even got closer to Rin and took his hand.

"Oh, Rin! I should thank you for rejecting the Head Doctor. If you hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have..." She paused, biting her finger as she turned to peep at him and then look back at Rin. "...enjoy five whole nights with him,"

Rin nodded, laughing nervously.

"Sure, anytime! Elna,"

She let go of his hand, frowning. That wasn’t what she was expecting. She thought Rin would feel sad for not spending those nights with Theron but he looked even happier.

’I’m glad I didn’t have my hole ravaged for five whole nights,’ he thought to himself. He snapped out of his thoughts and saw Elna walking away from him.

While she left, Theron was heading to his office.

Rin watched him walk closer and stiffen when he stopped at his desk.

"Assistant Rin." He called.

Rin braced himself. He thought for sure that after their last awkward encounter, Theron would want nothing to do with him.

But...

"I’m glad to see you again."

Rin lifted his head to meet Theron’s gaze and saw the warm smile on his face.

Rin blinked.

"Y-You are?"

"The Dean informed me you’ll be spending two weeks at the Duke’s mansion," Theron said.

Rin swallowed hard before responding.

"...Yeah."

He didn’t expect Theron to say that out loud and in front of everyone. Now they know that he’s going to be absent for two weeks. He wanted to keep it a secret and disappear.

The nurses heard everything and started whispering behind him.

"He’s going to live with the Duke? How is that possible?"

"It seems like the Vortellions want something with him. First, it was the young master, now the head of the family?"

"I’ll miss Rin..."

"Yeah! Me too. He was kind of like our pet Beta."

Rin pretended he didn’t hear that last one as he rolled his eyes.

Theron gave him a small nod.

"I shouldn’t have said that out loud. I thought they already knew about it,"

"It’s fine, sir" he said.

"Come with me. Let’s talk in my office."

Rin hesitated. Then stood up and followed.

Elna watched them go, her smile dropping slightly.

"What the hell does he see in that boring beta? I thought we would be closer after spending five nights together,"

She muttered.

But she overheard the nurses giggling.

"Since the head doctor is back, do you think we’ll get more of Professor Silas’s drama? I mean, everyone loves a messy triangle."

Elna narrowed her eyes. She clenched her fist and barked out, "Get back to work!"

They rushed back to what they were doing while she stood there.

"Professor Silas huh? The mad man of the academy... You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into, Rin."

.

.

In Theron’s office, Rin closed the door behind him and turned...

Only to be pulled into a tight hug.

"I missed you so much, Rin," Theron said quietly.

Rin froze.

"O-Oh... Uh. You did?"

He awkwardly slid out of Theron’s arms like a fish escaping a net.

"That’s... nice."

Theron gently touched Rin’s cheek.

"You’ve gotten thinner. That Lucien isn’t around to take care of you,"

"Please stop saying that." Rin sighed. "I’m fine. I’m a man and I can take care of myself."

Theron nodded.

"Of course. Forgive me. I’m just... happy to see you."

He walked to the desk and picked up a form.

"Still... Why would the Duke request you specifically for two weeks?"

Rin’s body stiffened again.

’Don’t say anything stupid.’

He bit the inside of his cheek and avoided Theron’s eyes. He couldn’t say he was going there to be an entertainer.

"...I don’t really know."

Theron studied his face, but his expression remained unreadable.

Still... Rin could feel the pressure from Theron’s glare.

"I see. Even the Dean has no idea." He said and stamped the letter, handing it over to Rin.

Rin took it and bowed.

"Thank you, Head Doctor,"

"I told you to call me Theron. Even if Lucien Vortellion tried to ruin whatever we had..." He paused and Rin was left wondering what they had between them. "Once he graduates from the academy, I can finally be with you, Rin. I think I’m in..."

"Well, um..." Rin immediately interrupted him, knowing what was coming after those words. "I should probably go finish packing so the duke won’t send his men to grab me,"

Theron didn’t stop him. He just smiled and took Rin’s hand.

"I’ll tell you something important when you return,"

Rin slipped his hand from Theron’s grip and nodded silently.

Something inside him didn’t want him to return. He already knows what Theron wanted to say to him. The kind of confessions he sees in drama. With or without Lucien’s presence, he wanted nothing to do with the side characters or main characters in the book. fre(e)webnove.l.c.om

Once he gets too attached to the side characters, they could get killed by the male leads. He refused to be responsible for the death of someone. Even if they were just characters, they were still human, just like him.

His main goal is to prevent the storyline from heading from a soft romance genre to a dark romance genre. If that happens, everything that happened to the female lead in the book would happen to him.

Theron just watched him go, standing there quietly.

Rin walked out of the office with a fake smile that didn’t reach his eyes.

’It’s just two weeks. All I have to do is survive it. I have to avoid angering the duke and never get claimed by him. Also, don’t be attractive enough to get thrown into his ’Game’,’

Rin prayed silently as he left the clinic with his bag.
