Chapter 1736: Chapter 174: The Flying Dragon Procession
Like thunderous proclamations, a voice resounded across the skies of Long Valley, inciting fury among the younger disciples of the Beast Taming Sect upon hearing such provocation.
Yet, when the elder generation of the Lin Clan heard these words, their brows instinctively furrowed, their heads filled with trepidation.
For the disciples of a certain era in the Lin Clan, this voice was truly unforgettable, no matter how they tried to forget it.
And isn’t this very individual supposed to be imprisoned in the Valley of Ten Thousand Tribulations, suffering punishment? Why then, does he demand they go out to meet him?
Regardless of the elders’ misunderstanding, the disciples of the Beast Taming Sect in Long Valley could hardly contain themselves, rallying companions and leading battle beasts to charge out.
In the Long Valley, myriad fierce beasts ascended to the sky, the majority of which were winged Dragon Beasts, rare species carrying Dragon Clan bloodlines.
As these fierce beasts soared and unfurled their wings, they could shroud the daylight, and the collective aura of the assembled beasts made the weaker creatures in the valley tremble with fear.
The Dragon Clan, nobility amongst scaly creatures, adept at commanding storms and clouds, when millions of battle beasts intermingled with true dragon blood exuded their aura, the heavens and earth changed color in awe.
Riding atop the Dragon Beasts, the Lin Clan disciples surveyed their surroundings and spotted a surging Evil Qi at the Flame Sky approaching Long Valley, likely the brazen individual who just made that outrageous declaration.
They want the Lin Clan to welcome them, do they? Let them get a good taste of the battle formation might of the great Lin Clan!
The Lin Clan disciples, steering their Dragon Beasts, formed into a mighty Dragon Battle Formation and advanced towards the Flame Sky. The formidable aura of this battle formation was enough to make even titled powerhouses quiver with fear.
The uninvited guest from the Flame Sky clearly noticed the assembling Dragon Beast Battle Formation but seemed unfazed, nodding continuously instead.
Seeing that the newcomer paid no heed to the intimidation of the battle formation, the incensed Lin Clan disciples synchronized their hand symbols, and the Dragon Beast Battle Formation accelerated once again.
Various colors of spiritual energy enveloped the Dragon Beasts and Lin Clan disciples like clothing, the trailing streamers leaving behind a multitude of vibrant streaks across the sky. The awe-inspiring battle formation, like a meteor falling into the earth’s embrace, was unstoppable in its might, and its target was the very madman from the Flame Sky.
As the Dragon Battle Formation rose and the dome was alight with rainbow brilliance, the target individual, Cao Lie, laughed heartily. Only such a grand scene was befitting of his triumphant return home, yet the young whelps of the Lin Clan still lacked the vision to recognize him at this distance. It was time for a lesson.
The Luyang Prison Warden took a step forward, and his figure flickered a hundred yards away. A few steps later, and he was but a mere ten-odd yards from the Dragon Battle Formation.
In such a scenario, it was too late for the disciples of the Beast Taming Sect to halt in their tracks, and any observer would expect the uninvited guest to meet his demise.
But the bizarre often happens in the most unexpected moments. Just as the madman seemed poised to perish in the maw of a dragon, suddenly the onrushing Dragon Battle Formation faltered as if the storm-taming dragons had lost their ability to fly.
Like a multi-hued stack of dominos suspended mid-air, with the leading battle dragons of the formation at the fore, they plummeted earthward in unison.
The hefty bodies fell like a deluge of boulders from the sky, pummeling the earth and raising clouds of dust. The successive booms sent the creatures of the Flame Sky scattering in fear, and the rising dust erased the rainbows from the heavens.
Once the dust settled, one could see that amidst the chaos, the fall of the Dragon Beasts oddly conformed to a peculiar pattern, forming two neat rows of craters extending towards Long Valley. A risen path was arched between the two rows of deep pits.
And along the sides of that elevated path lay Lin Clan disciples who could no longer drive their battle dragons, with winged dragons lying grounded, dragon horns buried in the dirt.
Cao Lie, with hands behind his back, walking along the risen path, was like a king inspecting his domain.
Without a doubt, this atmosphere was deliberately crafted by Cao Lie, his intention clear: to show the whole Lin Clan that the man they once saw as a disgrace has now made a triumphant return!
Foregoing the use of techniques reminiscent of shrinking the earth to an inch, Cao Lie set foot on firm ground, walking step by step towards the Peak of Dragon Valley.
And in the large pits indented on both sides, those looking up at the boisterous strides of the newcomer were the Lin Clan disciples with complex expressions on their faces.
If just now they thought a madman was provoking them, prompting them to spontaneously form an array to meet the challenge, now they only wished that the madman would not be too narrow-minded.
With the secret command that controls the Lin Clan’s highest authority over driving their battle beasts, along with the terrifying technique that influences thousands of heads, as well as this startling momentum.
All these attributes together, undoubtedly pointed to a senior of the Lin Clan, yet what was puzzling was Cao Lie’s appearance.
At present, nearly seventy percent of the disciples of the Lin Clan in Long Valley stood here, yet not one recognized the identity of the newcomer.
Hence, these disciples began to communicate with each other through whispered transmissions, little did they know that these exchanges, thought to be discreet, were already falling into Cao Lie’s ears.
The span of a hundred years was enough to turn seas into mulberry fields; the legends he left behind had long faded in the dust. It was only too normal that these young disciples, none over thirty or forty years old, did not recognize him.
Cao Lie had anticipated this and naturally there was no change in his emotions. Besides, his return to Long Valley this time was not for the sake of boosting his fame among the younger generation.
The grand avenue, buttressed by dragon beasts, was long, but it never reached as far as the horizon, and it seemed Cao Lie had his fill of walking the red carpet, disappearing just as he was about to reach the end of the welcoming driveway.
Cao Lie reappeared, now atop the Peak of Dragon Valley. The once imperious Luyang Prison Warden was standing in front of a large tree, respectfully crossing his hands in front and bowing deeply.
Before him was an old man in a red and green flower-coat, squatting with his back against a giant phoenix tree, legs spread apart; in front of him was a golden plate with a mound of peanuts and a fat-bellied wine jug, as well as a scatter of peanut shells on the ground.
The old man grabbed a plump peanut, snapped it open with a "pop" sound that emitted a crisp fragrance, flicked out the full peanut, and with a twist between his fingers, the skinned peanut automatically jumped into his mouth—a skill that seemed to have been specially trained.
As the old man munched "crunch crunch", he reached out for more peanuts from the pile, seemingly not noticing Cao Lie who appeared in front of him.
After consuming a dozen or so peanuts, the old man finally spoke up with a thick accent from nowhere: "You kid, if you’re back you’re back, why frighten the children? Look at those little dragon beasts, scared stiff, not even flapping anymore."
"Ancestor is right, it’s just that a wanderer gets a bit too excited upon returning home, it won’t happen again," Cao Lie replied.
Standing obediently by the old man’s side, Cao Lie bent even lower when he heard the remonstration.
If the jailers of Luyang City were here, they would never believe that this person was the warden they knew so well.
"Eh, you’ve made some progress, not bad at all," said the Flower-Coat Old Man, squinting and smiling as he proffered the golden plate: "Eat."
"Thank you, Ancestor."
Cao Lie knelt down very naturally, respectfully took the largest peanut from the pile, shelled it, peeled it, and chewed it in his mouth.
"No more for you, you don’t even know how to be polite, taking the biggest one!" The old man saw Cao Lie take the largest peanut and began to hide the golden plate behind his back, muttering to himself.
"If Ancestor does not bestow it, the child will not ask for it, but if granted, naturally he should pick the best," Cao Lie said with a laugh, throwing the shell of the unusually large peanut onto the ground, and then patted his chest and said with a laugh: "Besides, the child doesn’t take Ancestor’s big peanuts for nothing; this time coming back, I’ve brought some good stuff!"
