Chapter 1088 - Chapter 1088 Chapter Three Hundred and Eighty-Two Disaster
Chapter 1088: Chapter Three Hundred and Eighty-Two: Disaster Comes Through the Ears Chapter 1088: Chapter Three Hundred and Eighty-Two: Disaster Comes Through the Ears If someone had been looking down from the sky all this time, they would have noticed that this peddler always took routes through less crowded and secluded areas, moving toward the Lower City District with astonishing speed.
However, even this astonishing speed seemed somewhat too slow compared to the information transmitted by the law enforcement’s spirit formation.
When Brother Tian arrived at the alley of East Market, he felt as if he had fallen into an ice cave. Not only had the alley been sealed off by warriors of the Xiang Family Army, but all the residents had also been escorted away by law enforcement. Even more daunting was the sight of number thirty-three’s courtyard door in the East Market alley being kicked open, with its walls pushed down as well.
The rest of the residents of East Market had surrounded the alley so tightly that no one could pass through, especially since everybody knew that the small courtyard at number thirty-three belonged to Yun Tian, a local celebrity at East Market, and someone who had recently sold a secret recipe for removing smell and filth. Now, to see it raided by law enforcement in conjunction with the Xiang Family Army made everyone quite curious.
Holding his merchandise box, Brother Tian stood out not at all in the crowd; he even sold quite a few snacks like dried candied dates, preserved fruits, and dried persimmons.
While selling his goods, the peddler asked a burly man with a face full of horizontal scars with a smile, “Boss, what’s the deal with this alley, why even the officers of the Xiang Family Army are here, has there been some kind of serious murder?”
The burly man with horizontal scars was named Bai Gaoge, the third son of the Bai family from outside the city, and everyone in this part of East Market called him Lord Bai San.
Relying on his family’s legacy, Lord Bai San was uneducated and spent most of his days shouting commands, gathering idlers in taverns to drink and brag. Although he wasn’t respectable, he was truly someone with many connections and well-informed.
Moreover, this man had one prominent characteristic: he was indiscreet. A few flattering words or a little provocation was all it took for him to say just about anything.
Brother Tian had precisely targeted this trait, cozying up to him especially to pry some news out of Bai San’er’s mouth, the most important being the whereabouts of Tang Luo.
He knew very well that recently, Tang Luo had set all of Chaochang abuzz. If discovered, who knew how much turmoil it would cause!
Bai Gaoge, the big-mouthed, casually opened the sealed message the peddler had handed him and popped a piece into his mouth, casting a glance at the eager youngster before leisurely saying, “It’s more than just a murder case, it’s a huge scandal that could pierce the heavens. Young man, you shouldn’t ask about things you shouldn’t, remember the saying that disaster often comes from careless talk!”
“Oh, is that so? Then I won’t ask anymore!” the peddler retracted, looking scared and about to turn away, but was caught by Lord Bai San.
“Hey, hey, hey! Why are you so timid, young man? If you’re scared off just by that, how will you ever achieve great things in the future!?”
Bai Gaoge expressed his dissatisfaction, for at the moment, everyone was making wild guesses about the unclear situation. With just a casual remark from him, many eyes had already turned toward Lord Bai San.
If only the peddler would plead a bit more, he would talk incessantly, enjoying the adoring gazes of the crowd. Yet, this tactless peddler was scared off, really, what a timid creature!
The peddler he had caught looked pitiful: “Sir, wasn’t it you who just said that disaster comes from careless talk?”
“Ahem…there’s security in numbers,” Bai Gaoge patched up his statement, then cleared his throat and started talking, “Do you all know who used to live at number thirty-three in East Market alley?”
Like a travel-worn storyteller, Bai Gaoge narrated the legend of number thirty-three East Market alley, talking about the villagers from Jialan Village coming into the city, discussing how the Qingtian Gang had ruled East Market, and going on to the dissolution of Qingtian Gang under the new policies of Chaochang.
A few stories had gathered the attention of everyone around, and the more people paid attention, the more animated Bai Gaoge became as he spouted, “But do you really know who this notorious Boss Yun is? He’s none other than the Ghost Assassin, number one on the wanted list! My brother’s been serving in the Xiang Family Army, stationed at East Fourth Avenue, and he let me know earlier that this Boss Yun respects no law and daringly struck on New Year’s Eve, wiping out the entire households of two councillors from the Spirit Realm Council!”
The crowd burst into an uproar, with many righteous indignation.
Over the years, City Lord Yun Xiu, with the Spirit Realm Council, had scrapped countless efforts and issued many new policies to finally steer the chaotic Chaochang back to the right track.
The common people did not see any struggle over holy land or any devious schemes; they could only simply assume that the members of the Spirit Realm Council were all good people who cared deeply for their well-being.
So, when they heard that Yun Tian had assassinated two councillors, and what’s more, slaughtered entire households, some of the commoners who were unaware of Yun Tian’s circumstances immediately started cursing!
“This man truly deserves to die. I’ve always said that no good comes from gangsters. And the Qingtian Gang, pah!”
“The councillors are all such good people, and yet Yun Tian, this traitorous dog, could bring himself to strike them down, no better than a beast!”
The love and hate of the common people are forever so straightforward. Previously well-regarded in the East Market, Boss Yun became a rat that everyone wanted to hit after just a few words from Bai Gaoge.
As for Bai Gaoge himself, he seemed to greatly enjoy the pleasure of sharing this “exclusive intelligence” and said loudly, “Everyone, calm down. To root out this madman, and to protect the lives of the other councillors in the Upper City District, the Xiang Family Head has specifically asked Master Shaolin of the Yulin Pavilion to take action, laying down protective spells said to cover the entire Upper City District. After that, even if Yun Tian had the ability to reach the heavens, he wouldn’t be able to harm the nobles of the Upper City District anymore.”
“Just now, as you’ve seen, the soldiers from the Xiang Family Army took a man from the courtyard to the camp outside the city. It’s most likely that very Yun Tian indeed! Without this Ghost Assassin, the nobles of the Upper City District can finally feel completely safe!”
Amongst the cheers and laughter of the commoners, the peddler silently faded out of the crowd, feeling increasingly agitated inside.
He had just glimpsed through the crowd that the courtyard had been turned upside down; even the doors sealed with magic had been flung open, and the soldiers dressed in Xiang Family Army uniforms hadn’t left any inch of the courtyard or any item unchecked.
Even the corncobs had been packed into wooden boxes and carried away, let alone a living person.
He had thought Luo Tang could escape unscathed, but according to Bai Gaoge, when the Xiang Family Army surrounded the alleys at East Market, they must have taken Tang Luo with them!
“Usually so capable, always bragging about your Martial Arts Divinity, but when it really matters, you’re blind. It still takes Big Brother to come and save you!”
The peddler, hiding in the dark alley, muttered to himself. Seeing that all the residents around him were drawn by the commotion in the alley, he made a hand sign with one hand and opened the Spirit World Passage, planning to take a shortcut through the Spirit World Passage to intercept Tang Luo outside the city.
But as soon as he dove into the passage, Brother Tian’s heart skipped a beat, for he sensed movement within the Spirit World Passage.
Rolling sounds of “glug glug” arose as a wooden wheelchair moved from far to near, with a calm-faced Tang Luo sitting atop, speaking indifferently to the stunned peddler, “Had it not been for seeing you use the spirit seal once before, this would have been a disaster.”
