Chapter 604: Chapter 604: This Child Looks Like You
He Jingyao knew he should leave without hesitation.
After all, the child’s origins were too mysterious, and he wouldn’t disclose any information. Who knew who had placed the child by his side, and for what purpose?
But listening to his sobbing, He found himself unable to take that step.
The officer was still trying to calm the little guy down to no avail. The child wasn’t crying loudly, just whimpering, like an abandoned animal, which inexplicably pained He’s heart.
After a long while, he took a deep breath and, as if resigned to his fate, turned back to face him.
Because the officer was holding him, the little guy could barely look He in the eye.
His face streaked with tears, he was hiccuping and looked positively pitiful.
"Who sent you to find me, huh?" He Jingyao asked softly.
Xiaobao wiped away his tears, looking wronged, "I can’t say."
"Why can’t you say, huh?" He Jingyao asked patiently.
"...I’m not a bad person anyway." He seemed to know what He Jingyao was worried about, puffing his cheeks.
He Jingyao found it amusing and couldn’t help but laugh.
How old was this child? Of course, He didn’t believe the child could harm him, especially since it was very likely the little guy didn’t know anything.
But what was the purpose of the person who sent this child? What plans did they have in store? That was his concern.
However, no matter what, a child... what could he do to He? Was he supposed to be afraid?
Thinking this, he reached out to take the little guy from the officer, staring into his eyes, "Listen, my patience is limited, be good, okay?"
The little guy wrapped his arms around He’s neck, pleading pitifully, "I’ll be good, please don’t leave me behind."
"I won’t leave you behind until we find your parents," He Jingyao promised, patting his head.
He immediately turned his tears into a smile, hugging He tightly, "I knew you were the best."
He Jingyao gave him a look but said nothing, simply carrying him out of the police station.
...
Wanhe Qianfeng Garden.
Uncle Li was in the living room going over this month’s accounts when he saw his young master walk in with a child in his arms.
His eyes bulged and suddenly lit up excitedly as he stood up abruptly, "Young Master! Is this... is this little young master?"
"No," He Jingyao replied coldly, dousing Uncle Li’s hopes with those two words.
"Then..." Uncle Li hesitated, looking at the little boy in He Jingyao’s arms.
"Find out who this child is," He Jingyao instructed as he placed the little guy on the couch, "He’s been separated from his parents."
"I don’t have..." the little guy replied softly, clinging to He Jingyao’s hand, not willing to let go, "don’t look for them."
He Jingyao looked down at him, then at his hands that were gripping his own. The little guy had soft, tender hands with two little dimples on the back that made one want to bite them.
"You promised to be good, didn’t you?" He Jingyao looked at him.
The little guy pursed his lips but eventually let go.
Uncle Li approached, examining the child, before exclaiming in surprise, "Young Master, don’t you think this child looks like you?"
The little guy’s eyes widened as he looked from Uncle Li to He Jingyao.
But He Jingyao spared a glance at the little guy’s chubby face, "Like me? Uncle Li, you need to see an ophthalmologist."
Uncle Li regretted, "How could he not be..."
