Chapter 583: Chapter 583: Since You’re Here, Don’t Think About Leaving Easily
As evening fell in winter, the sky quickly darkened.
Driven by impulse, Gu Zhixi followed He Jingyao to the neighboring apartment, but as the man opened the door and turned to smile at her, she began to regret it.
Being alone with this man late at night, and in pitch darkness at that... The thought made her want to turn and run.
"What, Miss Gu is scared?" The man seemed to see through her hesitation, his tone lightly provocative.
"Who’s scared?" Zhixi retorted defiantly, "Let’s go in!"
He chuckled softly, pushed the door open, and walked in.
It was indeed pitch black inside.
"You do have a flashlight at home, right?" Zhixi followed him inside, trying to adjust to the darkness.
The big door closed behind them with a bang, making her heart skip a beat.
"Yes." He Jingyao’s deep, soft voice sounded, and he suddenly grabbed her wrist, "Miss Gu, this way, the circuit is over here."
In the darkness, the place where her wrist was held felt distinct and scorching hot. She instinctively wanted to shake off his hand, but... he was only trying to lead her way.
If he had held her hand, Zhixi would have certainly shaken it off without hesitation, but a wrist...
She gritted her teeth and silently endured it.
He Jingyao quickly led her to a room, his voice light with a hint of amusement, "This is the place."
"Where’s the flashlight?" she asked, regaining her composure.
The man chuckled softly, seemed to press something, and suddenly the room was ablaze with light.
Zhixi stared at him blankly.
He raised his eyebrows in surprise, "What a coincidence, the power’s back on."
...Coincidence my ass!
Gu Zhixi felt utterly foolish. Why did she fall for it again? This man always managed to infuriate her to the point of losing her rationality, making her do things she deeply regretted.
"Since that’s the case, I’m leaving," she said resentfully, turning to walk toward the door.
An arm stretched out in front of her, blocking her way.
Zhixi looked up, meeting his somewhat amused gaze.
It seemed to say: Now that you are here, don’t think about leaving easily.
"Mr. He, what exactly do you want to do?" she asked in a lowered voice.
"Miss Gu rarely visits, I must entertain you properly," he looked at her earnestly, "Please, don’t get the wrong idea."
"...I haven’t misunderstood," she resisted saying, "but there’s no need for hospitality. The takeout I ordered is still at home, and it’ll be cold if I don’t eat it soon."
"Then, perhaps a cup of tea would suffice?" he spoke calmly, "As a host, it would be rude to let you leave just like this; it’s not my way of treating guests."
...What does your way of treating guests have to do with me?
"Are you planning to keep me here against my will?" she bit her lip, glaring at him.
The man didn’t speak, just gazed at her calmly.
His expression was serene, but his eyes were anything but, murky depths swirling with myriad emotions, causing one’s heartbeat to involuntarily quicken.
A sourness surged in Gu Zhixi’s heart.
"Mr. He, I am not your wife," she murmured faintly.
This was the third time she emphasized that fact.
Su Zixi had already died, that identity, she had utterly abandoned, along with the role of He Jingyao’s wife.
Please, do not sway her already eager heart again...
His gaze landing on her chest for the fourth time, his tone went cold, "Of course, I know you are not."
