Chapter 48: Black Goji

Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Black Goji

The puppy hasn’t completely lost its life force; it’s just very weak due to a birth accident and won’t drink milk.

Creating a spirit replenishing Xuan Talisman could pull the puppy back from the brink of death.

This puppy is so small it probably doesn’t know how to swallow, but Beisitian has a way. She twists an old piece of cotton into a ball, drips talismanic water onto it bit by bit, and drops it deep into the puppy’s throat.

Beisitian had seen her master rescue a dog at the inn like this before.

Her master was very eccentric, fitting every image people had of a mysterious Mystic Doctor. Many country gentry, wealthy people, or even the royal family wanted him to treat them, and even if they offered a fortune, he might not agree. It felt like he acted on whim.

But if he passed a sick colt or guard dog at an inn on the road, he would definitely intervene.

Beisitian was very puzzled and asked her master why he did this.

Her master said, "Healers should have benevolent hearts; even animals are living beings. Saving them can be considered accumulating virtue for oneself. But when it comes to humans, saving them doesn’t necessarily mean doing good or accumulating virtue; it could also mean aiding the wicked, so before saving someone, we must consider carefully and prevent harming our own karmic virtues!"

Beisitian always remembered her master’s words, so when she set about treating the puppy, she did it with devotion and care.

She dripped the cotton soaked in talismanic water into the puppy’s mouth bit by bit, and Beisitian felt its life force.

The Xuan Talismans she made now were limited in effect due to the influence of spirit, so she would need to administer them three more times tonight and tomorrow for the puppy to drink milk on its own.

Beisitian was becoming more urgent in her desire to restore her spirit. Her current spirit was not even one-fifth of what it was in her previous life. Even with that one-fifth, one talisman would allow the puppy to drink milk on its own without needing a second talisman.

Beisitian put the puppy back into the basket because she had to leave it for a day, so she had to think of some excuses.

She wasn’t planning to tell Mrs. Qin and Luo Anguo about Zhou Tian’s matter, as they only had two interactions and there was no need to worry them.

When she took the puppy back, Beisitian said she found it on the mountain, brought it back because it looked fun, and would release it tomorrow.

Luo Anping, having grown up in the village, was not much interested in cats or dogs. He glanced at it twice and went to the east room to practice calligraphy.

Beisitian usually slept light naps; she typically slept for an hour before getting up to practice calligraphy. Practicing calligraphy is a persistent task, and to master it requires constant dedication.

Luo Anguo was very gratified to see Beisitian so willing, and would turn to scold Luo Anping afterward.

Luo Anping hung his head and shot an aggrieved look at Beisitian, implying that he wouldn’t be forced to practice if she didn’t either.

Beisitian tapped his nose. This child had gained quite a bit of weight compared to two months ago and didn’t look so gaunt anymore.

"Ping’an, in one’s life, you might lose many things, but the knowledge and skills you learn will always be yours and will never be lost."

Luo Anping looked bewildered.

Knowing he didn’t understand, Beisitian clarified, "Haven’t you always envied those brothers and sisters who can go out to work?"

Luo Anping nodded.

"When you’ve mastered calligraphy, one day you’ll earn even more money than they do. You can buy lots of white bread buns, and lots and lots of pork!"

Luo Anping understood: practicing calligraphy could earn money to buy buns!

Luo Anguo glared at him irritably, seeing him just focused on eating!

Beisitian laughed. A child of only five, if you speak great truths to him, it sounds like heaven’s words. It’s better to cater to his interests, using this method to encourage his positive attitude.

As expected, afterward, Luo Anping practiced calligraphy more quietly and earnestly, reducing his antics significantly, all for the sake of white bread buns, even though Luo Anguo nodded approvingly.

Beisitian had a foundation in calligraphy herself, starting her brushwork with regular script. What she’s adept at is Flower-Pinning Small楷, which is a type of regular script, leading to rapid progress that made Luo Anguo suspect this wasn’t her first time writing with a brush.

Luo Anguo just doubted briefly, for Beisitian couldn’t even grasp the brush before, so she definitely hadn’t practiced before.

He secretly marveled, thinking if she were a boy, she’d surely have a promising future!

After practicing calligraphy all afternoon, around four o’clock, Beisitian and Luo Anping drove the sheep toward North Slope for grazing.

Because she was worried about the puppy, she brought it along and at North Slope turned the morning-made Xuan Talisman into water, soaked it with the cotton, and fed it to the puppy.

After drinking the second talismanic water, the puppy began to move its legs and feet, shuffling around in the basket as if searching for milk.

Beisitian knew it wasn’t hungry; it was just an instinctive behavior as both talismanic waters were energy replenishing.

Liu Chunyu walked leisurely over with a grass basket on her back, looking somewhat downcast, becoming even more dejected upon seeing Beisitian.

"Little Tian’er, my mom won’t let me go to town," Liu Chunyu grumbled with a pout.

Beisitian chuckled; this was an outcome she had anticipated.

Feeling down, Liu Chunyu’s mom said, "You two are like one foolish and one naive pair; going to town would just be waiting to be conned!"

People had always considered Beisitian’s previous extreme introversion as foolishness, while Liu Chunyu, seldom venturing out of the village, was so pure she was seen as naive!

Of course, Liu Chunyu couldn’t say this to Beisitian, so she stayed sulking on her own.

Sometimes she claimed to be out digging wild vegetables, though in reality, she just wanted to play. There aren’t enough wild vegetables to dig every day, but as a big girl at home, she couldn’t laze around every day either.

This is the general idea village folks have: if a girl grows lazy, how will she ever be a good wife? Her husband’s family would surely be irked to death.

Liu Chunyu didn’t go, and Beisitian found it a relief. For two days, she’d been simmering medicine and soup with Polygonum multiflorum; as the food ingredients at home were limited, the medicinal dishes were restricted to porridge and soup. She thought that if she could go to town next time, she could buy some chicks to raise, cook soup, and eat eggs.

Two days isn’t enough time to see results, but continually eating this way, the changes would become obvious soon enough.

Beisitian knew such things couldn’t be rushed. A good body requires laying a solid foundation step by step. Once her spirit recovers a bit more, she could tailor treatments with Polygonum multiflorum to improve the health of all four of them.

After drinking talismanic water for two days, the puppy was already crawling around, showing considerable improvement from its nearly lifeless state at the start.

That day, after herding the sheep, she let Luo Anping go back first, remaining in the valley waiting for Zhou Tian and the wolfhound to come for the puppy.

Soon, Zhou Tian arrived in her sight with the wolfhound.

What made Beisitian laugh was how the wolfhound held a little grass-woven basket in its mouth, with a bunch of grapes on top, seemingly as a thank-you gift for her!

Beisitian was just pondering how to thank this wolfhound, but when they approached and she took a closer look, her expression changed immediately.

That wasn’t grapes; it was actually Black Goji!
