Chapter 82: Chapter 82 Descision

Alina felt her chest tighten as he spoke. She wanted to look away but she couldn’t. His eyes flicked to her, just for a breath, enough to make her lips part and her breath catch in her throat.

"And that," he said, his final words cold but wrapped in that strange, velvet heat, "is why you do not choose lightly. Your teacher now is your first step into the life you will build. So decide."

He fell silent, the last word lingering in the air like a hush before a storm. The babies sat frozen, wide-eyed with tiny shoulders stiff. Boo clutched Lucian’s arm so tightly that Lucian had to shake him off.

Gabriel clapped his hands once, his bright smile breaking the heavy quiet like sunlight through clouds. "Well," he said, his warm voice like a hug, "you heard your principal. Now... what do you say?"

The babies all turned back to Alina, each little face holding its own spark of hope and mischief. Alina felt her throat tighten, her hands shaking where they gripped her skirt.

First step, she thought, the echo of that cold, low voice curling around her heart like a secret promise. My first step too.

For a moment, the room was so quiet Alina could hear the faint creak of the windows and her own heartbeat thumping in her ears. She held her breath, her eyes wide, her hands twisting together.

Then, with a soft swish of cool air, Boo floated forward. He hovered just in front of her, big ghost eyes blinking back shiny little tears. He stretched out his tiny arms and pressed his chilly body against her cheek in a wobbly, brave hug.

"Boo chooses Teacher Alina," he squeaked, his tiny voice trembling like a whispering breeze. "Boo wants Teacher forever. Boo doesn’t care if she pulls ear. Boo likes Teacher’s warm hand best."

Alina’s breath caught. She pressed her hand to her mouth, her eyes stinging with tears she didn’t want to let fall. Carefully, she cupped Boo’s soft little body, letting his chill seep through her fingers as if he were her own baby. "Oh, Boo," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Teacher chooses you too, sweetheart."

Boo squeaked and buried his misty face against her neck like a shy kitten.

Next came Drake, loud as ever. He shot up from his chair, nearly knocking it over. "Drake chooses Teacher Alina," he yelled, chest puffed out and amber eyes glittering. "If Teacher goes away, Drake will break the whole gate and bring her back." He slammed his tiny fist on his desk for good measure, earning a soft giggle from Kelpie.

Alina couldn’t help it. A tiny laugh slipped through her tears. She wiped her eyes quickly before they could fall. "Thank you, Drake. Teacher will stay for you." fre(e)webnove.l.c.om

Vlad Jr. stepped forward next. He adjusted his tiny tie like a prince about to make a royal decree. He bowed his head slightly. "Vlad Jr. approves Teacher Alina," he said in his calm, noble voice. "She respects us and she is good at teaching. She will be our eternal guardian." He added with pride, "And she lets me keep my coffin." fre(e)webnove.l.c.om

That made Boo squeak with a tiny giggle, and Alina let out a soft, breathless laugh, her heart blooming in her chest.

Sable was next. His small shadows curled tight around his desk. He didn’t move at first, just peeked up at her from under his hair, his mouth trembling. Then, in the softest voice, so faint Alina had to lean closer, he whispered, "Sable wants Teacher to stay."

Her heart cracked open at that. She mouthed thank you, her hand pressed to her chest, the warmth almost too big to hold.

Rocky shuffled up next, his feet so quiet they made no sound. He hugged his stone-marked fingers together, peeking up at her with that shy, gentle gaze. "Teacher not scared of Rocky," he mumbled, his voice shy but clear. "Teacher will roll Rocky home if he turn to stone." He sniffed once, cheeks pink. "Rocky wants Teacher stay forever."

Alina laughed through her tears, her shoulders trembling as she reached to pat his head. "Teacher will roll you anywhere, my little Rock," she promised.

Then, at last, Lucian looked up. He had been so still, his small hands folded neat on his desk, trying to look like a tiny grown-up, but his lashes were trembling. When he met her eyes, he nodded once, just a tiny dip of his chin but it was enough. "Lucian chooses Teacher Alina," he said in his small, clear voice. "Teacher is kind. Teacher stays."

Alina’s heartbeat stumbled so hard in her chest she had to press a hand to her blouse to keep it from flying out. Her eyes shimmered with tears she couldn’t hold back anymore. She bit her lip, a soft, shaky smile breaking through.

But her breath caught when she realized two babies were still silent.

She turned to Luna, her fierce little wolf who sat with her arms crossed, golden-brown eyes narrowed, lips pressed tight. The classroom held its breath.

Slowly, Luna’s foot tapped on the floor and then she looked up at Alina, her scowl trembling around the edges. "Teacher stays," she growled softly. "Teacher is good pack. Not soft. Good." Then she turned away quickly, cheeks pink as she stared out the window like she hadn’t just made Alina’s whole world.

And then only Felix was left.

He sat at the end of the row, arms folded like a tiny king, nose in the air. Alina’s throat tightened. She tried to catch his gaze but he looked away, pretending to flick invisible dust off his sleeve. The whole class turned to stare at him, Boo floating above his head like an angry ghost halo.

Finally, with the tiniest sigh, Felix glanced at her, just for a moment. His eyes softened. "...She can stay," he said with that cool little shrug.

Alina smiled through her tears. She pressed her hands to her cheeks, feeling her heartbeat thrum with relief, wonder, and a warmth so big she could hardly hold it inside her chest.

They chose me, she thought, her eyes shimmering as she looked at Dante, Gabriel, and Professor Hobb standing there. My babies chose me.

And behind that cold, unreadable glint in Dante’s eyes, his lips curved in the faintest, secret smile — so quick she almost missed it, but it was enough to make her heart skip all over again.
